Pregaming and Harm Reduction: Comparison of Specific Alcohol PBS Among Pregaming and Non-pregaming College Students.

Pregaming places college students at a higher risk for experiencing alcohol related negative consequences likely through less use of alcohol protective behavioral strategies. This study compared college students who did and did not endorse pregaming behaviors on their use of specific alcohol protective behavioral strategies. Participants were 331 traditional-age college students (Mage = 19.86, 64.8% White, 85.2% Female, 76.1% pregamed in past year) who completed measures assessing alcohol use, alcohol related negative consequences, pregaming, and alcohol protective behavioral strategies. Extending harm reduction through public health vending machines: Insights from implementation efforts in the United States.

The use of public health vending machines (PHVMs) is an emerging strategy implemented to mitigate drug-related harms via the dispensation of supplies like naloxone and sterile syringes from vending machines that have been documented to reduce transmission of blood borne viruses, support hygiene and basic personal health needs, and prevent overdose. To inform future applications of this technology and performed initially as part of a technical assistance request, we sought to examine PHVM adoption and implementation by conducting semi-structured interviews with 26 individuals from diverse roles

Case Report: Reintroduction of winged infusion sets to needle syringe programs - advancing equity in harm reduction.

BACKGROUND: In January 2023, following a 20-year ban, the New South Wales (NSW) Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) Guidelines permitted NSPs to provide winged infusion sets ('butterflies') and larger-volume syringes ('barrels') commonly used for injecting methadone liquid intravenously. APPROACH: The Kirketon Road Centre (KRC) integrated the distribution of 'butterflies and barrels' (referred to as 'butterfly packs') into its service delivery in April 2023 and developed resources in collaboration with the Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) and the NSW Users and AIDS Associatio

Media representation of methamphetamine-related deaths: Exploring links to public stigma and support for harm reduction.

BACKGROUND: Drug-related deaths are a significant and growing public health concern. In Australia, meth/amphetamine is the most common stimulant drug involved in unintentional drug-related deaths. People who use meth/amphetamine often experience stigma and are negatively portrayed in the media. Considering the influence of media on public attitudes, which in turn influences policy, this study aimed to examine the relationships between media representations of drug-related deaths and stigma towards the people who use drugs along with attitudes towards harm reduction policy. METHODS: Nationally

'Tranq': perceptions of xylazine and harm reduction practices among people receiving treatment for substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Xylazine, commonly known as 'Tranq,' is a veterinary tranquilizer that is increasingly found in the recreational opioid supply, complicating the user experience. Xylazine-adulterated fentanyl is associated with a withdrawal syndrome that may not respond to usual treatment, and the opioid overdose reversal agent naloxone does not reverse the effect of xylazine.1 While it remains unclear whether xylazine directly increases overdose deaths, its presence in the drug supply likely elevates overall harm and morbidity. Moreover, due to unintended contact, xylazine poses an often unaccount

Stigma by association among alcohol and other drug and harm reduction workers: Implications for workplace outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: The negative attitudes people hold towards those who use alcohol or other drugs (AOD) can also affect the people who work with this community, leading to lowered productivity and wellbeing. The impact of this stigma by association in the AOD and harm reduction sector is particularly significant because workers may have lived experience of AOD use and identify strongly with their client group. This study aimed to examine how stigma by association among health workers in the AOD/harm reduction sector relates to workplace outcomes. A secondary aim was to explore how lived experience

Harm reduction stories: leveraging graphic medicine to engage veterans in substance use services within the VA.

BACKGROUND: Harm reduction strategies can decrease morbidity and mortality associated with substance use. Various barriers limit conversation around substance use between clinicians and patients. Graphic medicine techniques can inform and encourage patient-centered conversations about substance use. We describe the co-development of a harm reduction-focused graphic medicine comic that depicts the infectious risks associated with injection drug use and patient-centered approaches to providing education about potential risk mitigation strategies. METHODS: We formed a co-design group of veterans

Harm Reduction Strategies for Severe Alcohol Use Disorder in the Context of Homelessness: A Rapid Review.

Severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the context of housing instability remains one of the most complex health and social issues. Homelessness is related to increased vulnerability to stigma, marginalization and harmful ways of alcohol consumption, including non-beverage alcohol use (NBA). As a result, severe intoxication, alcohol poisoning, injury and death are common occurrences. Although harm minimization strategies have been readily proposed and examined in the context of drug use, applying the same principles to severe AUD remains controversial within the research and treatment community.

Effects of media representations of drug related deaths on public stigma and support for harm reduction.

BACKGROUND: Drug related deaths (DRD) are at historically high levels in the United Kingdom (UK), but some approaches that have the potential to reduce risk of mortality remain controversial. Public support makes an important contribution to drug policy development but there are high levels of public stigma towards people who use drugs (PWUD), and this is partly shaped by media representations. We investigated whether depiction of the characteristics of decedents represented in news articles about DRD was associated with differences in stigmatising attitudes and support for harm reduction poli

Methamphetamine use in the United States: epidemiological update and implications for prevention, treatment, and harm reduction.

Recent attention has focused on the growing role of psychostimulants, such as methamphetamine in overdose deaths. Methamphetamine is an addictive and potent stimulant, and its use is associated with a range of physical and mental health harms, overdose, and mortality. Adding to the complexity of this resurgent methamphetamine threat is the reality that the increases in methamphetamine availability and harms are occurring in the midst of and intertwined with the ongoing opioid overdose crisis. Opioid involvement in psychostimulant-involved overdose deaths increased from 34.5% of overdose deaths

Monitoring quality and coverage of harm reduction services for people who use drugs: a consensus study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite advances in our knowledge of effective services for people who use drugs over the last decades globally, coverage remains poor in most countries, while quality is often unknown. This paper aims to discuss the historical development of successful epidemiological indicators and to present a framework for extending them with additional indicators of coverage and quality of harm reduction services, for monitoring and evaluation at international, national or subnational levels. The ultimate aim is to improve these services in order to reduce health and social problems a

Two steps forward, one step back: current harm reduction policy and politics in the United States.

Harm reduction policies and attitudes in the United States have advanced substantially in recent years but still lag behind more advanced jurisdictions in Europe and elsewhere. The Obama administration, particularly in its last years, embraced some harm reduction policies that had been rejected by previous administrations but shied away from more cutting edge interventions like supervised consumption sites and heroin-assisted treatment. The Trump administration will undermine some of the progress made to date but significant state and local control over drug policies in the US, as well as grow

Harm reduction with pharmacotherapy for homeless people with alcohol dependence: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Interventions requiring abstinence from alcohol are neither preferred by nor shown to be highly effective with many homeless individuals with alcohol dependence. It is therefore important to develop lower-threshold, patient-centered interventions for this multimorbid and high-utilizing population. Harm-reduction counseling requires neither abstinence nor use reduction and pairs a compassionate style with patient-driven goal-setting. Extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX), a monthly injectable formulation of an opioid receptor antagonist, reduces craving and may support achievement of

Outcome assessment of a triangular clinic as a harm reduction intervention in Rajaee-Shahr Prison, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among incarcerated injection drug users (IDU) is a health epidemic in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Triangular clinics (TCs) were established in prisons as a harm reduction measure to decrease the risk of HIV transmission and other blood-borne infections. The objective of this study was to assess the immediate outcomes of one TC among male IDUs in Iran's Rajaee-Shahr prison. METHODS: This study was conducted in two stages between 2003 and 2005. In the preparatory stage, focus group data was collected to update the prison's TC

Addiction, agency, and the politics of self-control: doing harm reduction in a heroin users' group.

Our 2007-2009 ethnography describes and analyses the practice of harm reduction in a heroin users' group in the midwestern United States. While dominant addiction interventions conceptualize the addict as powerless - either through moral or physical weakness - this group contested such "commonsense," treating illicit drug use as one of many ways that modern individuals attempt to "fill the void." Insisting on the destigmatization of addiction and the normalization of illicit drug use, the group helped its members work on incremental steps toward self-management. Although "Connection Points" ha
