Head cooling is desirable but not essential for preventing heat strain in pilots.

Liquid-cooled garments (LCGs) are being considered for reducing heat strain in pilots. While head cooling has been shown to be thermally efficient and subjectively desirable, it is technically difficult to achieve. This laboratory study was carried out to see if head cooling in addition to torso cooling is a necessity. Six male subjects wore a cooling vest and cap under summer flight clothing on three occasions in a climatic chamber set at Tdb = 42 degrees C, Twb = 32 degrees C (RH = 50%), Tg = 52 degrees C at head position, WBGT = 35 degrees C. Cooling conditions were: control (CTRL), no flui

Quantitative analysis of the protective performance of bicycle helmet with multi-direction impact protection system in oblique impact tests.

PURPOSE: The current study aimed to assess the protective performance of helmets equipped with multi-directional impact protection system (MIPS) under various oblique impact loads. METHODS: Initially, a finite element model of a bicycle helmet with MIPS was developed based on the scanned geometric parameters of an actual bicycle helmet. Subsequently, the validity of model was confirmed using the KASK WG11 oblique impact test method. Three different impact angles (30°, 45°, and 60°) and 2 varying impact speeds (5 m/s and 8 m/s) were employed in oblique tests to evaluate protective performance

A technique for in situ intracranial strain measurement within a helmeted deformable headform.

Despite the broad use of helmets, incidence of concussion remains high. Current methods for helmet evaluation focus on the measurement of head kinematics as the primary tool for quantifying risk of brain injury. Though the primary cause of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) is thought to be intracranial strain, helmet testing methodologies are not able to directly resolve these parameters. Computational injury models and impact severity measures are currently used to approximate intracranial strains from head kinematics and predict injury outcomes. Advancing new methodologies that enable exper

Fiber optic sensor embedded smart helmet for real-time impact sensing and analysis through machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) strongly associates with chronic neurodegenerative impairments such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild cognitive impairment. Early detection of concussive events would significantly enhance the understanding of head injuries and provide better guidance for urgent diagnoses and the best clinical practices for achieving full recovery. NEW METHOD: A smart helmet was developed with a single embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor for real-time sensing of blunt-force impact events to helmets. The transient signals provide both magnitu

Occupational vs. non-occupational equestrians: Differences in demographics and injury patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Nineteen million people participate in horseback riding activities in the US, and the horse industry employs more than 460,000 full-time workers. Emergency department data suggest young female amateurs and male professionals are most at risk of death from horse-related injuries. However, there has been no investigation into factors that may increase severe injury and mortality risk in these populations. This study investigates demographics and injury pattern differences between occupational and non-occupational horse-related injuries in the US. METHODS: The 2017 American College

Associated Injuries Are Common Among Patients With Bicycle-Related Craniofacial Fractures.

PURPOSE: Ample evidence exists on the relationship between bicycle injuries and craniofacial fractures. However, as the mechanism behind these injuries is often multifactorial, the presence of associated injuries (AIs) in this study population requires further examination. We hypothesized that patients with craniofacial fracture injured in bicycle accidents are at high risk of sustaining severe AIs, especially those of the head and neck region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The investigators performed a retrospective study on all patients with bicycle-related craniofacial fracture admitted to a terti

Unsafe Bicycling Behavior in Changsha, China: A Video-Based Observational Study.

The recent emergence of shared bikes has inspired renewed use of bicycles in urban China. However, incidence rates of unsafe cycling behaviors have not been reported using objective methods. We designed a video-based observational study in Changsha, China to estimate the incidence of five unsafe bicycling behaviors among both shared and personal bike riders and examine incidence differences across types of riders and cycling areas. A total of 112 h of video recorded 13,407 cyclists riding shared bikes and 2061 riding personal bikes. The incidences of not wearing a helmet, violating traffic lig

Equestrian Helmet Standards: Do They Represent Real-World Accident Conditions?

The use of helmets in equestrian sports has reduced the occurrence of traumatic brain injuries although, despite improvements to helmets, concussion remains a common injury. Currently, equestrian helmets are designed to pass certification standards involving a linear drop test to a rigid surface, while most concussions in equestrian sports result from oblique impacts to a compliant surface. The purpose of this study was to: (1) Compare the head kinematics and brain tissue response of the current equestrian helmet standard (EN1) and proposed standard EN13087-11 (EN2) to those associated with re

The impact response of traditional and BMX-style bicycle helmets at different impact severities.

Bicycle helmets reduce the frequency and severity of severe to fatal head and brain injuries in bicycle crashes. Our goal here was to measure the impact attenuation performance of common bicycle helmets over a range of impact speeds. We performed 127 drop tests using 13 different bicycle helmet models (6 traditional style helmets and 7 BMX-style helmets) at impact speeds ranging from 1 to 10m/s onto a flat anvil. Helmets were struck on their left front and/or right front areas, a common impact location that was at or just below the test line of most bicycle helmet standards. All but one of the

Helmet use among cyclists in New York City.

Lack of helmet use while bicycling can have deleterious effects on health. Despite evidence that helmets can greatly reduce the risk of head injury, the prevalence of helmet use among riders, including those in urban bicycle-share programs, has been shown to be very low. Building upon the authors' previous work, this study's aim was to assess prevalence of helmet use among cyclists riding on widely used New York City (NYC) bike lanes. Across a 2-month period, cyclists were filmed in five NYC locations with bike lanes. Filming took place at two separate time periods (recreation and commute) at
