Health care leaders face intensifying pressures, from rising costs to workforce challenges and shifting patient expectations. The new era of health care consumerism offers a path forward, reimagining how health systems engage people as consumers across their full health journeys. This article outlines how leaders can evolve from traditional transactional models of patient engagement toward an always-on, data-driven, trust-based model that strengthens patient outcomes, improves efficiency, and builds lasting trust and loyalty with consumers. By embracing the principles of this new health care c

Microplastics (MPs) have rapidly become one of the most pervasive pollutants in the modern world. Far from being confined to oceans or waste sites, these tiny particles now circulate through the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. As everyday plastic items break down over time, they form microscopic fragments that can travel long distances and enter the human body through inhalation or ingestion. Once inside the body, these particles may accumulate in organs and interact with biological systems in ways that scientists are only beginning to understand. This review synthesiz

Within the context of the U.S. occupation of Hawai'i, State-sponsored and Hawaiian-led health initiatives cannot be reduced to a binary of "colonial/unhealthy" versus "Hawaiian/healthy." Instead, they operate within overlapping and often conflicting paradigms structured by what we term the Ideology of Occupation. This ideology obscures a central reality: kaumaha-the deep, collective malaise affecting the Hawaiian psyche ( Rezentes, 1996)-is the result of a disruption in the kū'auhau (genealogy) of Hawaiian public health, in which sovereign systems of care were replaced by a bureaucratic appara

AIM: The aim of this review is to summarize current evidence on the relationship between mental health, stress, sleep, and cancer prevention, and to propose a clinically applicable framework for integrating these topics into preventive practice without attributing a direct causal role in cancer development.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This narrative review is based on epidemiological, clinical, and meta-analytic studies examining mental health, sleep disturbances, and their associations with cancer risk, health-related behavior, and prevention. Relevant psycho-oncological and preventive care recomm

Human health has improved dramatically, but biodiversity is in crisis, with over 1 million species at risk of extinction. Human activities, such as deforestation and resource overuse, have accelerated environmental changes, known as Anthropocene Acceleration. The Planetary Boundaries framework identifies nine ecological limits, including climate change and biodiversity loss. By 2023, six of these boundaries had been exceeded, threatening human survival. Climate change, driven by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is causing extreme weather, rising sea levels, and ecosystem disruptions. The IPCC w

INTRODUCTION: Research shows low health confidence predicts poor involvement in self-care and is associated with increased use of costly healthcare services. To improve overall health and reduce health inequities, the relevance and urgency of identifying the relationship between social determinants of health and health confidence are great.
OBJECTIVE: This study explored relationships between social determinants of health and health confidence in adults at an urgent care center in southern California.
METHODS: The descriptive cross-sectional study collected data via survey from 240 English-

Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are traditionally defined as systematically developed recommendations designed to optimize patient care, primarily within clinical settings under physician supervision. However, the scope of health-related decision-making has expanded considerably, now encompassing interventions implemented by various health professionals and even the general public. This evolving landscape necessitates a broader and more nuanced classification of health-related guidelines. In this opinion paper, we propose a revised framework that categorizes guidelines into three distinct

As part of its mandate as the normative authority over Global Health, the World Health Organization is responsible for research to improves health worldwide. Since the 1970s, the organization has sought to find ways to promote scientific collaboration and coordination among actors who fund and do research. It has been hampered in this task by its own institutional weaknesses, fragmentation of the huge medical research field and, since the 1990s, the appearance of major funders like the World Bank and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with far greater resources and different understandings of

Rheumatoid arthritis represents a significant and serious global public health burden, and its prevalence is continuously increasing. It is a chronic inflammatory joint disease based on autoimmune and autoinflammatory mechanisms, characterized by variable clinical manifestations and frequent systemic involvement. Due to its progression, comorbidities, and negative impact on quality of life, it poses a significant medical and societal challenge. Therapeutic advances in recent years – including conventional, biological, and targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs – have signific

Adolescence is a time of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. This period is a very sensitive developmental window; environmental exposures, the development of health behaviours (eg, smoking and physical activity), and illness during adolescence can have implications for lifelong health. In the UK and other high-income countries, the experience of adolescence has changed profoundly over the past 20 years. Smoking, drug use, and alcohol consumption have all been in long-term decline. At the same time, obesity and mental ill health have increased and are now common among adole

This article evaluates and elucidates the intersections across social and economic determinants of health and social structures that maintain current inequities and structural violence with a focus on the impact on imMigrants (immigrants and migrants), refugees, and those who remain invisible (e.g., people without immigration status who reside in the United States) from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. Psychology has a history of treating individuals and families without adequately considering how trauma is cyclically and generationally maintained by structural violence, ine

Although preventable by vaccines, approximately 60'000 humans die due to canine transmitted rabies annually, mostly in Africa and Asia. The aim of this paper is to advocate for including animal health aspects into considerations of human health and human rights, and for equitable access to rabies vaccination for both animals and humans. An infringement of human - in particular of children's - right to health will be illustrated with the case of rabies and poor dog management in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Previously incarcerated individuals report high rates of chronic disease and reduced health care access. We characterized the impact of recent incarceration in jail or prison on chronic disease burden and health care utilization.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Incarceration data over 10 years were matched to health system data and patients were classified by recent incarceration status. Each cohort was stratified by gender and neighborhood socioeconomic status for utilization analysis. Main outcomes were chronic disease incidence and health care utilization. Incarceration had a significant

BACKGROUND: Oral health care may improve the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of HIV/AIDS patients. We aimed to evaluate oral health and HRQoL of HIV/AIDS patients using antiretroviral therapy.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 120 HIV-infected patients, aged ≥18 years, from February, 2016 to September, 2017. The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to evaluate the HRQoL. We assessed dental caries status using the Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index. Information about demographic, socioeconomic status, depression, and other comorbidities were collected. A
