County-Level COVID-19 Policy Comprehensiveness and Adult Behavioral Health during 2021 : County-Level COVID-19 Policy and Adult Behavioral Health.

Epidemiologic research has found worsening behavioral health in the USA since 2020. Local policies may have contributed to these patterns and associated disparities. However, scant research has systematically documented county-level COVID-19-era policymaking or empirically investigated its health impacts. To investigate this question, we linked the US COVID-19 County Policy Database-a novel database with weekly data from 2020 to 2021 on 26 policies for 309 primarily urban counties-to data on adult behavioral health from the cross-sectional 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 25,60

Behavioral health risks in perinatally HIV-exposed youth: co-occurrence of sexual and drug use behavior, mental health problems, and nonadherence to antiretroviral treatment.

In a sample of perinatally HIV-infected (PHIV+) and perinatally HIV-exposed, uninfected (PHEU) adolescents, we examined the co-occurrence of behavioral health risks including mental health problems, onset of sexual and drug use behaviors, and (in PHIV+ youth) nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Participants, recruited from 2007 to 2010, included 349 youth, ages 10-16 years, enrolled in a cohort study examining the impact of HIV infection and ART. Measures of the above behavioral health risks were administered to participants and primary caregivers. Nearly half the participants met st

Unhealthy weight control behaviors and health risk behaviors in American youth: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy weight control behaviors (UWCBs) involve weight control strategies to reduce or maintain weight, such as fasting, taking diet pills, and vomiting or taking laxatives. UWCBs in teenagers can escalate into severe health issues such as eating disorders. Understanding the trends of UWCBs and their association with risk behaviors in teenagers is crucial, as early intervention and prevention strategies are pivotal. METHODS: This study utilized eight waves of the youth risk behavior surveillance system (YRBSS) data from 1999 to 2013. Our primary outcome was UWCBs engagement. We

Multi-component behavioral intervention to promote health protective behaviors in childhood cancer survivors: the protect study.

BACKGROUND: Improved cure rates for childhood cancer have produced a growing population of survivors at risk for late toxicities of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Healthy behaviors can modify these risks. We initiated a controlled prospective trial to determine if a multi-component behavioral intervention could induce change in childhood cancer survivors' health knowledge, health perceptions, and practice of health-protective behaviors. PROCEDURE: Adolescent cancer survivors attending a long-term follow-up clinic were randomized to receive standard follow-up care or standard care plus th

High school students' pandemic adversity and behavioral health: Evidence from the adolescent behaviors and experiences survey.

The COVID-19 pandemic created unique challenges for adolescents, impacting their well-being. The present study sought to answer the questions: (a) What are the latent classes of youth according to their self-reported adverse experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic? (b) To what extent do behavioral health outcomes differ across these latent classes? And (c) to what extent do youth sociodemographic characteristics predict latent class membership? This study used data from a nationally representative sample of United States high school students who completed the Adolescent Behaviors and Experien

Sports participation and physical health outcomes: the mediating roles of educational attainment and health-related behaviors.

Participation in sports has been associated with better physical health, but the educational and behavioral pathways through which this association operates have not been sufficiently investigated in public health research. Therefore, this study examined an integrated public health model from sports participation to physical health outcomes and the mediating effects of educational attainment and health-related behaviors. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was used to investigate adults aged 18 years and older who had participated in organized or informal sporting activities. Data col

Applying the Health Belief Model to Urban Medication Disposal Behaviors: Insights for Public Health Interventions.

Improper disposal of household pharmaceutical waste (HPW) contributes to environmental contamination and public health risks, yet safe disposal practices remain inconsistent in many communities. This study examined the behavioral intentions of urban Malaysian residents toward safe HPW disposal using the Health Belief Model (HBM). A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 450 stratified pharmacy customers across the Klang Valley. Respondents completed a self-administered digital questionnaire assessing HBM constructs on a 6-point Likert scale. Data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Str

Integrating environmental and behavioral tracking via digital health systems for personalized skin health management.

Chronic dermatological conditions impose a significant burden on global health and quality of life. The etiology of these disorders is multifaceted, driven by complex interactions between endogenous factors and the "skin exposome", which comprises a person's environmental exposure and lifestyle. While digital health systems (DHSs) have transformed the management of numerous chronic diseases, a unified framework that captures the dynamic interplay of environment, behavior, and skin physiology has not been fully established to date. Therefore, this review proposes and evaluates a holistic "envir

Health Behaviors and Health Status among Middle-Aged and Older Adults with Chronic Diseases in Taiwan.

Changes in lifestyle behaviors may effectively maintain or improve the health status of individuals with chronic diseases. However, such health behaviors adopted by individuals are unlikely to demonstrate similar patterns. This study analyzed the relationship between the heterogeneous latent classes of health behavior and health statuses among middle-aged and older adults with hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia in Taiwan. After selecting 2103 individuals from the 2005 and 2009 Taiwan National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), we first identified heterogeneous groups of health behaviors th
