Assessing the effectiveness of New York's 911 Good Samaritan Law-Evidence from a natural experiment.

BACKGROUND: Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Nationally, opioids are the primary drugs associated with accidental overdoses. In response to increasing overdose deaths, 40 states and the District of Columbia have enacted Good Samaritan Laws (GSLs). Generally, these policies attempt to encourage witnesses or those experiencing an overdose to call 911 by providing limited immunity from arrest, charge and/or prosecution of possession of narcotics. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effectiveness of New York State's 911 GSL. METHODS: We expl

Within the Bounds: The Role of Relocation on Intimate Partner Violence Help-Seeking for Immigrant and Native Women With Histories of Homelessness.

Our study examines the effects of abused women's relocation and recentness to an area on informal and formal help-seeking, and how access to personal and social resources affect these relationships. Secondary data analysis was conducted using a sample of 572 women with histories of abuse and homelessness who were interviewed at shelters in the state of Florida. Findings from nested linear regressions demonstrate that relocation affects formal help-seeking while recentness to an area affects informal help-seeking. Access to personal resources also predicts women's use of both informal and forma

Parental Authoritativeness, Social Support and Help-seeking for Mental Health Problems in Adolescents.

Adolescents experience high rates of mental health problems but are reluctant to seek professional help. Parents play an integral role in the help seeking process for their adolescent children. Parental authoritativeness and support have been identified as contributing to better mental health outcomes and a reduction in help seeking barriers in their children. The current study examined the influence of parental authoritativeness and support on help seeking intentions and behaviors in 1582 students (49% female) in 17 schools (mean age = 17.7, range 16-18). All data was available for 1032 parti

AI feedback-seeking and learning engagement in art education: psychological antecedents and reflective mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Generative artificial intelligence provides students with a feedback source that differs from traditional teacher and peer interaction, yet limited research has explained why students actively seek feedback from AI or how such feedback-seeking is associated with subsequent learning engagement. Drawing on transactional stress and coping theory and social cognitive theory, this study examined the psychological antecedents and reflective mechanisms of AI feedback-seeking in art education. METHODS: Two complementary studies were conducted. Study 1 utilized survey data from 315 highe

How Caregivers Make Meaning of Child Mental Health Problems: Toward Understanding Caregiver Strain and Help Seeking.

Family caregivers' conceptualizations of their child's emotional and behavioral problems (EBP) influence help-seeking for the child and caregiver strain. We analyzed 21 interviews with caregivers to explore their conceptualizations about the cause of their child's EBP, their experiences of strain, and their reported help-seeking behaviors. Caregivers had divergent conceptualizations of their child's EBP: 12 caregivers viewed the EBP as caused by a disorder and described the onset of symptoms as the central stressful event, whereas 9 caregivers described their child's problems as a response to

School-Based Mental Health Education: Program Effectiveness and Trends in Help-Seeking.

One of the strategies to address the persistent youth mental health crisis is school-based educational programming. This paper reports on two distinct studies regarding Coming Up for AIR, a school-based mental health education program: (1) program effectiveness, measured as gains in student mental health literacy; and (2) trends in help-seeking behavior before, during, and after the pandemic. A survey on program content was administered to assess program effectiveness. Data collected between 2020 and 2023 from four schools yielded 473 responses. A comparison of pre- and post-scores demonstrate

Subtyping based on readiness and confidence: the identification of help-seeking profiles for gamblers accessing web-based counselling.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problem gamblers are not a homogeneous group and recent data suggest that subtyping can improve treatment outcomes. This study administered three readiness rulers and aimed to identify subtypes of gamblers accessing a national web-based counselling service based on these rulers. METHODS: Participants were 1204 gamblers (99.4% problem gamblers) who accessed a single session of web-based counselling in Australia. Measures included three readiness rulers (importance, readiness and confidence to resist an urge to gamble), demographics and the Problem Gambling Severity Index (

Anonymous Digital Therapy May Increase Help-Seeking Among Stigmatized Individuals.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) exist in a "Dark Field" (German: Dunkelfeld), where a vast majority of incidents occur without ever becoming known to authorities. Therapy is a potential strategy in reducing CSA offence risk and CSAM consumption. However, public stigma towards individuals with a sexual interest in children (ISIC) is extensive and hostile to a level that discourages engagement of ISIC in therapy. Implementation of measures to reduce the barriers to therapy for ISIC is critical to improve the mental well-being of ISIC, improve coping strategies, an
