Phytochemical Composition, Antioxidant, Antimicrobial, Antibiofilm, and Antiquorum Sensing Potential of Methanol Extract and Essential Oil from Acanthus polystachyus Delile (Acanthaceae).

The evolution of microbes in response to conventional antimicrobials leads to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and multidrug resistance (MDR), and it is a global threat to public health. Natural products are possible solutions to this massive challenge. In this study, the potential of Acanthus polystachyus extracts was investigated for phytochemical composition and biological properties as antimicrobials. Gas chromatography-mass spectra (GC-MS) analysis of methanol extract (ME) and essential oil (EO) detected 79 and 20 compounds, respectively. The major compounds identified in ME and their abund

Characterization of Key Compounds of Organic Acids and Aroma Volatiles in Fruits of Different Actinidia argute Resources Based on High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Headspace Gas Chromatography-Ion Mobility Spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS).

Actinidia arguta, known for its distinctive flavor and high nutritional value, has seen an increase in cultivation and variety identification. However, the characterization of its volatile aroma compounds remains limited. This study aimed to understand the flavor quality and key volatile aroma compounds of different A. arguta fruits. We examined 35 A. arguta resource fruits for soluble sugars, titratable acids, and sugar-acid ratios. Their organic acids and volatile aroma compounds were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility s

Physiological, Genetic, and Transcriptomic Analysis of Alcohol-Induced Delay of Escherichia coli Death.

When Escherichia coli K-12 is inoculated into rich medium in batch culture, cells experience five phases. While the lag and logarithmic phases are mechanistically fairly well defined, the stationary phase, death phase, and long-term stationary phase are less well understood. Here, we characterize a mechanism of delaying death, a phenomenon we call the "alcohol effect," where the addition of small amounts of certain alcohols prolongs stationary phase for at least 10 days longer than in untreated conditions. We show that the stationary phase is extended when ethanol is added above a minimum thre

Responses of Dendroctonus brevicomis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in behavioral assays: implications to development of a semiochemical-based tool for tree protection.

Currently, techniques for managing western pine beetle, Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), infestations are limited to tree removals (thinning) that reduce stand density and presumably host susceptibility, and/or the use of insecticides to protect individual trees. There continues to be significant interest in developing an effective semiochemical-based tool for protecting trees from D. brevicomis attack, largely as an alternative to conventional insecticides. The responses of D. brevicomis to tree volatiles and verbenone were documented in eight experimen

Early transcriptome analyses of Z-3-Hexenol-treated zea mays revealed distinct transcriptional networks and anti-herbivore defense potential of green leaf volatiles.

Green leaf volatiles (GLV), which are rapidly emitted by plants in response to insect herbivore damage, are now established as volatile defense signals. Receiving plants utilize these molecules to prime their defenses and respond faster and stronger when actually attacked. To further characterize the biological activity of these compounds we performed a microarray analysis of global gene expression. The focus of this project was to identify early transcriptional events elicited by Z-3-hexenol (Z-3-HOL) as our model GLV in maize (Zea mays) seedlings. The microarray results confirmed previous st

Volatile organic compound profiles in oat are shaped by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, barley yellow dwarf virus and soil herbicide residues.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted by plants and vary in quantity and composition depending on biotic and abiotic environmental conditions. Plant-emitted VOCs are altered by attacking herbivores and pathogens, and have been increasingly found to be fine-tuned by microbial associates and environmental pollutants. Here, we studied whether arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) treatment, barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) infection, and soil pollution with glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) residues affect the emission of volatile organic compounds by oat (Avena sativa) plants. Oat plants wer

Effect of Flaxseed Supplementation in Diet of Dairy Cow on the Volatile Organic Compounds of Raw Milk by HS-GC-IMS.

Flaxseed supplementation in diet of dairy cow can effectively enhance the production of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) in raw milk, which further give rise to the changes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, we used headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) to investigate the VOCs in milk from cows fed three different diets (CK: supplemented with 0 g/d flaxseed; WF: 1,500 g/d whole flaxseed and GF: 1,500 g/d ground flaxseed). A total of 40 VOCs including three acids, six esters, 11 aldehydes, seven alcohols, 13 ketones were identified in all

Effects of ethanol, activated carbon, and activated kaolin on perilla seed oil: Volatile organic compounds, physicochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition.

Perilla seed oil (PSO) has a special aromatic odor, which is unpleasant to the personal preferences of some consumers. To this end, this article evaluated the differences in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), physicochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition of PSO treated with ethanol (PSO-EA), activated carbon (PSO-AC), and activated kaolin (PSO-AK). The results showed that in the PSO, PSO-EA, PSO-AC, and PSO-AK samples, the content of linolenic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid hardly changed. Among the physicochemical characteristics of the four samples, the color difference be

Biocompatible fluorescence-enhanced ZrO₂-CdTe quantum dot nanocomposite for in vitro cell imaging.

With advances of quantum dots (QDs) in bioimaging applications, various materials have been used to coat QDs to reduce their nanotoxicity; however, the coating could introduce new toxic sources and quench the fluorescence in bioimaging applications. In this work, ZrO₂, an excellent ceramic material with low extinction coefficient and good biocompatibility, is utilized to coat CdTe QDs for the first time. Experimental results show that ZrO₂-QD nanocomposites with the size of ~30 nm possess enhanced fluorescence emission, lower nanotoxicity and gradually increased fluorescence under 350 nm light

cis-3-Hexenol and trans-2-hexenal mixture prevents development of PTSD-like phenotype in rats.

Several green leaf volatiles have anxiolytic/antidepressant properties and attenuate adrenocortical stress response in rodents. However, it remains unknown whether a mixture of cis-3-hexenol and trans-2-hexenal so-called 'green odor (GO)' affects fear-associated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like behavior. In the present study, fear memory of the initial conditioning stimulus was stably maintained by weekly presentation of conditioned tone. Examination of open field behavior, acoustic startle response, prepulse inhibition, and immobility in the forced swim test for 2 weeks after initia

Uncovering the Differences in Flavour Volatiles from Hybrid and Conventional Foxtail Millet Varieties Based on Gas Chromatography-Ion Migration Spectrometry and Chemometrics.

The flavour of foxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.) is an important indicator for evaluating the quality of the millet. The volatile components in steamed millet porridge samples were analysed using electronic nose (E-Nose) and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) techniques, and characteristic volatile fingerprints were constructed to clarify the differences in the main flavour substances in different foxtail millet varieties (two hybrids and two conventional foxtail millets). After sensory evaluation by judges, Jingu 21 (JG) scored significantly higher than the ot

Correlation between hydrophobicity of short-chain aliphatic alcohols and their ability to alter plasma membrane integrity.

The quantitative relationship between chemical structure and biological activity has received considerable attention in the fields of pharmacology and drug development. More recently, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) have been used for predicting chemical toxicity. It has been proposed that alcohols may elicit their toxic effects through hydrophobic interactions with the cellular membrane. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of hydrophobicity in the loss of membrane integrity following acute exposure to short-chain aliphatic alcohols in rat liver epithelia

Volatile generation in bell peppers during frozen storage and thawing using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS).

UNLABELLED: To determine volatile formation during storage and thawing, whole, pureed, blanched, and raw green and red bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) were frozen quickly or slowly then stored at -18 °C for up to 7 mo, with and without SnCl(2) addition during thawing. Headspace analysis was performed by a Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometer (SIFT-MS). After blanching, (Z)-3-hexenal had a large significant decrease in concentration since it is a heat labile compound while most other volatiles did not change in concentration. The freezing process increased volatile levels in the puree only.

Microphysiological system modeling of ochratoxin A-associated nephrotoxicity.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is one of the most abundant mycotoxin contaminants in food stuffs and possesses carcinogenic, nephrotoxic, teratogenic, and immunotoxic properties. Specifically, a major concern is severe nephrotoxicity, which is characterized by degeneration of epithelial cells of the proximal tubules and interstitial fibrosis. However, the mechanism of OTA toxicity, as well as the genetic risk factors contributing to its toxicity in humans has been elusive due to the lack of adequate models that fully recapitulate human kidney function in vitro. The present study attempts to evaluate dose-

Network pharmacology-based therapeutic intervention of Mentha arvensis targeting cancer and doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Doxorubicin (Dox) is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent effective against hematological malignancies and solid tumors, including leukemia, breast and bladder cancers, lymphomas, and Kaposi's sarcoma. Despite its clinical efficacy, the therapeutic application of Dox is severely limited by dose-dependent cardiotoxicity, manifesting as both acute and chronic Doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC). Dexrazoxane (Dexa) remains the only FDA-approved cardioprotective agent available; however, it compromises the anti-cancer activity of Dox and poses risks such as secondary malignancies,
