Novel insight of dynamic characteristics of typical terrestrial plant litter as potential organic source to waterbodies.

Plant litter emerges as a notable organic source in moderately/lightly polluted waterbodies, which has been the main pollution type in the world. However, previous researches overlooked the long-term organic dynamic characteristics and mechanistic release-degradation process of plant litter. This study performed an immersion experiment (224d) of fresh (wet/dry) and rotten leaf litter, investigating organic evolution via multiscale approaches: dissolved organic carbon (DOC), fluorescence dissolved organic matter (FDOM), and DOM molecular analysis. Results revealed that dry litter discharged the

Biodegradation of carbon tetrachloride from groundwater in an upflow solid-phase biofilm system.

In the present study, an upflow solid-phase denitrification biofilm reactor (US-DBR) was applied for simultaneous carbon tetrachloride (CT) and nitrate removal from groundwater by using poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) as carbon source and biocarrier. After 80 days continuous operation, the nitrate and CT removal efficiencies in the biofilm reactor were high of 98% and 94.3%, respectively. After PBS-biofilm formation, protein (PN) content in loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) significantly increased 2.6 and 4.0 times higher in the presence of

Cadmium Selenide Formation Influences the Production and Characteristics of Extracellular Polymeric Substances of Anaerobic Granular Sludge.

Feeding cadmium (II) and selenium (IV) simultaneously to anaerobic granular sludge with the aim of synthesizing cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanoparticles induces compositional changes in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) matrix of this sludge. A methanogenic anaerobic granular sludge was repeatedly exposed to Cd(II) (10-50 mg L-1) and selenite (79 mg L-1) for 300 days at pH 7.3 and 30 °C in a fed-batch feeding regime for enrichment of Se-reducing bacteria and synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles. EPS fingerprints of the granular sludge, obtained by size exclusion chromatography coupled to a

Mutagenicity of ozonation and chlorination products from p-hydroxybenzaldehyde.

p-Hydroxybenzaldehyde, a component of soil humic substances, was ozonated and chlorinated. The ether extract and the residue were subjected to the Ames assay; mutagenic activities were identified. The non-ionic resin CSP800 and the anion exchange resin CHPA25 were used for separation of mutagenic compounds. The compounds in the water layer were not adsorbed on CSP800 or CHPA25 and exhibited strong mutagenic activity. Mutagenic activity was reduced as the added chlorine was increased. Ether extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and chloral, 1,3-dichloro-2-propan

Assessing long-term stability of arsenic immobilization by iron-impregnated biochar under simulated irrigation and accelerated aging.

Arsenic (As) contamination in agricultural soils poses significant risks to food safety and human health, particularly in regions relying on As-contaminated groundwater for irrigation. This study evaluates the efficacy of iron-impregnated biochar (Fe/TBC) in mitigating As leaching and enhancing long-term immobilization in two contrasting soils (sandy loam PP1 and sandy U43) under simulated irrigation and accelerated aging conditions. Statistical analyses including ANOVA and MANOVA revealed that Fe/TBC significantly improved As retention (up to 88%) and reduced post-aging As remobilization (to

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Synergistic Regulation of Glucose and Clay Minerals on Polyphenol-Maillard Mediated Abiotic Humification.

The synergistic effects of glucose (Glu) concentration and clay mineral type (kaolinite [Kao], montmorillonite [Mon]) on abiotic humification via the polyphenol-Maillard reaction remain poorly understood. To address these scientific challenges, a series of controlled, sterile batch experiments was conducted. Specifically, a glucose concentration gradient (0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.12, and 0.24 mol/L) was established; Kao and Mon were separately introduced as mineral catalysts; and the Maillard reaction was facilitated in the presence of catechol and glycine under strictly abiotic conditions to preclude

Temporal dynamics of soil dissolved organic matter influenced by biochar and microplastics: Insights from molecular and optical signatures.

Microplastic (MP) pollution in soil has raised concerns about its impact on the dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Biochar (BC) influence MP-induced DOM dynamics, the specific mechanisms, especially for iron-modified biochar (FeBC), remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of BCs and FeBCs on DOM composition in paddy soil amended with biodegradable (polybutylene succinate, PBS) and conventional (polystyrene, PS) MPs over a 60-day incubation, using combined optical (EEM-PARAFAC) and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometric (FT-ICR MS) characterization. Unmodified BCs

Biochar improves the humification process during pig manure composting: Insights into roles of the bacterial community and metabolic functions.

Biochar could promote humification in composting, nevertheless, its mechanism has not been fully explored from the perspective of the overall bacterial community and its metabolism. This study investigated the effects of bamboo charcoal (BC) and wheat straw biochar (WSB) on the humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) contents during pig manure composting. The results showed that BC enhanced humification more than WSB, and significantly increased the HA content and HA/FA ratio. The bacterial community structure under BC differed from those under the other treatments, and BC increased the abundance

Biochar alleviates inhibition effects of humic acid on anaerobic digestion: Insights to performances and mechanisms.

To recover methane from waste activated sludge through anaerobic digestion (AD) is one promising alternative to achieve carbon neutrality for wastewater treatment plants. However, humic acids (HAs) are one of the major compositions in waste activated sludge, and their accumulation performs inhibition effects on AD. This study investigated the potentials of biochar (BC) in alleviating inhibition effects of HAs on AD. Results showed that although the accumulated HAs reduced methane yield by 9.37% compared to control, the highest methane yield, 132.6 mL CH4/g VSS, was obtained after adding BC, wh

Preparation of calcium-based phosphate adsorbent and mineral-rich humic acid fertilizer from biomass ash and bamboo by hydrothermal-pyrolysis: Performance and mechanism.

Biomass ash (BA) contains alkaline cations such as K, Ca, and Mg. Due to its high pH, direct application to the soil may result in soil salinization. Composting of BA with organic matter is an effective strategy, but the composting cycle is long and there is a large amount of insoluble residue in the product. Therefore, this research proposed for the first time using the hydrothermal method to rapidly convert BA and bamboo powder (BP) into water - soluble fertilizer (WSF) within 4 h. The insoluble hydrothermal residue was further converted into calcium - rich biochar phosphorus adsorption mate

Effects of biochar-loaded microbial agent in regulating nitrogen transformation and integration into humification for straw composting.

Exogenous additives can impact organic matter transformation in composting, but their effects on nitrogen conversion and humification in straw composting require clarification. This study investigated how rice husk biochar-loaded microbial agent (RM) affects nitrogen transformation and humification during straw composting. Results showed that the addition of RM enhanced ammonia oxidation and assimilation during composting, leading to a 10.32%-22.27% increase in total nitrogen content. Furthermore, the RM treatment enriched nitrogen-converting microbes such as Longispora and Coprinopsis, enhanc

Enhanced humic acid removal by sludge activated carbon/Fe2+ composite in peroxymonosulfate activation: mechanism and performance.

In subsurface water, humic acid (HA) can react with active chlorine to form carcinogenic compounds, posing ecological issues and health risks. This study aims to create sludge activated carbon (SAC), combine it with Fe2+, and activate peroxosulfate (PMS) to remove HA from water. To verify the successful modification of SAC, the physicochemical properties were characterized using various methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, in the Fe2+/SAC/P

Migration of nanocolloid-carrying antibiotics in paddy red soil during the organic fertilization process.

Soil nanocolloids are highly mobile and can act as carriers for the transport of antibiotics to a wider and deeper range of soils; however, the inherent behavior and mechanism of nanocolloid-carrying antibiotics in soil remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the migration of antibiotics in paddy red soil during the organic fertilization process using four common soil nanocolloids: kaolin (KL), montmorillonite (MT), hematite (HT), and humic acid (HA). The results showed that nanocolloid carriers promoted the intra-medium (from soil surface to the bottom) an

Accelerating the humification mechanism of dissolved organic matter using biochar during vermicomposting of dewatered sludge.

The use of biochar can accelerate the vermicomposting process of dewatered sludge. However, the underlying mechanism of vermicompost maturity with biochar is still unclear. This study investigated the effect of biochar on sludge maturation during vermicomposting by analyzing the spectroscopic characteristics of dissolved organic matter. For this, dewatered sludge mixed with and without 5 % biochar were separately vermicomposted. The results showed that the biochar could significantly increase the biomass of earthworms as well as the activity and abundances of bacteria and eukaryotes (P < 0.05)

Remediation potential of magnetic biochar in lead smelting sites: Insight from the complexation of dissolved organic matter with potentially toxic elements.

Magnetic biochar has been widely used in potentially toxic elements (PTEs) polluted soils due to its magnetic separation capability and synchronous immobilization for multiple metals. However, the contribution of magnetic biochar to soil dissolve organic material (SDOM) and its binding behavior with PTEs needs to be further clarified prior to its remediation application on lead smelting sites. In this study, multi-spectral techniques of excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and two-dimensional FTIR correlation spectroscopy (2D-FTIR-COS) were used to explore the evolution c

Reciprocal Interactions of Abiotic and Biotic Dechlorination of Chloroethenes in Soil.

Chloroethenes (CEs) as common organic pollutants in soil could be attenuated via abiotic and biotic dechlorination. Nonetheless, information on the key catalyzing matter and their reciprocal interactions remains scarce. In this study, FeS was identified as a major catalyzing matter in soil for the abiotic dechlorination of CEs, and acetylene could be employed as an indicator of the FeS-mediated abiotic CE-dechlorination. Organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB)-mediated dechlorination enhanced abiotic CEs-to-acetylene potential by providing dichloroethenes (DCEs) and trichloroethene (TCE) since

Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis to determine chlorine decay constants in urban water distribution system.

This study applied a method for estimating chlorine decay constant (k) in urban water distribution systems using fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy-parallel factor analysis (FEEM-PARAFAC), considering that it accounts for the influence of organic matter in the target area. The simultaneous impacts of seasonal variations on chlorine consumption and dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition were investigated for a year in three full-scale water distribution systems in I city (areas S, K, and G). Bulk decay constants (kb) were obtained through bottle tests, and the kb value was
