A bioinspired MXene-based flexible humidity sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity for noncontact interaction and physiological monitoring.

Monitoring humidity accurately and reliably is critical for healthcare, human-machine interaction, and smart systems. However, existing humidity sensors struggle to simultaneously achieve ultrahigh sensitivity, fast response, environmental stability, and mechanical flexibility. Inspired by the cerebral cortex's folded structure and neural protection mechanisms, we develop a bioinspired flexible humidity sensor based on alkalized MXene (aMXene), oxygen vacancy-engineered TiO2 (Ov-TiO2), and sodium lignosulfonate (SL). The aMXene mimics cortical folds to provide abundant water-adsorption sites,

Biomimetic phase-separated bilayer gel sensors with robust interfacial adhesion for high-humidity and underwater communication.

Traditional hydrogel-based flexible sensors suffer from structural instability and severe electrical fluctuations in high-humidity or underwater environments due to their single-layer networks and poor water resistance. Inspired by the multi-layered structure of biological surfaces, this research develops a biomimetic, phase-separated bilayer flexible material (DAC-Gel-PAM-BA-50IL) comprising a skin-conforming hydrogel substrate and a hydrophobic outer ionogel layer. The inner dialdehyde cellulose (DAC)/gelatin/polyacrylamide dual-network hydrogel provides exceptional biological tissue adhesio

Active Control of Terahertz Transmission via Humidity-Responsive Swelling of Submicron Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Coated Nanoresonators.

This study demonstrates active control of terahertz (THz) transmission by exploiting the humidity-driven swelling of a submicron poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film integrated with metallic nanoresonators. Conventional THz modulators typically require bulk-like membranes tens of micrometers thick to compensate for weak light-matter interaction, which inevitably results in slow, diffusion-limited response times. In contrast, our approach utilizes field confinement near nanometer gaps to achieve high modulation depth with an ultrathin layer, offering a potential route to high-speed operation. Under 9

Thermal Thresholds and Genetic Sensitivity in Barrel Racing Performance of Quarter Horses Across Temperature-Humidity Indices.

Heat stress is an increasingly important challenge for the performance and welfare of equine athletes, particularly in competitions conducted across diverse climatic conditions. Understanding the genetic basis of performance responses to increasing thermal load is therefore essential to support robust genetic evaluation and sustainable selection strategies. The objective of this study was to evaluate barrel racing performance of Brazilian Quarter Horses across thermal environments defined by two widely used indicators, the temperature-humidity index (THI) and the wet bulb globe temperature (WB

Humidity and temperature interact in breaking physical dormancy in Fabaceae seeds from the Brazilian semiarid region.

PREMISE: In semiarid ecosystems such as the Brazilian Caatinga, physical seed dormancy (PY) is critical for plant persistence when water is unpredictable, but how soil moisture and temperature regulate PY release and seed longevity in species of native Fabaceae that have different growth forms is unknown. METHODS: Seeds of the herbaceous species Centrosema pascuorum and Crotalaria retusa and tree species Mimosa ophthalmocentra, M. tenuiflora, and Piptadenia retusa were collected in the Caatinga and tested in the field and laboratory to assess dormancy, viability, and germination. Seeds were e

Carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate/polyethylene glycol phase-change foams with humidity-adaptive low-temperature buffering performance.

The performance deterioration of phase-change composites in humid environments severely restricts their practical applications. Herein, A novel polysaccharide-based foam with low-temperature buffering properties was fabricated through electrostatic self-assembly of carboxymethyl chitosan and sodium alginate combined with mechanical foaming. This composite process enables the encapsulation of polyethylene glycol while simultaneously stabilizing the foam structure generated by mechanical agitation. Remarkably, without any hydrophobic modification, the phase-change foam exhibits long-term structu

Humidity-independent highly selective H2S sensor based on ruthenium doped In2O3 synthesized using bio-template method.

Highly selective hydrogen sulfide sensor based on 3 wt% Ruthenium doped In2O3 obtained by biotemplate synthesis was fabricated. For this, purified cellulose was impregnated with a solution containing Indium acetate In(CH3COO)3 and Ruthenium acetylacetonate Ru(C5H7O2)3, dried and calcined at 600 оС. Nanomaterial obtained using this method consists of sintered 15 - 20 nm grains. The limit of Н2S detection of the sensor is much below 100 ppb. The sensor characteristics of the sensor were determined both at stationary temperature and at the pulse heating of the sensor from 100 to 450 оС with 15 s

From volatile organic compounds to aerosols: quantum-level insights into humidity-induced cluster formation in atmospheres.

New particle formation (NPF) is a key factor in producing the aerosol populations in the atmosphere. This has enormous effects on controlling the climate, improving air quality, and protecting human health. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a significant cause of NPF because they help prenucleation clusters form, which are the building blocks of aerosol particles. We employed density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the structure and thermodynamics of molecular clusters composed of acetic acid, acetone, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde in the presence of ammonia and varying amounts of

Imparting Chemiresistor with Humidity-Independent Sensitivity toward Trace-Level Formaldehyde via Substitutional Doping Platinum Single Atom.

The modification of metal oxides with noble metals is one of the most effective means of improving gas-sensing performance of chemiresistors, but it is often accompanied by unintended side effects such as sensor resistance increases up to unmeasurable levels. Herein, a carbonization-oxidation method is demonstrated using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique to realize platinum (Pt) single atom (SA) substitutional doping into SnO2 (named PtSA-SnO2). The substitutional doping strategy can obviously enhance gas-sensing properties, and meanwhile decrease sensor resistance by two orders of magnitud

Hydrophobic MOF/PDMS-Based QCM Sensors for VOCs Identification and Quantitative Detection in High-Humidity Environments.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential in quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) platforms for volatile organic compound (VOCs) detection and recognition due to their unique properties. However, the MOFs' hydrophilicity degrades performance in high-humidity environments, limiting reliable VOC sensing in complex environments. Herein, we propose a novel VOC virtual sensor array (VSA) using a single QCM sensor with an adsorption layer composed of MIL-101(Cr) MOF and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), realizing stable sensing and accurate identification for different VOCs under various relative

Modeling the Effect of Relative Humidity on Adsorption Dynamics of Volatile Organic Compound onto Activated Carbon.

A two-dimensional heterogeneous mathematical model was developed and validated to study the effect of relative humidity on volatile organic compound (VOC) adsorption onto activated carbon. The dynamic adsorption model consists of the macroscopic mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations and includes a multicomponent adsorption isotherm to predict the competitive adsorption equilibria between VOC and water vapor, which is described by an extended Manes method. Experimental verifications show that the model predicted the breakthrough profiles during competitive adsorption of the studied

Effect of ambient temperature and relative humidity on interfacial temperature during early stages of drop evaporation.

Understanding drop evaporation mechanisms is important for many industrial, biological, and other applications. Drops of organic solvents undergoing evaporation have been found to display distinct thermal patterns, which in turn depend on the physical properties of the liquid, the substrate, and ambient conditions. These patterns have been reported previously to be bulk patterns from the solid-liquid to the liquid-gas drop interface. In the present work the effect of ambient temperature and humidity during the first stage of evaporation, i.e., pinned contact line, is studied paying special att

Gonado-modulatory effects of high humidity is pineal dependent in Indian palm squirrel Funambulus pennanti (Wroughton).

F. pennanti presented a clear biphasic pineal mediated seasonal sexual cycle. This sexual cycle was essentially characterised by a very short period of sexual quiescence with an arrest of spermatogenesis during October-November. A small but clear decrease in sexual activity was also observed during March-April. This decrease in sexual activity, however, had no quantifiable effect on spermatogenesis. Sexual recrudescence was observed from December-January. The testes remained sexually active from January till September. Almost an inverse relationship was observed between pineal and testicular w

Water-confined CuFe Prussian blue analogues empower Nafion membranes for high-temperature/low-humidity fuel cells.

To combat Nafion dehydration under high-temperature, low-humidity conditions, we engineered a CuFe-PBA/Nafion composite membrane by integrating edge-passivated CuFe Prussian blue analogue nanocubes. The 1.0 wt% composite membrane attains a proton conductivity of 72 mS cm-1 at 80 °C/75% relative humidity (RH) and a peak power density of 908 mW cm-2 at 110 °C/40% RH, while maintaining mechanical and Fenton oxidative stability.
