Uncovering safety signals of duloxetine: Real-world evidence from the FAERS database.

Duloxetine, a widely used antidepressant, has not been adequately studied for its long-term adverse effects. This study aims to characterize the long-term safety of duloxetine in the real world. FAERS data from Q1 2004 to Q3 2024 were retrieved, covering adverse event (AEs) reports related to duloxetine. The data were analyzed using algorithms such as ROR, PRR, BCPNN, and MGPS. A total of 4876 AEs were collected, involving 52,205 patients. The top three System Organ Classes (SOCs) were psychiatric disorders, nervous system disorders, and general disorders and administration site conditions. Th

Slippery Consequences: An Eight-Year Review of Temporary Ice Rink-Related Hand and Wrist Injuries at a Major Trauma Centre.

Introduction Temporary ice rinks are popular seasonal attractions but pose significant risks of injuries due to variable surface conditions, high user density, and limited safety infrastructure. Distal radius fractures are well recognised in this context, yet long-term data describing their burden and management remain limited. This study aimed to characterise injury patterns and assess their impact on imaging, management, and surgical workload. Methods A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database was conducted at a major trauma centre in the United Kingdom, covering temporary

Triple extrafine fixed-dose combination in asthma: from randomized controlled trials to real-world evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Small airway dysfunction affects 50-90% of asthmatic patients, leading to airway remodeling, worsening symptoms, and quality of life. Targeting small airway dysfunction with inhaled extrafine formulations, with a mass median aerodynamic diameter < 2 µm, is crucial. Triple extrafine fixed-dose combination with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), long-acting β2-agonists (LABA), and long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMA) been approved for uncontrolled asthma, supported by TRIMARAN and TRIGGER randomized controlled trials (RCT). However, while RCTs offer valuable efficacy and safety da

The impact of canine African trypanosomiasis in anti-poaching dogs in the Republic of Zambia.

Zambia introduced canine units in 2014 as an anti-poaching tool. Working in challenging environments, these dogs face several health threats, one being the protozoal, vector-borne canine African trypanosomiasis (CAT). This report aims to investigate the incidence, management and impact of CAT on Zambia's canine units. Case data during 2019-2023 were collated to investigate incidence and clinical trends. A questionnaire examining mitigation methods and perceived impact of the disease was distributed. Participants, conservation organisations with canine units, were identified using non-probabili

Phase changing material: an alternative method for cooling babies with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) has been proved effective. Standard equipment is expensive, while ice packs used in low resource settings are labour intensive and associated with wider temperature fluctuations. OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of using phase changing material (PCM) as an alternative method for providing therapeutic hypothermia. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 41 babies with HIE who had been cooled with PCM (OM 32 or HS 29) to a target rectal temperature of 33-34°C. Rectal temperature was continuously monitored and reco

Occurrence and morphogenetic characteristics of Gyrodactylus (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) from a rainbow trout farm (Lake Ladoga, Russia).

Gyrodactylus parasite infected juveniles on rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792) from a fish farm in Lake Ladoga were investigated. The observed cases of infection in fish featured a high prevalence, when almost all of the fish were infected. However, if an outbreak of the monogenean infection is observed in spring, the intensity of the infection may be low, and when the infection occurs in the ice-covered period (late autumn - winter), the number of parasites on the fins of a single fish may exceed 3000 specimens. Molecular identification of the parasite demonstrated that the inf

Enhanced Methodologies to Enumerate Persons Experiencing Homelessness in a Large Urban Area.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness is a public health problem, and persons experiencing homelessness are a vulnerable population. Estimates of the number of persons experiencing homelessness inform funding allocations and services planning and directly determine the ability of a community to intervene effectively in homelessness. The point-in-time (PIT) count presents a logistical problem in large urban areas, particularly those covering a vast geographical area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Working together, academia, local government, and community organizations improved the methodology for the count. Sp

Seasonal variation of herbicide concentrations in prairie farm dugouts.

Prairie farm dugouts are frequently constructed for use as potable water sources. Consequently, cumulative pesticide inputs via atmospheric deposition and surface runoff may constitute a risk to human health. Since, relative to other pesticides, herbicides are used in greatest amount on the Canadian prairies, herbicide concentrations were intensively monitored in three dugouts over three growing seasons. Herbicides were detected in the water of all three dugouts each growing season which may reflect cumulative inputs from atmospheric and surface processes over the lifetimes of the dugouts, whi

Alpha-Smooth Muscle Actin-Positive Perivascular Cells in Diabetic Retina and Choroid.

Structural alterations of pericytes in microvessels are important features of diabetic retinopathy. Although capillary pericytes had been known not to have α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA), a recent study revealed that a specific fixation method enabled the visualization of αSMA along retinal capillaries. In this study, we applied snap-fixation in wild type and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice to evaluate the differences in vascular smooth muscle cells of the retina and the choroid. Mice eyeballs were fixed in ice-cold methanol to prevent the depolymerization of filamentous actin. Snap-fixated

Electric fields for warming cryopreserved tissue.

Vitrification is enabling successful cryopreservation of progressively larger organs. Heating the whole volume of an organ simultaneously instead of only the surface during recovery from vitrification has been vital to this success. Volumetric warming enables faster and more uniform warming. Faster warming reduces ice crystal growth, ice recrystallization, and toxic effects of cryoprotectants by reducing ice growth time and cryoprotectant exposure time during warming. Nanowarming of intravascular magnetic nanoparticles by alternating magnetic fields, and direct dielectric warming by alternatin

Focused transoesophageal TOE (fTOE): A new accreditation pathway.

The concept of a focused ultrasound study to identify sources of haemodynamic instability has revolutionized patient care. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) using transthoracic scanning protocols, such as FUSIC Heart, has empowered non-cardiologists to rapidly identify and treat the major causes of haemodynamic instability. There are, however, circumstances when a transoesphageal, rather than transthoracic approach, may be preferrable. Due to the close anatomical proximity between the oesophagus, stomach and heart, a transoesphageal echocardiogram (TOE) can potentially overcome many of the limi

Acute hemophilic hemarthrosis: is local cryotherapy recommended?

The management of acute hemophilic hemarthrosis (AHH) classically has consisted of factor replacement therapy and RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation). However, there is still a controversy in the literature regarding the role of local cryotherapy (LC) in AHH. Areas covered: The aim of this article is to review the potential role of LC in AHH. Expert commentary: Some authors have reported that LC attenuates joint inflammation and has a positive influence on controlling articular swelling and temperature. However, other authors have stated that low temperature is associated with impairme
