PURPOSE: Although rare, septic shock can develop following the closure of an ileostomy created during colorectal cancer surgery. In such cases, bacterial translocation (BT) is considered the primary diagnosis, and appropriate treatment is provided. Herein, we investigated the risk factors of BT following ileostomy closure after colorectal cancer surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using the colorectal cancer database of Nagasaki University, focusing on 91 patients who received ileostomy closure after colorectal cancer surgery. The patients were divided into two groups bas

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess any predisposing factors to the morbidity of fashioning and reversal of diverting ileostomy in a prospective cohort of patients who have undergone TME and low colo-rectal or colo-anal anastomosis for rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients with rectal cancer undergoing low anterior resection and a defunctioning loop ileostomy in three surgical units from 2016 to 2020 were included in the study and retrospectively analyzed. Results: One hundred eighty-two patients from three centres were included. Ileostomy-relate

A mechanical obstruction is not a physiological entity, and when it occurs within the 30-day postoperative period, it is called an early postoperative small bowel obstruction. Kinking of small bowel segments at the ileostomy outlet secondary to a distended bladder is an unusual source of early postoperative small bowel obstruction. A 36-year-old female underwent a redo J-Pouch surgery and creation of loop ileostomy after pouch failure related to recurrent small bowel obstruction and perianal fistulae. Her foley catheter was removed on postoperative day 3 and she passed a trial of void test. On

BACKGROUND: Postoperative ileus (POI) is associated with increased patient discomfort, length of stay (LOS), and healthcare cost. There is a paucity of literature examining POI in patients who have an ileostomy formed at the time of surgery. We aimed to identify risk factors for and outcomes associated with POI following ileostomy formation.
METHODS: We included 261 consecutive non-emergent cases that included formation of an ileostomy by a board-certified colorectal surgeon at our institution from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2020. Demographic, clinical, and intraoperative factors associated wi

Evisceration of bowel through the stoma is a rare complication and only few cases have been reported. Although most cases occur in the context of long-standing parastomal hernias, early evisceration may also occur causing significant morbidity to patients. The reported patient is a 53-year-old male with bronchial asthma who was diagnosed to have metastatic colonic cancer underwent a trephine loop ileostomy for intestinal obstruction. On post-operative Day 7, he developed small bowel evisceration through the ileostomy site. The patient underwent an emergency laparotomy and found to have non-via

BACKGROUND: Up to 30% of patients with ulcerative colitis will undergo surgery resulting in an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) or permanent end ileostomy (EI). We aimed to understand how patients decide between these two options.
METHODS: We performed semi-structured interviews with ulcerative colitis patients who underwent surgery. Areas of questioning included the degree to which patients participated in decision-making, challenges experienced, and suggestions for improving the decision-making process. We analyzed the data using a directed content and thematic approach.
RESULTS: We int

BACKGROUND/AIM: High-output ileostomy (HOI) can affect quality of life, however, its primary cause remains unknown. This study aimed to identify a predictor of HOI after colorectal surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of forty-five patients who had undergone colorectal surgery with temporary ileostomy without postoperative complications, such as intra-abdominal abscess, paralytic ileus, outlet obstruction, or suture rupture, at our hospital between January 2016 and December 2017 were retrospectively investigated.
RESULTS: Significant differences in age, gender, operative situat

BACKGROUND: Ileal pouch rectal anastomosis (IPRA) is a possible alternative to permanent ileostomy when a short, normal-appearing rectal stump remains after total colectomy. Its outcomes in Crohn colitis (CC) patients have not been reported.
STUDY DESIGN: CC patients who underwent IPRA from 1992 to 2004 were identified. Operative and morbidity data were collected. Functional outcomes and quality-of-life (QOL) data were obtained using a mailed questionnaire and compared with matched patients who underwent straight ileorectal anastomosis (SIRA).
RESULTS: Twenty-three CC patients underwent IPRA

Between March 1989 and August 1990, we performed 21 stapled J pouch ileonal procedures (20 ulcerative colitis [UC], 1 familial polyposis [FP]) without an ileostomy in 19, of whom 13 were taking prednisone and eight underwent semi-emergent surgery for uncontrollable bleeding. During the same time, an additional four patients required a standard ileonal procedure. The results of anal manometry and clinical function were compared to 25 patients who had previously undergone mucosal stripping and a sutured J pouch ileoanal anastomoses with a temporary diverting ileostomy between October 1982 and Au

Two patients are described with chronic liver disease and portal hypertension in association with ulcerative colitis for which colectomy and ileostomy had been performed. Both patients developed bleeding from the varices situated around the ileostomy stoma and one also bled from the oesophageal varices. Each had a successful portacaval shunt performed because of this bleeding. The occurrence of such ileal varices is uncommon, but is important as a manifestation of portal hypertension. Although it can usually be easily controlled by local measures, portal-systemic shunt should always be conside

Ileostomy creation is common among patients with colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Surgical removal or diversion of the colon can result in nutrition complications, most notably dehydration-a leading cause of hospital readmission-and increased risk of kidney injury. Existing studies on fluid and electrolyte management after ileostomy largely focus on short bowel syndrome or high-output stomas, overlooking the physiological implications of ileostomy creation, even in patients with normal output. Given the absence of standardized oral rehydration protocols and li

Background/Objectives: Ostomy creation surgery is a common intervention for patients with conditions such as colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or acute events like trauma and gastrointestinal perforation. Individuals with an ileostomy face unique challenges when managing their new ostomies due to the liquid caustic nature of the effluent, increasing the likelihood of leakage and peristomal skin complications (PSCs). This sub-analysis evaluates the prevalence of leakage and PSCs in a cohort of individuals with a new ileostomy and examines the risk of leakage of different o

BACKGROUND: Ileostomy and colostomy are two effective clinical methods for intestinal diversion, but both have disadvantages. It is necessary to adopt corresponding nursing interventions for stoma patients to improve their quality of life.
AIM: The study explored the recovery status and nursing differences of patients who underwent temporary ileostomy and temporary colostomy.
DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: Patients who underwent temporary ostomy were divided into the ileostomy group and colostomy group according to the surgical method. Relevant clinical data of patients were

BACKGROUND: The evidence for the management of patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and permanent ileostomy (PI) is limited. We aimed to summarize the interventional studies related to the provision of adjunctive ostomy care in this population.
METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched from inception to January 5, 2024. Eligible studies were non-randomized or randomized controlled trials (RCTs), or comparative cohort studies predominantly recruiting participants with CD and/or ulcerative colitis (UC) with PI assessing interventions for the management of high stoma output, dis

BACKGROUND/AIM: During low anterior rectal resection for rectal cancer, a protective ileostomy (PI) is routinely created to reduce the severity of anastomotic complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the side-effects of PI during adjuvant chemotherapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort of patients was operated on for non-metastatic rectal cancer with a PI during 2005-2022. Patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) were compared with those not receiving AC. A subgroup analysis compared patients with early PI closure (<10 weeks) and those with a PI in place duri

Background Approximately 9,000 patients undergo ileostomy formation each year in England. This includes those formed in both the elective and emergency settings. Recent studies have indicated a stoma-related complication rate of up to 83%.The aim of the current study was to ascertain the most common indications for ileostomy formation and to determine whether there were differences in the complication rates depending on whether the surgery occurred in the emergency or elective setting. Methods The study was a retrospective audit conducted at the University Hospitals of Leicester. Inclusion cri
