A simple procedure to improve FMRIb Software Library Brain Extraction Tool performance.

The Oxford FMRIb Software Library (FSL) Brain Extraction Tool (BET) is a widely used algorithm for removing extracranial tissues from MR images. Although BET is effective and simple to operate, it often fails to exclude fully all non-brain tissues unless the centre of gravity of the brain is specified to the programme. In this communication we present a recursive procedure for using BET that is extremely robust for extracting brain images without any manual intervention. The approach was tested on 150 adult head volumes and produced accurate results in all cases. The approach is efficient and

Biofield potential simulation as a novel adjunt modality for continuous monitoring of breast lesions: a 3D numerical model.

Breast cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Early detection of this disease is the most effective way to reduce mortality. Although several new technologies show promise for improved capability of diagnosis, none have yet proved superior to traditional, X-ray film mammography in screening for breast cancer. More evaluation and development of new imaging tools and of promising skin surface electrical potential techniques is required and warranted. In the present study, we propose a theoretical three-dimensional, simplified and realistic model of the fe

AIP-Net: an attention-integrated pyramid network for computer-aided diagnosis and segmentation of gastric lesion in ultrasound images.

Objective.Automatic segmentation of gastric lesions in ultrasound images is crucial for the early diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. However, the limited amount of related research and the challenges posed by variable lesion morphology, artifacts, blurred boundaries, and intensity inhomogeneity make accurate segmentation particularly difficult, especially for less-experienced clinicians.Approach.To address these challenges, we propose a novel attention-integrated pyramid network (AIP-Net) designed to enhance segmentation accu

Adaptive soft erasure with edge self-attention for weakly supervised semantic segmentation: Thyroid ultrasound image case study.

[S U M M A R Y] Weakly supervised segmentation for medical images ease the reliance of models on pixel-level annotation while advancing the field of computer-aided diagnosis. However, the differences in nodule size in thyroid ultrasound images and the limitations of class activation maps in weakly supervised segmentation methods typically lead to under- and/or over-segmentation problems in real predictions. To alleviate this problem, we propose a weakly supervised segmentation neural network approach. This new method is based on a dual branch soft erase module that expands the foreground respo

Accuracy of automatic structure propagation for daily magnetic resonance image-guided head and neck radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Deformable image registration (DIR) and contour propagation are used in daily online adaptation for hybrid MRI linac (MRL) treatments. The accuracy of the propagated contours may vary depending on the chosen workflow (WF), affecting the amount of required manual corrections. This study investigated the impact of three different WFs of contour propagations produced by a clinical treatment planning system for a high-field MRL on head and neck cancer patients. METHODS: Seventeen patients referred for curative radiotherapy for oropharyngeal cancer underwent standard CT-bas

Multiplane Calcium Imaging Reveals Disrupted Development of Network Topology in Zebrafish pcdh19 Mutants.

Functional brain networks self-assemble during development, although the molecular basis of network assembly is poorly understood. Protocadherin-19 (pcdh19) is a homophilic cell adhesion molecule that is linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, and influences multiple cellular and developmental events in zebrafish. Although loss of PCDH19 in humans and model organisms leads to functional deficits, the underlying network defects remain unknown. Here, we employ multiplane, resonant-scanning in vivo two-photon calcium imaging of developing zebrafish, and use graph theory to characterize the develo

Accuracy of electromyometrial imaging of uterine contractions in clinical environment.

Clinically, uterine contractions are monitored with tocodynamometers or intrauterine pressure catheters. In the research setting, electromyography (EMG), which detects electrical activity of the uterus from a few electrodes on the abdomen, is feasible, can provide more accurate data than these other methods, and may be useful for predicting preterm birth. However, EMG lacks sufficient spatial resolution and coverage to reveal where uterine contractions originate, how they propagate, and whether preterm contractions differ between women who do and do not progress to preterm delivery. To address

Clinically validated dataset of 435 human colons segmented from CT colonography.

High-quality segmentation datasets are essential for advancing AI applications in medical imaging. However, it is challenging to generate such datasets for highly variable and complex organs like the colon. We introduce a dataset of 435 human colons, segmented from Computed Tomography Colonography (CTC) obtained from the publicly available The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA). Each scan includes a mask of the whole colon, including collapsed segments and the fluid, and a mask of only the gas-filled parts of the colon. The colon segmentation accuracy has been clinically validated by an expert abdo

AnchorCrafter: Animate Cyber-Anchors Selling Your Products via Human-Object Interacting Video Generation.

The generation of anchor-style product promotion videos presents promising opportunities in e-commerce, advertising, and consumer engagement. Despite advancements in pose-guided human video generation, creating product promotion videos remains challenging. In addressing this challenge, we identify the integration of human-object interactions (HOI) into pose-guided human video generation as a core issue. To this end, we introduce AnchorCrafter, a novel diffusion-based system designed to generate 2D videos featuring a target human and a customized object, achieving high visual fidelity and contr

Cone beam computed tomography reconstruction from truncated projections using prior information and transfer learning.

BACKGROUND: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used in clinical practice and small animal research for image guidance. The reconstruction quality will be compromised by severe truncation-related artifacts when the scanned object is not fully covered by the field of view (FOV). PURPOSE: This work aims to develop a Dual-Domain Deep learning-based method for CBCT Reconstruction from Truncated projections (D3CRT) through the guidance of non-truncated prior information. METHODS: The D3CRT comprised sequential procedures in both projection and image domains. First, in projection domain

Enhancing CT image segmentation accuracy through ensemble loss function optimization.

BACKGROUND: In CT-based medical image segmentation, the choice of loss function profoundly impacts the training efficacy of deep neural networks. Traditional loss functions like cross entropy (CE), Dice, Boundary, and TopK each have unique strengths and limitations, often introducing biases when used individually. PURPOSE: This study aims to enhance segmentation accuracy by optimizing ensemble loss functions, thereby addressing the biases and limitations of single loss functions and their linear combinations. METHODS: We implemented a comprehensive evaluation of loss function combinations by

Deep learning "super resolution" versus iterative reconstruction: Phantom-based image quality assessment.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning reconstruction (DLR) algorithms have begun replacing iterative reconstruction (IR) in CT. Besides the potential to reduce noise, the application of artificial intelligence can also allow for "super resolution," allowing traditional CT systems to produce images with improved spatial resolution by training against higher-resolution images. This study aims to characterize the image quality produced by a DLR "super resolution" algorithm. PURPOSE: This study compares Canon's Precise IQ Engine (PIQE) Cardiac, a DLR algorithm, with the AIDR Enhanced 3D iterative reconstruct

Cross-plane shear wave elastography for viscoelasticity imaging.

Objective.Shear wave elastography (SWE) is widely used for elasticity imaging, but conventional implementations remain confined to two-dimensional (2D) measurement planes and lack sensitivity to viscosity, an emerging biomarker linking shear wave dissipation and disease progression. The objective of this work is to extend SWE for viscoelasticity imaging beyond the measurement plane through methodological and acquisition-based advances.Approach.We introduce a cross-plane acquisition strategy in which multiple measurement planes are recorded per acoustic radiation force push to capture dissipati

N-Peaks: MRI intensity normalization based on normal tissue histogram peak intensities.

Objective. We propose a method called N-Peaks that normalizes intensity units in structural magnetic resonance (MR) images by harmonizing the intensities of certain reference tissues.Approach.The N-Peaks normalization requires an image and a number of normal tissue reference contours as input. A map of local intensity change is calculated, which is used to isolate homogeneous regions in each contour. An intensity histogram of the homogeneous voxels is calculated and the peak intensity on that histogram is identified to serve as a landmark. The image intensities are then transformed in a piecewi
