Shifts in frontal asymmetry underlying impulsive and controlled decision-making.

The frontal cortices are asymmetrically activated in impulsive and inhibitory action. However, no past work has examined shifts in frontal asymmetric activation during active impulse control or risk-taking behavior. The current study examined impulsive and controlled behavior in a behavioral risk-taking task (Balloon Analogue Risk Task) under alcohol or neutral cue exposure while EEG was recorded. Results revealed activity shifted towards greater relative left frontal activation on alcohol trials with impulsive behavior (balloon explosion) driven by reduced activation of the right inferior fro

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Aggression, Impulsivity, and History of Other- and Self-Directed Aggression.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is highly prevalent, with an estimated occurrence in the United States of more than 1.3 million per year. While one consequence of mTBI is impulsive aggressive behavior, very few studies have examined the relationship between history of mTBI and aggressive behavior in impulsively aggressive individuals. The authors examined the relationship between history of mTBI in a healthy control group (HC; N=453), a control group with psychiatric disorders (PC; N=486), and individuals with intermittent explosive disorder (IED; N=695), a disorder of primary impulsive agg

The spectrum of sociopathy in dementia.

Although well-known from head trauma and acute strokes, sociopathic behavior from dementia is less known and understood. This study reviewed 33 dementia patients who had been in trouble with the law. They were divided into two groups: 22 who committed impulsive sociopathic acts and 11 who committed non-impulsive acts. The impulsive patients demonstrated nonviolent acts, such as disinhibited sexual behavior or pathological stealing, and had disproportionate frontal-caudate atrophy on neuroimaging. The majority of non-impulsive patients demonstrated agitation-paranoia, sometimes with reactive ag

Impulse-control disorders in gilles de la tourette syndrome.

Impulse-control disorders (ICDs) are more common in clinic populations with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) than in the general population. The clinical phenomenology of ICDs differ between men with GTS (who tend to be externally impulsive) and women with GTS (who tend to be internally impulsive). This article reviews the relevant literature to-date on impulsivity in GTS, with special focus on intermittent, explosive disorder, self-injurious behavior, trichotillomania, and impulsive-compulsive sexual behavior. The medical and legal community should be aware of the full spectrum of organic

Developing and Validating a Definition of Impulsive/Reactive Aggression in Youth.

The goal of this study is to develop a rational data-driven definition of impulsive/reactive aggression and establish distinctions between impulsive/reactive aggression and other common childhood problems. This is a secondary analysis of data from Assessing Bipolar: A Community Academic Blend (ABACAB; N = 636, ages 5-18), Stanley Medical Research Institute N = 392, ages 5-17), and the Longitudinal Assessment of Manic Symptoms (LAMS; N = 679, ages 6-12) studies, which recruited youths seeking outpatient mental health services in academic medical centers and community clinics. Impulsivity and prefrontal hypometabolism in borderline personality disorder.

Prefrontal hypoperfusion and decreased glucose uptake in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are found in violent criminal offenders, murderers and aggressive psychiatric patients. These abnormalities may be independent of diagnosis and associated with impulsive-aggression as a personality trait. Impulsive-aggression is a clinical characteristic of borderline personality disorder (BPD) where it is associated with assaultive and suicidal behaviors. We conducted FDG-PET studies in 13 non-depressed, impulsive female subjects with BPD and 9 healthy controls to look for abnormalities in glucose metabolism

Galanin contributes to monoaminergic dysfunction and to dependent neurobehavioral comorbidities of epilepsy.

Status epilepticus (SE) in rats, along with chronic epilepsy, leads to the development of behavioral impairments resembling depressive disorder and/or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), thus reflecting respective comorbidities in epilepsy patients. Suppressed neurotransmitter tone in the raphe nucleus (RN)-prefrontal cortex (PFC) serotonergic pathway and in the locus coeruleus (LC)-PFC noradrenergic pathway underlies depressive- and impulsive-like behavioral deficits respectively. We examined possible mechanisms leading to the monoamine dysfunction in brainstem efferents, namely

Premotor functional connectivity predicts impulsivity in juvenile offenders.

Teenagers are often impulsive. In some cases this is a phase of normal development; in other cases impulsivity contributes to criminal behavior. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined resting-state functional connectivity among brain systems and behavioral measures of impulsivity in 107 juveniles incarcerated in a high-security facility. In less-impulsive juveniles and normal controls, motor planning regions were correlated with brain networks associated with spatial attention and executive control. In more-impulsive juveniles, these same regions correlated with the default-m

A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of fluoxetine in patients with intermittent explosive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a disorder of impulsive aggression that affects as many as 7.3% of the U.S. population during some period of life. Since central serotonergic (5-HT) system dysfunction is related to impulsive aggressive behavior, pharmacologic enhancement of 5-HT activity should reduce impulsive aggressive behavior in individuals with IED. METHOD: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of the selective 5-HT uptake inhibitor fluoxetine was conducted in 100 individuals with IED (research diagnostic criteria) and current histories of impulsive ag

Impulsive and non-impulsive suicide attempts in patients treated for alcohol dependence.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal behavior has been recognized as an increasing problem among alcohol-dependent subjects. The aim of the study was to identify correlates of impulsive and non-impulsive suicide attempts among a treated population of alcohol-dependent patients. METHODS: A total of 154 patients with alcohol dependence consecutively admitted for addiction treatment participated in the study. Suicidal behavior was assessed together with severity of alcohol dependence, childhood abuse, impulsivity, and family history. A stop-signal procedure was used as a behavioral measure of impulsivity. Investigating the impact of CBT on reducing impulsive clothing purchases among youths: A cognitive distortion perspective.

BACKGROUND: Impulsive buying behavior among youths, particularly in relation to clothing, represents a growing psychological and behavioral concern, often driven by cognitive distortions and difficulties in emotion regulation. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown promise in addressing maladaptive cognitions and behaviors; however, its targeted application to impulsive clothing purchases remains underexplored. Therefore, this study examined the effect of CBT on impulsive clothing buying behavior among young adults, with a specific focus on cognitive distortions and emotion regulation di

Assessing impulsivity changes in Alzheimer disease.

Impulsive behaviors are common in brain-damaged patients including those with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer disease (AD). The objective of this study was to develop and validate a short version of the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale assessing changes on 4 different dimensions of impulsivity, namely urgency, (lack of) premeditation, (lack of) perseverance, and sensation seeking, arising in the course of a neurodegenerative disease. To this end, caregivers of 83 probable AD patients completed a short questionnaire adapted from the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale. Exploratory and confi

5-HT2c agonist, lorcaserin, reduces aggressive responding in intermittent explosive disorder: A pilot study.

RATIONALE: Impulsive aggressive behavior is associated with reduced central function of serotonin (5-HT). Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors can reduce such behaviors, many with history of impulsive aggression do not respond adequately to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and may require treatment with a direct 5-HT agonist. OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that pretreatment with the selective 5-HT2c agonist, lorcaserin, can reduce aggressive responding in impulsively aggressive individuals. METHODS: Ten male and female adults were given lorcaserin (20 mg), or a matchin

Complex obsessive compulsive and impulsive symptoms in Tourette's syndrome.

Obsessive compulsive and impulsive symptoms are prevalent in patients with Tourette's Syndrome (TS) and well recognized as part of the TS spectrum. However, some complex obsessive compulsive and impulsive behaviors may be mistaken for other symptoms, such as complex tics or psychotic behavior. In addition, the overlap between tics, compulsions, and impulsive actions can make them impossible to discern from each other. Yet, the proper recognition of these symptoms is critical in optimizing treatment outcome in TS patients. This paper will review complex obsessive compulsive and impulsive behavi

Diazepam impairs behavioral inhibition but not delay discounting or risk taking in healthy adults.

There are reports that diazepam can increase, decrease, or have no effect on measures of impulsive behavior, which may be related, in part, to differences among the tasks used to measure impulsivity. This study examined the effects of a relatively high dose of diazepam (20 mg) on 5 measures of impulsive behavior in healthy adult men and women. Volunteers (N = 18) participated in a 2-session double-blind randomized design in which they received 20 mg diazepam or placebo. One hour after ingesting the capsule, participants completed mood questionnaires and several impulsivity tasks to measure sub

No association of COMT Val158Met polymorphism with suicidal behavior or CSF monoamine metabolites in mood disorders.

The Met allele of the Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) gene functional polymorphism (COMT-V158M) is associated with lower enzymatic activity than the Val allele and is reported to be associated with aggression, depression, and suicidal behavior. Since depression and impulsive-aggressive behavior may mediate risk for suicidal behavior, we assessed the association of this polymorphism with suicidal behavior. Clinical (impulsive aggression) and biological (CSF monoamine metabolites) endophenotypes were tested as potential mediators of the effect of genotype on suicide risk. Subjects with mood

Dissociable roles of dopamine D1 and nicotinic receptors in nicotine-motivated responding and impulsive action in a Go/No-Go self-administration task.

Cigarette smoking remains one of the most important preventable causes of premature death worldwide. However, the mechanisms sustaining nicotine dependence and relapse are incompletely understood, particularly the role of impulsive action in persistent tobacco use. Dopamine D1 and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors both regulate nicotine-related behavior, but whether they contribute differently to nicotine-motivated responding and nicotine-induced impulsive action is unclear. The present study examined the effects of D1 receptor blockade and stimulation in male and female rats trained to self-a

Cognitive Effort as a Compensatory Mechanism for Motor Control in Impulsivity.

Impulsivity, although commonly associated with maladaptive behavior, can influence how individuals manage cognitive and motor demands. This study analyzed the effect of impulsivity on motor control and cognitive effort during manual aiming tasks that varied in cognitive load. From an initial sample of 109 volunteers, a final sample of 63 right-handed adults was classified as high or low impulsive based on Brazilian Portuguese version of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 scores. Participants performed two aiming task conditions with different execution demands, while electroencephalographic wo

Familial pathways to early-onset suicide attempt: risk for suicidal behavior in offspring of mood-disordered suicide attempters.

BACKGROUND: Although adoption, twin, and family studies have shown that suicidal behavior is familial, the risk factors for familial transmission from parent to child remain unclear. METHODS: A high-risk family study was conducted comparing the offspring of 2 mood-disordered groups: suicide attempters and nonattempters. Recruited from 2 sites, probands were 81 attempters and 55 nonattempters, with 183 and 116 offspring, respectively. Offspring were assessed by investigators masked to proband status. Probands and offspring were assessed with respect to psychopathologic findings, suicide attemp
