Risk of dietary exposure to aflatoxins and fumonisins in infants less than 6 months of age in Rombo, Northern Tanzania.

Infants less than 6 months of age receiving foods other than breast milk are at a high risk of exposure to mycotoxins. We surveyed food intake and estimated the risk of exposures to aflatoxin and fumonisin mycotoxins for infants less than 6 months of age in Northern Tanzania. A total of 143 infants were progressively recruited and three follow-up visits were made at 1, 3 and 5 months of age. A 24-h dietary recall technique was used to estimate flour intake of infants who had been introduced to maize foods. Aflatoxins and fumonisins in the flours were analysed using high-performance liquid chro

Pesticide, heavy metal, and other chemical residues in infant and toddler total diet samples. (IV). October 1977-September 1978.

The Food and Drug Administration has conducted the Total Diet Study since 1964. The program originally focused on the average total diet of the young adult male but was eventually expanded to include the average total diets of infants and toddlers. This report is the fourth in the infant and toddler series and represents residues found in market basket samples, i.e., items comprising the average 2-week diet of infants and toddlers, collected in 10 different cities throughout 4 geographic areas of the United States from October 1977 through September 1978. The results are based on analyses of f

Association between infant feeding practices and infant growth by maternal HIV and antiretroviral therapy status: a prospective study in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Infants who are HIV-Exposed Uninfected (HEU) may experience adverse growth outcomes compared to those HIV-Unexposed Uninfected (HUU). However, there are limited data from the context of universal antiretroviral therapy (ART) and promotion of extended breastfeeding (BF) for infants HEU. We compared the growth of infants HEU and HUU enrolled January 2017-July 2018 from the same community in Cape Town, South Africa. METHODS: Data were collected during pregnancy and at seven days, 10 weeks, six and 12 months postpartum. Infant birth weight and length were converted to weight-for-age a

Breastfeeding during maternal or infant illness.

The continuation of breastfeeding during a hospital stay is not only possible, it can be beneficial for both the mother and the infant. The ill mother avoids breast engorgement and possible mastitis; the infant of an ill mother continues to receive, in breast milk, antibodies to the mother's illness. Through breast milk, an ill infant receives antibodies to his illness, liquids, and an easily digested, nourishing food. In addition, the physical and emotional comfort the mother and infant give each other eases the job of the nurse who cares for them. Hospital policies that take a woman's lactat

Selection of complementary foods based on optimal nutritional values.

Human milk is beneficial for growth and development of infants. Several factors result in mothers ceasing breastfeeding which leads to introduction of breast-milk substitutes (BMS). In some communities traditional foods are given as BMS, in others they are given as complementary foods during weaning. Improper food selection at this stage is associated with a high prevalence of malnutrition in children under 5 years. Here we listed the traditional foods from four continents and compared them with human milk based on their dietary contents. Vitamins such as thiamine (~[2-10] folds), riboflavin (

Genomic Characterization of Listeria monocytogenes Isolates Associated with Clinical Listeriosis and the Food Production Environment in Ireland.

Listeria monocytogenes is a major human foodborne pathogen that is prevalent in the natural environment and has a high case fatality rate. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis has emerged as a valuable methodology for the classification of L. monocytogenes isolates and the identification of virulence islands that may influence infectivity. In this study, WGS was used to provide an insight into 25 L. monocytogenes isolates from cases of clinical infection in Ireland between 2013 and 2015. Clinical strains were either lineage I (14 isolates) or lineage II (11 isolates), with 12 clonal complexe

A foodborne outbreak of gastroenteritis associated with Norwalk-like viruses: first molecular traceback to deli sandwiches contaminated during preparation.

In March 1998, an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis occurred among students at a Texas university. Overall, 125 ill students sought medical care. Case-control studies revealed that illness was significantly associated with eating foods from the university's main cafeteria deli bar on 9 and 10 March. Stool specimens from 9 (50%) of 18 ill students and samples of deli ham showed evidence of Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) by reverse-transcriptase (RT) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. A food handler who prepared sandwiches for lunch on 9 March reported that her infant had been sick with watery

Neuroprotective nutrients in pregnancy and infant brain function.

Neuroprotective nutrients including omega 3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), choline, and carotenoids play an important role in infant brain structure and function; however, the effects of maternal nutrition on the infant brain are understudied. We leveraged data from our large randomized clinical trial among pregnant women to determine whether maternal nutrients including DHA, choline, lutein/zeaxanthin (L/Z) and egg intake (a food source of these nutrients) were related to infant brain function. Data from n = 241 maternal and infant dyads were included in this secondary analysis. Food

Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome Masquerading as Sepsis in Early Infancy.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a less common etiology of vomiting in an infant and can be challenging to diagnose. The absence of confirmatory laboratory testing or clear clinical criteria and signs/symptoms that overlap with other entities can lead to instances of misdiagnosis. We present a case of an exclusively breastfed infant who presented with emesis and dehydration. The infant was initially diagnosed with and treated for sepsis but was eventually diagnosed with FPIES. We discuss challenges in making a diagnosis of FPIES and potential factors that can distinguish

Early infant appetitive traits are associated with growth status and adiposity in African-American infants and toddlers.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined infant appetitive traits in minority populations or among mothers with obesity. AIM: To test associations of appetitive traits with nutritional exposures and growth in African-American children up to age 24m. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Mothers with pre-pregnancy BMI <25 or ≥30 and their infants were included (n = 222). The Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (BEBQ) at 3m captured appetitive traits; BMI z-scores (BMIZ) at 3, 12 and 24m were examined. Internal consistency of BEBQ constructs was tested and their association with growth outcomes evaluated using c

Eczema and early solid feeding in preterm infants.

AIMS: To establish whether development of eczema is influenced by feeding practices in preterm infants, while taking account of confounding factors. METHODS: Data were assembled from 257 infants born prematurely and studied to 12 months post-term. Logistic regression analysis was performed to establish the association between feeding practices and eczema, allowing for potential confounding factors including the infants' gender, parental atopic status, social background, and parental smoking habits. RESULTS: For the development of eczema (with or without other symptoms) by 12 months post-term

Drug or food anaphylaxis?

A 9-month-old infant with a personal history of atopic dermatitis and no family history of atopy presented to the outpatient allergy clinic for evaluation of suspected food and drug allergy. The mother breastfed the infant from birth and had introduced only fruits and vegetables into his diet. After the first dose of Ferplex® (iron protein succinylate), the infant had an immediate moderate systemic reaction that required emergency care and treatment with intramuscular epinephrine. The drug was indicated for the treatment of acute anemia. Skin prick test and specific IgE were done, confirming s

[Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) - a rare disease with frequent symptoms - the practitioner's compendium].

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy with varying degrees of severity. The acute form of the disease is manifested by vomiting, lethargy and pallor, which usually appear within 1-4 hours after food ingestion, and can lead to shock. The most common trigger foods are: cow's milk, soy, rice and oats. Chronic FPIES is typical for infants fed with cow's milk or soy infant formula and is manifested by chronic vomiting, diarrhea and failure to thrive. In the vast majority of patients with FPIES, the analysis of the clinical history is sufficient to di

The Montreal Children's Hospital Feeding Scale: Relationships with parental report of child eating behaviours and observed feeding interactions.

UNLABELLED: Feeding problems are common, with implications for nutrition, growth and family stress, placing burden on primary care services. The Montreal Children's Hospital Feeding Scale (MCHFS) is a quick and reliable measure of feeding problems for clinical settings, but there is little examination of its relationship to commonly used research measures of parental feeding practice, child eating behaviour and observations of parent-infant interaction at mealtimes. We examined the relationships between the MCHFS, demographics and early feeding history, weight across the first year, parental r

Honey and other environmental risk factors for infant botulism.

Infant botulism results from the in vivo production of toxin by Clostridium botulinum after it has colonized the infant's gut. Epidemiologic and laboratory investigations of this recently recognized disease were undertaken to identify risk factors and routes by which C. botulinum spores might reach susceptible infants. Clostridium botulinum organisms, but no preformed toxin, were identified in six different honey specimens fed to three California patients with infant botulism, as well as from 10% (9/90) of honey specimens studied. By food exposure history, honey was significantly associated wi

Improving Blood Retinol Concentrations with Complementary Foods Fortified with Moringa oleifera Leaf Powder - A Pilot Study.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains a major public health issue and is reported to be the cause of about 6 percent of child deaths under the age of 5 years in Africa. Inadequate dietary intake of vitamin A-rich foods is a major cause of VAD. Moringa oleifera leaf powder (MLP) is rich in nutrients particularly vitamin A and its use in infant feeding has been explored. This pilot study was designed to test the efficacy of MLP in improving blood retinol concentrations among infants in a rural district in Ghana. A subset of infants participating in a randomized controlled trial (ISRCTN14377902) wer

Allergic proctocolitis refractory to maternal hypoallergenic diet in exclusively breast-fed infants: a clinical observation.

BACKGROUND: Allergic proctocolitis (APC) in exclusively breast-fed infants is caused by food proteins, deriving from maternal diet, transferred through lactation. In most cases a maternal cow milk-free diet leads to a prompt resolution of rectal bleeding, while in some patients a multiple food allergy can occur. The aim of this study was to assess whether the atopy patch test (APT) could be helpful to identify this subgroup of patients requiring to discontinue breast-feeding due to polisensitization. Additionally, we assessed the efficacy of an amino acid-based formula (AAF) when multiple food
