Growth and adiposity of term infants fed whey-predominant or casein-predominant formulas or human milk.

Growth, estimated composition of weight gained, and stool patterns of term infants who were fed either a whey-predominant formula or a casein-predominant formula in a random design and of breast-fed infants were compared. All infants (N = 111) were healthy, singleton products of uncomplicated pregnancies. Birth weights and other anthropometric measures in the first few days of life were not different among the three feeding groups. Formula or breast milk was the infants' principal source of energy from birth to age 16 weeks. Average energy intakes of formula-fed infants and change of intakes w

Evaluation in guinea pigs of the allergenic capacity of two infant formulae based on hydrolyzed milk proteins.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the potential capacity of infant formulae based, respectively, on hydrolyzed casein and on hydrolyzed whey proteins to induce sensitization in guinea pigs. This potential capacity was tested by intravenous challenges with centrifuged formulae and by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. The results showed that neither formula was sensitizing, therefore suggesting that protein hydrolyzates can be considered a suitable cow's milk substitute for infants with cow's milk protein intolerance. However, further studies are necessary in order to investigate whe

Enteral Infant Formulas: A Narrative Review of Historical Evolution, Nutritional Composition, and Clinical Use in Pediatrics.

This narrative review aims to describe the evolution, classification, nutritional composition, and clinical applications of enteral infant formulas, with an emphasis on pediatric patients who are unable to be breastfed or follow conventional feeding methods. The primary objective is to analyze the different types of formulas available - polymeric, hydrolyzed, elemental, and blenderized - and their indications based on clinical scenarios and specific patient needs. The methodology used was a non-systematic narrative review. Relevant scientific literature was selected through a targeted search o

Cariogenic Potential of Lactose-Free Infant Formulas: An In Vitro Analysis of Streptococcus mutans Biofilm and Acidogenicity.

AIM: Lactose-free infant formulas (LFs) are commonly used for children with lactose intolerance, but their potential contribution to early childhood caries (ECC) remains poorly understood, particularly with varying sugar compositions. The present study aimed to assess the biofilm-forming ability, acidogenicity, and structural biofilm characteristics of LFs with and without sucrose using a Streptococcus mutans in vitro model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two LFs (with and without 24% sucrose) were tested alongside brain heart infusion (BHI) (negative control) and BHI + 10% sucrose (positive control)

Comparison of aroma properties of infant formulas: Differences in key aroma compounds and their possible origins in processing.

Aroma is an important attribute of infant formula (IF). In this study, 218 volatiles and 62 odor-active compounds were detected from IF by dynamic headspace sampling combined with comprehensive 2-dimensional gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry. Aldehydes and ketones were determined as the most abundant odor-active compounds. Among them, the contents of pentanal and hexanal were the most abundant, while 1-octen-3-one had the highest flavor dilution factor and odor activity value in most of the IF. Sensory evaluation and electronic nose analysis showed that the skimming process, th

Using feeding to reduce pain during vaccination of formula-fed infants: a randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and potential side effects of formula feeding to reduce pain during vaccination among infants. STUDY DESIGN: In the setting of well-baby clinics we recruited a community-based sample of full-term born infants who were already formula fed by the choice of the parents (n=48, aged 4-10 weeks) and received their first DTaP-IPV-HepB-Hib and pneumococcal vaccinations and randomised them into two groups. To evaluate pain experienced during vaccination we compared infants who drank formula feeding before, during and after vaccination with infants who did not. O

The aetiology of diarrhoea, pneumonia and respiratory colonization of HIV-exposed infants randomized to breast- or formula-feeding.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea and pneumonia are common causes of childhood death in sub-Saharan Africa but there are few studies describing specific pathogens. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to describe the pathogens associated with diarrhoea, pneumonia and oropharyngeal colonization in children born to HIV-infected women (HIV-exposed infants). METHODS: The Mashi Study randomized 1200 HIV-infected women and their infants to breastfeed for 6 months with ZDV prophylaxis or formula-feed with 4 weeks of ZDV. Children were tested for HIV by PCR at 1, 4, 7, 9 and 12 months and by ELISA at 18 months. Pre-defi

Risks of milk formulas containing peanut oil contaminated with peanut allergens in infants with atopic dermatitis.

Four cases of infants with atopic dermatitis are reported. In all cases, a sensitization to peanut is demonstrated. Any ingestion of peanuts can be excluded, with the exception of a daily consumption of peanut oil, contained in milk formulas. Oral challenges with peanut oil induce a rash, and elimination of these brands is followed by the disappearance of eczematous lesions. The presence of residual allergenic proteins in peanut oil is thus suspected. Owing to the growing incidence of peanut hypersensitivity, the elimination of peanut oil from all milk formulas, food for babies, and ointments,

Partially Hydrolyzed Whey Infant Formula: Literature Review on Effects on Growth and the Risk of Developing Atopic Dermatitis in Infants from the General Population.

Limited evidence is available regarding the effect of partially hydrolyzed whey-based formula (pHF-W) on growth and atopic dermatitis (AD) risk reduction in infants within the general infant population, and without a familial history of allergy as an inclusion or exclusion criterion. We reviewed the current evidence available from studies using pHF-W in the general population and summarized the data on safety (growth) and efficacy outcomes (reduction of AD), comparing the studies side by side. A total of 8 clinical trials were identified from the literature search, 7 of which used the same pHF

Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 2, Regulatory and Safety Considerations.

Operation Stork Speed was launched to modernize infant formula oversight after 2022 shortages and other evidence of supply chain and safety issues. Current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) processes to regulate formulas are at times slow and complex, making it difficult for new formulas to enter the market. One key pathway to adding bioactive substances or other compounds to infant formula is via the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) route. GRAS and food additive pathways require safety data, but food additive petitions require more safety information and cannot be marketed until FDA appro

Occurrence of 2- and 3-monochloropropanediol esters (MCPDE) in infant formula products on the Canadian market between 2015 and 2019.

2- and 3-monochloropropanediol esters (MCPDEs) are most commonly formed as process-induced contaminants during the refinement of vegetable oils used for food production. 'In vivo' hydrolysis of 3-MCPDEs releases the potential carcinogen 3-monochloropropanediol (3-MCPD). Levels of MCPDEs in infant formula are of particular concern, as refined oils are commonly used as main fat ingredients. For this study, infant formula samples (powders, liquid concentrates and ready-to-feed infant formula samples) from the Canadian market were purchased and analysed in 2015 (35 samples) and 2019 (33 samples).
