Patient choice, Internet based information sources, and perceptions of health care: Evidence from Sweden using survey data from 2010 and 2013.

BACKGROUND: Several countries have increased patients' abilities to choose their health care providers, frequently under the assumption that patients are themselves the best agents to make such decisions. In parallel, national and regional health authorities have enhanced access to Internet based information sources (IBIS) to assist patients in making an informed choice. Relatively little, however, is known about the effect that the use of such sources has on key outcomes, including patients' perceptions of care. The aim of this study is to analyze the role of the Internet for patients' confid

Explanatory factors of polydrug use in mid-late teens and the relevance of information sources: Correlational and configurational assessment in Tarragona (Spain).

BACKGROUND: Substance use among adolescents is a public health problem, and the simultaneous use of multiple substances aggravates this problem. Although the facilitators of specific substance use in adolescents have been widely investigated, polydrug use is a less common topic. Likewise, the role that the origin of the information available to adolescents regarding substance use plays in relation to polydrug use is practically unexplored. OBJECTIVES: This work analyzed the relevance of the origin of the information sources available to adolescents regarding substance use, among which we dist

COVID-19 Information Sources and Vaccination Status Among Californian Adults by Generation Using the 2022 California Health Interview Survey: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: As communication technology advances and the digital divide grows, a deeper understanding of the influence of different information sources on vaccine uptake by generations can inform targeted public health interventions in times of future crisis. While the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the role of media sources on the decision to receive vaccines, no studies have focused on the impact of the type and number of information sources in a population-based sample in California. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined associations between Californians' self-reported most relied upon COVI

Have you done your research? Information sources and trust as predictors of vaccine intentions and uptake during Australia's COVID-19 vaccination rollout.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic generated a global "infodemic" of misinformation, shaping public perceptions, trust, and vaccine hesitancy. Although COVID-19 vaccination campaigns have concluded, understanding how people used and trusted information sources during the rollout remains relevant to improving future public health communication. OBJECTIVE: This study examined (1) associations between information sources and COVID-19 vaccination intentions and uptake in Australia, (2) the role of trust in these sources, and (3) discrepancies between source use and trust. METHOD: A longitudinal s

Sources of Information and Health Care Experiences Related to COVID-19 among Women Involved in Criminal Legal System in Three U.S. Cities.

Women in the United States criminal legal (CL) system are at the nexus of several drivers of the COVID-19 pandemic, including incarceration, poverty, chronic illness and racism. There are 1.25 million women incarcerated or on community supervision (probation or parole) in the U.S. We present findings regarding the impact of COVID-19 on women in the CL system (N=344) during the early days of the pandemic. Participants were drawn from community settings in an ongoing study of cervical cancer risk in three U.S. cities: Birmingham, Alabama, Oakland, California and Kansas City, which straddles the

YouTube as a Source of Information for Food, Diet-Related Items, and Advisory Comments for the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often use the Internet to seek information beyond that received from healthcare professionals. This study assessed the perceptions of YouTube presenters on the role of diet in the management of IBD. METHODS: Videos discussing dietary aspects (food, diet-related items, and advisory comments [FODRIACs]) in the management of IBD were included. The perceptions of presenters toward each FODRIAC were labeled as positive, negative, or neutral/intermediate, and FODRIACs were classified according to their underlying role in the management of I

Quality Assessment of TikTok as a Source of Information About Mitral Valve Regurgitation in China: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: In China, mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is the most common cardiovascular valve disease. However, patients in China typically experience a high incidence of this condition, coupled with a low level of health knowledge and a relatively low rate of surgical treatment. TikTok hosts a vast amount of content related to diseases and health knowledge, providing viewers with access to relevant information. However, there has been no investigation or evaluation of the quality of videos specifically addressing MR. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the quality of videos about MR on TikT

Multimodal, open-source big data analysis in asthma: A novel approach to inform public health programming.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease affecting over 358 million people worldwide; for this reason analysing big data on asthma from different countries could give a more detailed picture of current disease burden. We aim to investigate the correlations between asthma and key socio-demographic parameters from different world databases. We found a direct correlation with the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and its nominal counterpart, with wealthiest countries seen to have the highest prevalence of asthma, as also confirmed by a similar correlation with the human development index (HD

Evaluating online nutrition information: a scoping review of young adults' source preferences and criteria for credibility and trustworthiness.

INTRODUCTION: The use of the internet to search for different kinds of information has become part of everyday life also for nutrition information. Therefore, it is important that the information is evidence-based, credible, and trustworthy. Assessing this is complicated by the declining importance of traditional health information gatekeepers and the rapid flow of information. This scoping review examines factors that influence the trustworthiness and credibility of digital information sources on healthy diets from the perspective of young adults. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review with

YouTube as a Source of Information for Dietary Guidance and Advisory Content in the Management of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Background/Objectives: Fatty liver disease (FLD), particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a growing global health concern that underscores the need for effective dietary management strategies. With over 25% of patients seeking dietary advice through platforms like YouTube, the quality and reliability of this information remain critical. However, the disparity in educational value and engagement metrics between professional and non-professional content remains underexplored. This study evaluates YouTube's role in disseminating dietary advice for FLD management, focusing on co

Survey on the use of the Internet as a source of oral health information among dental patients in Bangalore City, India.

PURPOSE: Widespread internet usage worldwide allows increased access to medical and dental information and can be used for patient self-education. Ignorance is not bliss: the impact of sources of information on HPV vaccination knowledge, attitudes, and intentions among unvaccinated young adults in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer worldwide. Despite inclusion in Israel’s national immunization program, HPV vaccine uptake among young adults remains suboptimal. Understanding how information sources influence HPV vaccination knowledge, attitudes, and intentions may aid the design of effective public health interventions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study (December 2023-February 2024) surveyed unvaccinated Israeli adults (18–26) to assess HPV vaccine knowledge, attitudes, intentions, and self-reported sources of HPV vaccine information.
