Depression, anxiety, and drug usage history indicators among institutionalized juvenile offenders of Brasilia.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most serious socio-educational measures for children and adolescents in conflict with the law in Brazil is their internment. This measure may represent an additional source of stress to this population and present significant impacts in the mental health context. This study aims to describe anxiety levels, depression, and addictive consumption, as well as to estimate the causalities and interactions of these variables. METHODS: Herein, we report a study in which 175 male juveniles from youth detention institutions of the Federal District voluntarily completed the Beck

Prior nonhip limb fracture predicts subsequent hip fracture in institutionalized elderly people.

SUMMARY: This 1-year cohort study of nursing home residents revealed that historical fractures of upper limbs or nonhip lower limbs were associated with hip fracture (hazard ratio = 2.14), independent of activities of daily living (ADL), mobility, dementia, weight, and type of nursing home. Prior nonhip fractures are useful for predicting of hip fracture in institutional settings. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of fracture history for the prediction of hip fracture in nursing home residents. METHODS: This was a cohort study with a 1-year follow-up. Subjects w

Institutionalized disadvantage: older Ghanaian nurses' and midwives' reflections on career progression and stagnation in the NHS.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the perceptions of career progression in the NHS of a group of midwives and nurses trained in Ghana and working in the UK. It draws on semi-structured interviews with nurses, midwives and managers which were conducted as part of the Researching Equal Opportunities for Overseas trained Health Professionals project (REOH). BACKGROUND: Research into overseas nurses in the UK has tended to focus on their experiences of discrimination in relationships with colleagues, managers and patients. There is limited statistical evidence indicating that migrant nurse

OBJECTIVES: To test whether the addition of melatonin to bright-light therapy enhances the efficacy in treating rest-activity (circadian) disruption in institutionalized patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). DESIGN: Randomized, controlled trial. SETTING: Two nursing homes in San Francisco, California. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty subjects (mean age 86) with AD. INTERVENTION: Experimental subjects received 1 hour of morning light exposure (> or = 2,500 lux in gaze direction) Monday to Friday for 10 weeks and 5 mg melatonin (LM, n=16) or placebo (LP, n=17) in the evening. [Clinical epidemiological research on the evolution of rubella cases recorded in some collectives of institutionalized children].

Authors present the results of a retroprospective study to assess the number of rubella cases recorded in medical social assistance units for children, in two districts of Moldavia, Romania, between 1993-2003. The age distribution highlighted a predominance of 11-19 age groups in Botoşani and 5-14 in Iaşi; and sex distribution, a predominance in females, but with no significant difference. The rubella epidemic peak of year 2003 was observed in both districts. The necessity of Immunization National Program spreading for rubella and rubella congenital syndrome prevention is a reality, taking int

Behaviors mimicking seizures in institutionalized individuals with multiple disabilities and epilepsy: a video-EEG study.

We reviewed 824 video-EEG telemetry requests of institutionalized patients with epilepsy, searching for evaluations of "new seizure types" identified by staff (caregivers, teachers, therapists, LPNs, RNs). Of the 63 newly identified "seizure types," epilepsy was confirmed in 4 (6.3%); 59 represented nonepileptic events. Causes for diagnostic confusion in the profoundly retarded included stereotypic repeated blinking, swallowing, buccolingual movements, spontaneous grimacing, periods of apparent psychomotor arrest and increased muscle tone, dystonic posturing, and irascible personality emerging

Isokinetic leg strength of institutionalized older adults with mental retardation with and without Down's syndrome.

This study compared isokinetic leg strength of aged individuals with mental retardation (MR) with and without Down's syndrome (DS). Nine subjects with MR and DS (mean age = 61) and 16 subjects with MR but without DS (mean age = 63) performed a leg strength test on a Biodex dynamometer. Parameters measured were peak torque, peak torque percent body weight (ratio displayed as a percentage of the maximum torque production to the subject's body weight), and average power percent body weight. In addition, anthropometric measurements (height, weight, skinfolds, and body mass index) and intelligence

Angelman syndrome methylation screening of 15q11-q13 in institutionalized individuals with severe mental retardation.

Among several genetic diseases that comprise mental retardation, Angelman syndrome (AS) has been extensively recognized and investigated. In the general population, the syndrome occurs in about 1 in 20,000 live births and its prevalence in severely mentally retarded individuals is 1.4%. These figures, however, may be an underestimate, because of the variable phenotype of AS. The main objective of this work was to investigate AS patients among a group of mentally retarded subjects, using the methylation pattern of the SNRPN gene, as determined by Southern blotting molecular analysis. The molecu

Hypercalciuria in chronically institutionalized bedridden children: frequency, predictive factors and response to treatment with thiazides.

Calcium and creatinine concentrations were analyzed in urine samples of 42 chronically institutionalized bedridden children, with neurologic disorders. Their ages ranged from 2 to 16 (mean 8.7) years. Hypercalciuria, defined as UCa/UCr ratio greater than 0.21, was recognized in 18 children (42.8%), the mean UCa/UCr ratio of this group was 0.40 +/- 0.18. Twenty-four children were normocalciuric, with a mean UCa/UCr ratio of 0.08 +/- 0.03. There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to age, sex, length of institutionalization, the basic neurologic disorder, diet, ant

Institutionalization in the elderly: the role of chronic diseases and dementia. Cross-sectional and longitudinal data from a population-based study.

A population-based study of 1810 persons, aged 75+, was investigated to evaluate the role of dementia and other chronic diseases as determinants of institutionalization in the elderly. The study population was examined at baseline and after a 3-year interval. After adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, functional dependence, dementia, cerebrovascular disease and hip fracture were associated with living in an institution at baseline. Additionally, functional dependence, hip fracture and dementia were also associated with moving to an institution during the 3-year follow-up. In a simi

Psychological well-being among institutionalized older adults: The roles of mattering, alexithymia, and spirituality.

BACKGROUND: Institutionalized older adults often face emotional challenges, including a diminished sense of mattering and difficulties in identifying or expressing emotions (alexithymia), both of which can negatively affect their psychological well-being. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate the relationships among loss of mattering, alexithymia, spirituality, and psychological well-being among institutionalized older adults and to examine the mediating role of spirituality in these relationships. METHODS: A quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study design was utilized. The st

Effects of Dual-Task Resistance Training and Detraining on Immunometabolic Markers in Institutionalized Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week dual-task resistance training (RT) program on inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers in institutionalized older adults and assess the impact of detraining. METHODS: The study followed a crossover experimental design. Participants were 11 older adults (mean age: 81.9 ± 3.0 years), who completed baseline (week 1), post-control (weeks 14-15), post-training (week 28), and post-detraining (week 42) assessments over 42 weeks.
