Health issues and quality of life in women with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Although there is anecdotal evidence of an increase in both period pain and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in women with intellectual disabilities (ID), there are only brief mentions of it in the literature. METHOD: Questionnaires were distributed to parents of women with Down syndrome (DS) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), resulting in 24 respondents from Australia and New Zealand. The purpose of the study was to ascertain how period pain and PMS presents in women with ID. RESULTS: Results were analyzed by disability group, and communication ability. Women with DS were more often

An epidemiological and aetiological study of children with intellectual disability in Taiwan.

A large-scale cytogenetic study of the causes of intellectual disability (ID) in children from special schools and institutions was made in Taiwan between 1991 and 1996. The screening methods and the identification of subjects with ID consisted of both clinical evaluation (i.e. photographs, questionnaires on family, pre-, peri- and postnatal history, and hospital records, including IQ) and further laboratory studies for diagnosis (i.e. standard chromosome analysis, and if indicated, high-resolution banding, cytogenetic fragile-X study or molecular techniques). A total of 11,892 patients were e

Intellectual disabilities and power spectra analysis during sleep: a new perspective on borderline intellectual functioning.

BACKGROUND: The role of sleep in cognitive processes has been confirmed by a growing number of reports for all ages of life. Analysing sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) spectra may be useful to study cortical organisation in individuals with Borderline Intellectual Functioning (BIF), as seen in other disturbances even if it is not considered a disease. The aim of this study was to determine if the sleep EEG power spectra in children with BIF could be different from typically developing children. METHODS: Eighteen BIF (12 males) (mean age 11.04; SD ± 1.07) and 24 typical developing children (14

Comparison of burden among primary care-givers of children with autism and intellectual disability against children with intellectual disability only in a hospital population in India.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the burden among the primary caregivers (PCG) of children with autism and intellectual disability (ASD + ID) against intellectual disability (ID) only, and identify the factors that predict high caregiver burden. METHODS: Children with either ASD + ID (N = 41) or ID (N = 56) and their PCG were recruited and assessed using the Family Burden Interview Schedule, Binet Kamat Scale of Intelligence or Gesell's Developmental Schedule and Vineland Social Maturity Scale, Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Sensory Profile and Brief Autism Mealtime Behavior Inventory after collecting t

Predicting disabilities in daily functioning in older people with intellectual disabilities using a frailty index.

Frailty is a state of increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes compared to others of the same age. People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are more frequently and earlier frail compared to the general population. Frailty challenges much of health care, which will likely further increase due to the aging of the population. Before effective interventions can start, more information is necessary about the consequences of frailty in this, already disabled, population. Here we report whether frailty predicts disabilities in daily functioning. Frailty was measured with a frailty index (

The impact of sexual abuse on body experience in adults with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning.

BACKGROUND: Research is lacking on body-related consequences of sexual abuse in adults with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning (MID-BIF), although the prevalence of abuse is high and body- and movement-oriented diagnostics and therapeutics seem warranted for this group. METHOD: Body experience in adults with MID-BIF who were sexually abused (SA) and were not sexually abused (NSA) was compared using a self-report instrument, the Body Experience Questionnaire-mb, and an instrument to observe non-verbal psychomotor behaviour, the PsyMot-mb. RESULTS: The SA group

Evaluating a toolkit for end-of-life care planning with people with intellectual disabilities: An exploration of implementation outcomes within intellectual disability social care services.

This study used qualitative surveys and focus groups to evaluate the implementation of an end-of-life care planning toolkit within intellectual disability social care services, by exploring whether it is beneficial and workable in this setting. Participants were staff trialling the toolkit and submitting feedback forms. Focus groups with support staff and service managers were also conducted. Feedback forms and focus group transcripts were coded using a modified framework approach. Data and analyses were discussed within the team (including researchers with intellectual disabilities). Differences in visuospatial processing in individuals with nonverbal learning disability or autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability.

OBJECTIVE: Although previous reports produced converging empirical evidence of a core deficit on visuospatial processing in children with a nonverbal learning disability (NLD), few studies compared the visuospatial profile of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or NLD in visuoconstructive and visuospatial working memory tasks. Nor did any of these studies investigate the role of the local bias, typically observed in ASD, when comparing these clinical groups. The present study aimed to analyze whether NLD and ASD share any characteristics. METHOD: A group of participants with NL

A Homozygous CPSF1 Variant Causes Congenital Cataract, Intellectual Disability and Hyperphagia.

The cleavage and polyadenylation specific factor 1 (CPSF1) gene encodes a subunit of the cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor (CPSF), a multi-protein complex essential for mRNA 3' end processing. The role of CPSF1 in retinal function and eye development has been demonstrated using zebrafish models and heterozygous variants in CPSF1 have been reported in early-onset high myopia (MIM: 618827). Here, we present a patient with bilateral congenital cataracts and intellectual disability with a novel homozygous missense variant (c.3817G>C; p.Asp1273His) in CPSF1. This amino acid change is

Heart Transplant for Noncompaction Cardiomyopathy in NONO-Related Syndromic Intellectual Disability.

INTRODUCTION: Loss-of-function variants in NONO cause an X-linked syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder (MRXS34), characterized by developmental delay, corpus callosum abnormalities, dysmorphic features, feeding difficulties, and congenital heart disease, most commonly left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy (LVNC). Long-term outcome data remain limited. METHODS: A 14-year-old boy with LVNC and syndromic neurodevelopmental features underwent exome sequencing and subsequently NONO transcript analysis. A literature search was conducted using the terms "NONO variant" and "NONO mutation".

[Emotional development in individuals with intellectual disability: clinical and therapeutic perspectives].

BACKGROUND: Individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) show not only cognitive but also emotional developmental delays, which can be associated with challenging behavior, unnecessary psychopharmacological treatment and restricted participation. The emotional development approach provides a framework for understanding behavior associated with a certain developmental level, differentiating it from mental disorders and making it usable for diagnostics, treatment and support. AIM: The objective is to present the theoretical foundations, diagnostics and clinical relevance of emotional develop

Assessing sign language comprehension in adults with intellectual disability and deafness.

Language comprehension is an essential component of human development that is associated not only with expressive language development and knowledge acquisition, but also with social inclusion, mental health, and quality of life. For deaf and hard-of-hearing adults with intellectual disability, there is a paucity of measures of receptive sign language skills, although these are a prerequisite for individualized planning and evaluation of intervention. Assessments require materials and procedures that are accurate, feasible, and suitable for low levels of functioning. We adapted measures of Eng

Development of early numeracy skills in children with moderate intellectual disability.

This study assessed the effectiveness of a program aimed at improving the early numeracy skills of students with moderate intellectual disability. The persistence of the acquired skills and the program's impact on learning were monitored. Feedback from the students and their mothers was also gathered. Using a multiple-probe design across subjects, the results were visually presented through graphical analysis. Three male students aged 8-9 years participated. After obtaining high-reliability findings from reliability analyses, results showed the program effectively increased students' number sk

Rest-Activity Rhythm Phenotypes in Adults with Epilepsy and Intellectual Disability.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep and rest-activity rhythms (RARs) are perturbed in many forms of neuropsychiatric illness. In this study, we applied wrist actigraphy to describe the extent of RAR perturbations in adults with epilepsy and intellectual disability ("E+ID"), using a cross-sectional case-control design. We examined whether RAR phenotypes correlated with epilepsy severity, deficits in adaptive function and/or comorbid psychopathology. METHODS: Primary caregivers of E+ID adults provided informed consent during routine ambulatory clinic visits and were asked to complete standardized surveys of overa

Scoping review of dual-task interference in individuals with intellectual disability.

Dual-task paradigms can provide insights on the structures and mechanisms underlying information processing and hold diagnostic, prognostic, and rehabilitative value for populations with cognitive deficits such as in individuals with intellectual disability (ID). In this paradigm, two tasks are performed separately (single-task context) and concurrently (dual-task context). The change in performance from single- to dual-task context represents dual-task interference. Findings from dual-task studies have been largely inconsistent on whether individuals with ID present with dual-task-specific de

Cation leak through the ATP1A3 pump causes spasticity and intellectual disability.

ATP1A3 encodes the α3 subunit of the sodium-potassium ATPase, one of two isoforms responsible for powering electrochemical gradients in neurons. Heterozygous pathogenic ATP1A3 variants produce several distinct neurological syndromes, yet the molecular basis for phenotypic variability is unclear. We report a novel recurrent variant, ATP1A3(NM_152296.5):c.2324C>T; p.(Pro775Leu), in nine individuals associated with the primary clinical features of progressive or non-progressive spasticity and developmental delay/intellectual disability. No patients fulfil diagnostic criteria for ATP1A3-associated
