"Embodying opposites"-A case illustration of Dance Movement Therapy as an additional intervention in the treatment of co-morbid Borderline Personality Disorder and Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Dance Movement Therapy is gradually becoming recognized as a treatment option in Mental Health Care. However, the working mechanisms can be difficult to comprehend without experiential knowledge of this therapy form. This article aims to offer insight into the clinical application of Dance Movement Therapy for Sanne, a woman with a history of interpersonal relationship difficulties, problems with self-regulation, low self-efficacy and diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and co-morbid Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This case illustration describes treatment interventions dur

Emotional and cardiovascular reactivity to a child-focused interpersonal stressor among depressed mothers of psychiatrically ill children.

BACKGROUND: Impairment in maternal interpersonal function represents a risk factor for poor psychiatric outcomes among children of depressed mothers. However, the mechanisms by which this effect occurs have yet to be fully elucidated. Elevated levels of emotional or physiological reactivity to interpersonal stress may impact depressed mothers' ability to effectively negotiate child-focused conflicts. This effect may become particularly pronounced when depressed mothers are parenting a psychiatrically ill child. METHODS: The current feasibility study evaluated mothers' emotional and cardiovasc

Depression and psychological trauma: an overview integrating current research and specific evidence of studies in the treatment of depression in public mental health services in chile.

In the last two decades, different research has demonstrated the high prevalence of childhood trauma, including sexual abuse, among depressive women. These findings are associated with a complex, severe, and chronic psychopathology. This can be explained considering the neurobiological changes secondary to early trauma that can provoke a neuroendocrine failure to compensate in response to challenge. It suggests the existence of a distinguishable clinical-neurobiological subtype of depression as a function of childhood trauma that requires specific treatments. Among women with depression and ea

Counselling and depressive symptoms in older adults with HIV/AIDS in mbarara, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent low mood, loss of interest, hopelessness, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and low self-esteem. Among people living with HIV (PLWH), depression is linked to poor psychological and medical outcomes, including lower quality of life, higher viral load, and increased mortality risk. Various psychotherapy methods, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy, group counselling, and rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), have been used to treat depression. Counselling, an interpersonal pr

Psychological impact of premature ejaculation and barriers to its recognition and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common male sexual dysfunction, occurring in 20-30% of men. Unlike erectile dysfunction, which increases with age, rates of PE remain constant across the adult life span. OBJECTIVE: To review the prevalence of PE, its psychological sequelae and barriers to effective treatment, treatment options, and the effects of treatment on the psychological burden of PE. METHODS: PubMed and Embase databases were searched to identify primary papers related to PE published between 1980 and 2010. Key words included premature ejaculation, prevalence, quality

Psychological treatments of binge eating disorder.

CONTEXT: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is an effective specialty treatment for binge eating disorder (BED). Behavioral weight loss treatment (BWL) and guided self-help based on cognitive behavior therapy (CBTgsh) have both resulted in short-term reductions in binge eating in obese patients with BED. OBJECTIVE: To test whether patients with BED require specialty therapy beyond BWL and whether IPT is more effective than either BWL or CBTgsh in patients with a high negative affect during a 2-year follow-up. DESIGN: Randomized, active control efficacy trial. SETTING: University outpatient c

Novel Psychological Interventions in the Treatment of Unipolar Major Depression.

The clinimetric method of staging defines the extent of progression of unipolar major depression along the continuum of the course of the illness from prodromal to residual phases. This longitudinal view allows clinicians to select stage-specific treatment options. A growing body of literature suggests that no single psychotherapy approach is effective for all patients and clinical situations and that patients with unipolar major depression prefer psychotherapy to antidepressants, also due to the iatrogenic potential of the latter. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy was found to be effective in all

The treatment of depressive disorders in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders are among the more common mental illnesses around the world. About 3% of prepubertal children and 6% of postpubertal children and adolescents are affected. Many physicians are unsure about which treatment approaches are effective and how the treatment should be planned. METHOD: A systematic literature search was carried out in electronic databases and study registries and as a manual search. More than 450 studies (mostly randomized controlled trials [RCTs]) were identified and summarized in five evidence tables. The ensuing recommendations were agreed upon in

The power of the group: How neuroscience supports expanding the therapeutic dyad through group psychotherapy.

Group psychotherapy represents a therapeutic modality that provides unique affordances for patients, allowing layers of engagement by the patient in the psychotherapeutic process that are not available in dyadic psychotherapeutic treatment. This article considers psychodynamic group psychotherapy through the lens of current neuroscientific concepts. In doing so, we offer a framework for clinicians to consider how beliefs and habits that are originally adaptive become maladaptive and persist, and why patients hold on to maladaptive beliefs about the world and their own agency that are not refle

When Addressing Trauma Makes a Difference: A Case Report of Undiagnosed Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) is an emergent diagnosis, which acknowledges the impact of prolonged interpersonal abuse on affect regulation, interpersonal functioning, and self-concept. We present the case of a 59-year-old woman who remained undiagnosed and untreated for this condition for three decades while under follow-up in mental health services for the diagnosis of personality disorder and bipolar disorder. The patient suffered repeated sexual abuse in her childhood, resulting in intrusive traumatic memories she emotionally and cognitively avoided, dissociative amnesia,

Managing Dissociation and Somatic Symptoms in Complex PTSD Using a Structural Dissociation-informed Approach: A Case Report.

Chronic interpersonal trauma can lead to complex clinical presentations characterized by dissociation, somatic symptoms, and disturbances in self-organization, particularly when psychosocial stressors remain active. This case report describes a 32-year-old female with prolonged interpersonal trauma who presented with dissociative episodes, somatic symptoms including fainting and jaw locking, recurrent suicidal ideation, and significant functional impairment. Symptoms intensified amid ongoing interpersonal conflict and financial stress.  Assessment findings supported a diagnosis of complex post

Domain-specific social functioning improvements during treatment of depressed women with histories of childhood sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Deterioration in social functioning and depression are often intertwined, particularly for women with histories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Among women with CSA histories, some relationship domains may be more modifiable than others during time-limited depression treatment. Women with CSA histories often report long-standing interpersonal difficulties in close relationships. Thus, we expected that patients' relationships with immediate family and intimate partners would be less likely to improve during treatment than relationships with co-workers, friends, or extended family,

Impact of Baseline Characteristics on the Effectiveness of Disorder-Specific Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) and Supportive Psychotherapy in Outpatient Treatment for Persistent Depressive Disorder.

Importance: In the treatment of persistent depressive disorder (PDD), disorder-specific Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) has been shown to be superior to Supportive Psychotherapy (SP) in outpatients. It remains to clear which subgroups of patients benefit equally and differentially from both psychotherapies. Objective: To identify those patient-level baseline characteristics that predict a comparable treatment effectiveness of CBASP and SP and those that moderate the differential effectiveness of CBASP compared to SP. Client experience of psychodynamic psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa: an interview study.

We examined 14 bulimic clients' experiences of individual psychodynamic psychotherapy through semistructured interviews, which were analyzed using qualitative methods. The results showed that the psychodynamic approach was a challenge to most of the clients. Yet, most clients profited from therapy both symptomatically and with regard to interpersonal relations and affect regulation. There were, however, marked differences in the clients' experiences. One subgroup rather quickly felt that the therapy met their needs, another initially felt challenged by the approach and the therapeutic attitude

The stiff man syndrome: a psychiatric disease?

Although the Stiff Man Syndrome has been traditionally viewed as a neurologic disorder, a number of recent articles have documented a pattern of familial, interpersonal, and intrapsychic stress which suggests that this disease may be, to a considerable degree, psychosomatic in origin. The present paper reviews several recent articles and focuses on a single case study. Although the medical diagnosis was earlier confirmed, an in-depth psychiatric evaluation and extensive psychological assessment showed many psychopathological concomitants associated with the severe muscle spasm and stiffness. Therapists' perspectives on optimal treatment for pathological narcissism.

This study used Q methodology to explore clinicians' perspectives regarding optimal psychotherapy process in the treatment of pathological narcissism, a syndrome of impaired self-regulation. Participants were 34 psychotherapists of various disciplines and theoretical orientations who reviewed 3 clinical vignettes portraying hypothetical cases of grandiose narcissism, vulnerable narcissism, and panic disorder without pathological narcissism. Participants then used the Psychotherapy Process Q set, a 100-item Q-sort instrument, to indicate their views regarding optimal therapy process for each hy

Non-Pharmacological Interventions for Managing the Symptoms of Depression in Women with Breast Cancer: A Literature Review of Clinical Trials.

Symptoms of depression represent a significant burden to patients with breast cancer, not only because of the psychological stress associated with their diagnosis, but also because of the adverse effects of its treatment. We reviewed the clinical trials examining the management of the symptoms of depression in breast cancer patients through different non-pharmacological interventions in different databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the American Psychological Association). Cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy or psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as acceptance and com

Integrating personality functioning in brief psychotherapy for substance use disorders: a case study.

A large treatment gap exists for substance use disorders (SUDs) in India. Among other factors, personality vulnerabilities are widely implicated in the initiation and maintenance of SUDs leading to poor outcomes. Available brief interventions do not adequately address this. Longer term therapies are resource intensive and therefore difficult to incorporate in tertiary care settings due to poor treatment provider-patient ratio. Further, trait-based and categorical models have limited application in brief psychotherapies. Core pathology seen across personality disorders such as the impairments i

A protocol for MIndfulness-based Neurofeedback to augment DBT psychotherapy for adults with Borderline Personality Disorder (MIND-BPD).

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric condition associated with high rates of suicide and poor interpersonal functioning. There are no FDA-approved medications, and evidence-based psychotherapies such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) are difficult to access and vulnerable to patient dropout. Novel treatment directions are urgently needed. Mindfulness is the core skill in DBT. Our team has developed a mindfulness-based real-time neurofeedback (mbNF) paradigm where individuals learn to reduce default mode network (DMN) versus control network activation in order to in
