No hay paso: barriers to nature access faced by Mexicans in southern Arizona.

INTRODUCTION: Mexican immigrants and other low-income populations in the United States face reduced access to natural environments, limiting their opportunities both to secure a wide range of associated health advantages and to participate fully in environmental stewardship and protection efforts. This ethnographic study was designed to investigate Mexicans' access to and engagement with natural environments over the course of international migration from Mexico to southern Arizona to help fill important gaps in our understanding of the intersectional nature barriers faced in this population.

Stigma and illness management among podoconiosis patients in rural Ethiopia: an intersectional-hermeneutic study.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis, a neglected tropical skin disease causing lower-limb lymphedema, disproportionately affects rural populations in low-income countries and has profound physical and psychosocial consequences. Despite its significant impact, the interplay between stigma and illness management in podoconiosis remains under-explored. This study examines the lived experiences of stigma and illness management pathways among patients in rural Ethiopia, highlighting the complex social determinants shaping these processes. METHODS: Using an intersectional-hermeneutic framework, we conducted i

Prolactin is an autocrine or paracrine growth factor for human myometrial and leiomyoma cells.

Over the last two decades, immigrant and refugee integration service agencies in Canada have been incorporating a focus on resiliency in their work and hold "fostering resilience" as a primary goal of services. These agencies focus on helping their clients enhance resilience in response to their integration challenges. Refugee and immigrant youth (RIY) face intersectional vulnerabilities during their resettlement process. These challenges make the concept of resilience vital to their success. However, resettlement service providers associate RIY's resilience with their assimilation into the We

The intersections of palliative care and homelessness in social policy: A content analysis of Canadian policy documents.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care for people experiencing homelessness (PEH) is a social issue of increasing importance. Policymakers are best positioned to lead societal responses by naming the issue in policy documents, allocating resources to address palliative care for PEH, and creating frameworks or guiding principles to inform action. This study aims to examine how, if at all, policymakers in Canada are identifying and addressing the issue of palliative care for diverse PEH in policies and frameworks governing the palliative care and/or homelessness sectors. METHODS: We conducted a content an

Integrating multi-omics and machine learning to decipher the molecular pathways of bisphenol a-associated lactylation-related genes driving bladder cancer.

In this study, we systematically investigated bladder cancer-related gene signatures using a toxicogenomics-informed framework, with particular attention to genes associated with lactylation-related pathways. Multi-omics data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were integrated, and Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA), a toxicology database, and lactylation-related gene sets were combined for intersection screening. Machine learning algorithms, including LASSO, SVM, and random forest, were then applied to identify key genes. Four prioritize

Weakly Supervised Breast Ultrasound Image Segmentation Based on Image Selection.

Automatic segmentation in Breast Ultrasound (BUS) imaging is vital to BUS computer-aided diagnostic systems. Fully supervised learning approaches can attain high accuracy, yet they depend on pixel-level annotations that are challenging to obtain. As an alternative, weakly supervised learning methods offer a way to lessen the dependency on extensive annotation requirements. Existing weakly supervised learning methods are typically trained on the entire dataset, but not all samples are effective in training a robust image segmentation model. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a new we

The association between gender roles and smoking initiation among women and adolescent girls.

Smoking cigarettes is a leading global cause of preventable death and disease. Men historically smoke more than women, but the prevalence of smoking among women in low and middle-income countries is increasing at an alarming rate. Understanding the factors that influence smoking initiation among women and girls is needed to address the growing epidemic of women smokers and the looming impact on women's health worldwide. We assume that smoking initiation is embedded in socio-culturally influenced gendered context and use a social cognitive model with a gendered lens as a framework for organizin

Associations between gendered racism, racial identity, and nicotine use among Asian American men.

OBJECTIVES: The present study utilized an intersectional framework to examine if two forms of gendered racism, psychological emasculation and messages about Asian American men being undesirable partners, were associated with Asian American men's nicotine use. We also examined the potential mediating roles of two racial identity statuses, racial conformity and racial immersion. METHODS: A sample of 356 Asian American men living in the United States of America (USA) completed a cross-sectional survey via Qualtrics containing measures assessing the aforementioned constructs of interest. Sexual and Reproductive Justice and Health Equity for LGBTQ+ Women.

LGBTQ+ women have long been overlooked in sexual and reproductive health research. However, recent research has established that LGBTQ+ women have unique and specific needs that need to be addressed in order to improve effectiveness of sexual health education and practice with this historically and presently underserved population. Informed by a reproductive justice framework coupled with liberation psychology theory, this review discusses the current state of sexual and reproductive health and technologies among LGBTQ+ women. In particular, we focus on a range of HIV prevention and reproducti

Necropolitics as accumulation: Enforcement and enclosure in Brisbane during COVID-19.

This article explores the uneven impacts that Indigenous and detained migrant populations have endured in Australia in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Australia has one of the most restrictive immigration enforcement systems in the world. Along with imposing practices of mandatory detention in rural and remote regions, the Australian government finances the carceral systems of nearby countries and island nations. These logics of enforcement are embedded within histories and techniques of Indigenous quarantine, incarceration, and colonial erasure. Following Achille Mbembe (2019), I advanc

Rumination & eating psychopathology among trans and nonbinary individuals: A path analysis integrating minority stress.

UNLABELLED: Ruminative thought patterns, defined as repetitive negative self-focused attention, are considered an avoidant coping strategy for managing stress. As trans and nonbinary (TNB) individuals commonly experience prejudice and discrimination in response to their gender identities (i.e. minority stressors), rumination over these stressors may contribute to heightened risk of psychopathology in these groups. Although rumination is a general risk factor for eating disorder (ED) psychopathology, no studies to date have examined whether eating- or gender-related ruminative patterns relate t

#recovery: Understanding recovery from the lens of recovery-focused blogs posted by individuals with lived experience.

OBJECTIVE: Definitions of eating disorder (ED) recovery have primarily focused on symptom management (i.e., weight regain, reduced/absent ED behaviors, and normalized ED thoughts). Notwithstanding the importance of these approaches, there are arguably additional considerations in ED recovery. In order to get a more comprehensive understanding of recovery, it is necessary to turn to individuals with lived experience. Here, we examine how individuals with lived experience of an ED conceptualize and define recovery in narrative, recovery-focused blogs and consider how this understanding may contr

A qualitative study on intersectional stigma and sexual health among women on opioid substitution treatment in England: Implications for research, policy and practice.

RATIONALE: Women on opioid substitution treatment (WOST) are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections and blood-borne viruses (HIV, Hepatitis B and C). This heightened risk is rooted in social and health inequities. Experiencing stigma is considered to have an important role in maintaining these inequities and is a barrier to promoting sexual health. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to examine (1) the experiences of stigma of WOST, and (2) how experiencing stigma may influence WOST' sexual health. METHOD: Twenty semi-structured interviews with WOST were conducted between Octobe

Multifactorial discrimination as a fundamental cause of mental health inequities.

BACKGROUND: The theory of fundamental causes explains why health disparities persist over time, even as risk factors, mechanisms, and diseases change. Using an intersectional framework, we evaluated multifactorial discrimination as a fundamental cause of mental health disparities. METHODS: Using baseline data from the Project STRIDE: Stress, Identity, and Mental Health study, we examined the health effects of discrimination among individuals who self-identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. We used logistic and linear regression to assess whether multifactorial discrimination met the four cri

Why Do You Think You're More Likely to be Queer? Exploring Autistic Perspectives on the Intersection Between Autism and Sexual Minority Identities.

Autistic individuals are more likely to be sexual minorities (e.g., gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual). While several theories have been posited to explain this overlap, the voices of autistic sexual minorities are missing from this conversation. Moreover, there is limited qualitative research exploring the intersection between their dual identities. The co-creation of research by autistic sexual minorities is, therefore, an ethical imperative. This research used semi-structured interviews, facilitated by the shared lived experience of the lead researcher. Fourteen autistic sexual minorities wer

Raja Yoga meditation: A personal spiritual experience and narrative inquiry.

The COVID-19 pandemic catalysed widespread psychological distress, daily disruptions, and pervasive uncertainty. This paper presents a narrative inquiry exploring a personal spiritual journey with Raja Yoga meditation, initiated via an online course during the pandemic lockdown. The account investigates the interconnected roles of spiritual knowledge, meditation practice, and selfless service (Sewa) in enhancing psychological well-being and fostering profound inner transformation. Additionally, a unique subjective experience during a residential spiritual retreat is analysed through both spiri

Structural Competency as a Global Framework for Syndemic HIV Care: A Critical Synthesis.

The co-occurrence of HIV with mental health disorders, substance use, and tuberculosis continues to constitute significant global public health issues. Syndemic theory elucidates how these conditions interact synergistically to exacerbate health outcomes, reduce engagement in care, and hinder adherence to antiretroviral therapy. Structural competency offers a useful framework for conceptualizing and addressing the broader social, economic, and political determinants that influence health outcomes for people living with HIV as well as mental illness, substance use issues, and tuberculosis. Integration of network toxicology, machine learning and single-cell sequencing identifies candidate molecular links between air pollutants and hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies link long-term air pollution to an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the underlying toxicological targets remain poorly understood. We used an integrative computational framework to identify and prioritize candidate molecular mediators potentially linking pollutant-associated gene signatures with hepatocarcinogenesis. METHODS: We retrieved pollutant-responsive genes associated with seven toxicants from the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database and intersected them with HCC-associated genes. We used protein-protein interaction (PPI) network
