Endoscopic Endocautery Polypectomy for the Treatment of Duodenal and Gastric Polyps in a Cat.

Endoscopic polypectomy is commonly performed in human medicine, with large-scale studies reported. However, few reports have described its use in veterinary medicine and, specifically, the procedure in the case of duodenal polyps in cats has not been reported. A 7 kg 14-year-old cat presented with recurrent vomiting for several months. Gastroduodenoscopy revealed a pedunculated polyp at the pyloric antrum and another in the duodenum, with its head protruding into the pylorus. Endoscopic polypectomy was performed using an electrosurgical snare with no recurrence of clinical signs after six mont

Intestinal topical lidocaine spray improves the efficacy and safety of endoscopic sigmoid polypectomy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic polypectomy can prevent colorectal cancer. Adequate surgical field visualization is crucial to complete resection. To prevent visual field loss caused by intestinal peristalsis, we investigated the efficacy and safety of topical lidocaine spraying during the endoscopic sigmoid polypectomy (ESP). METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed on 100 ESP patients admitted from July 2021 to October 2021, among which 50 patients received lidocaine (case group) and other 50 patients received normal saline (control group). Lidocaine or saline was sprayed on the coloni

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: is family screening needed?

In a 7-year-old boy, a small-bowel polyp was found intraoperatively as a lead point of an intussusception. Histologically, a hamartoma was found and the clinical work-up revealed Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS). Additionally, all four asymptomatic siblings showed intestinal polyposis. All children in a family with PJS should be properly investigated. In case of an intussusception with a polyp in a critical location, a surgical procedure should follow.

RBM47 regulates intestinal injury and tumorigenesis by modifying proliferation, oxidative response, and inflammatory pathways.

RNA-binding protein 47 (RBM47) is required for embryonic endoderm development, but a role in adult intestine is unknown. We studied intestine-specific Rbm47-knockout mice (Rbm47-IKO) following intestinal injury and made crosses into ApcMin/+ mice to examine alterations in intestinal proliferation, response to injury, and tumorigenesis. We also interrogated human colorectal polyps and colon carcinoma tissue. Rbm47-IKO mice exhibited increased proliferation and abnormal villus morphology and cellularity, with corresponding changes in Rbm47-IKO organoids. Rbm47-IKO mice adapted to radiation injur

A case of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome associated with high-grade intramucosal neoplasia.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare, inherited autosomal dominant disease characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentation and polyps in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we report the rare case of a 64-year-old female patient with pigmentation on her lips and extremities for over 63 years and intermittent abdominal pain and, diarrhea for 3 years. The presence of intestinal and colorectal hamartomatous polyps was confirmed. The removal and characterization of her rectal polyp showed it to be a typical hamartomatous polyp with a portion of it being an adenoma with high-grade intramucosal neoplasi

Revisiting the Role of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in Gastric Cancer: A Case Study of EBV in Normal, Dysplastic, and Malignant Gastric Epithelium.

Gastric carcinoma represents a significant global health challenge, with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) playing a key role in certain subtypes of the disease. However, the exact mechanisms by which EBV contributes to gastric carcinogenesis remain poorly understood. This case report presents a 78-year-old female patient with a history of chronic atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and multiple hyperplastic gastric polyps, exhibiting both low- and high-grade dysplasia, who ultimately developed multifocal intramucosal adenocarcinoma and underwent subtotal gastrectomy. The gastrectomy specimen re

[Radiological aspect of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: considerations on a case].

The authors present their experience on a case of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Initially described in 1921, the association of intestinal polyposis with pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes has been called the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome; the pigment, which is melanin, usually involves the lips and mouth and at times the face and extremities. The syndrome appears to be a hereditable disease. Polyps may be present in the stomach, small bowel and colon, but are most frequent in the small bowel, where they produce intussusception or bleeding. Our patient, a 35-year-old man, presented abdominal pai

Gastrointestinal diseases and their oro-dental manifestations: Part 4: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare, autosomal dominant inherited disorder, caused by germline mutations in the LKB1 tumour suppressor gene. It is clinically characterised by distinct perioral mucocutaneous pigmentations, gastrointestinal polyposis and an increased cancer risk in adult life. Hamartomatous polyps can develop already in the first decade of life and may cause various complications, including abdominal pain, bleeding, anaemia, and acute intestinal obstruction. Furthermore, patients have an increased risk for developing cancer, both in the gastrointestinal tract as in other orga

Clinics in diagnostic imaging. 159. Jejunal intussusception due to Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

A 21-year-old woman presented with acute onset of upper abdominal pain. A diagnosis of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) was made based on the clinical picture of perioral pigmentation with imaging findings of transient jejunojejunal intussusceptions and small bowel polyps, and confirmed by characteristic histopathological appearances of Peutz-Jeghers polyps. PJS is a rare hereditary condition characterised by unique hamartomatous polyps, perioral mucocutaneous pigmentations, and increased susceptibility to gastrointestinal and extraintestinal neoplasms. Patients usually present with recurrent abdo

Evaluation of non-gastric upper gastrointestinal system polyps: an epidemiological assessment.

Non-gastric upper gastrointestinal system polyps are detected rarely and mostly incidentally during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. While the majority of lesions are asymptomatic and benign, some lesions have the potential to become malignant, and may be associated with other malignancies. Between May 2010 and June 2022, a total of 127,493 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were retrospectively screened. Among these patients, those who had polyps in the esophagus and duodenum and biopsied were included in the study. A total of 248 patients with non-gastric polyps were in

Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba Syndrome in a Patient with a PTEN Mutation Identified by Chromosomal Microarray Analysis: A Case Report.

Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome (BRRS) is one of the phosphatase and tensin homolog hamartoma tumor syndrome with a PTEN gene mutation. It is a rare dominant autosomal disorder characterized by cutaneous lipomas, macrocephaly, intestinal polyps, and developmental delay. Diagnosing this syndrome is important, because it may represent the pediatric phenotype of Cowden syndrome, in which there is an increased risk for malignant tumors in children. Until now, the prevalence of BRRS is unknown. Several dozen cases have been reported in the medical literature, but no case has been reported in Kore

Adult with intestinal malrotation and colocolic intussusception: an unusual combo.

Intestinal malrotation is a congenital anomaly that results from an abnormality in the rotation and fixation of the gut as it returns to the abdominal cavity during development. Intussusception is a condition characterised by telescoping of one segment of the bowel into another segment. The combination of malrotation and intussusception is frequently a cause of intestinal obstruction in the paediatric age group. The coexistence of these two conditions is termed as Waugh syndrome and is uncommon in adults. We share our experience with an elderly woman who was admitted with diarrhoea and anaemia

Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia with a lipomatous component associated with fecal compaction in an appendiceal orifice.

A 69-year-old man underwent endoscopic mucosal resection of a solitary polyp located in the cecum. After the procedure, a fecal mass and appendiceal orifice appeared under the cut surface. A diagnosis of reactive lymphoid hyperplasia was made based on the results of an immunostaining analysis, which revealed a segregated population of T cells and B cells in multiple lymphoid follicles. The aggregation of adipocytes forming a lipomatous area and granulation tissue was also observed. We speculate that the compaction of the fecal mass in the appendix triggered mucosal inflammation, resulting in t

[Rectorrhagia caused by lipoma of the hepatic flexure of the colon. A case report and review of the literature].

The Authors report a case of intestinal bleeding due to lipoma of the epatic flexure. Lipomas are the commonest mesenchymal benign tumors that can be found in the colon and are second as frequence only to the adenomatous polyps. They are most frequent in the right colon and shown an opposite distribution in comparison with adenocarcinomas and adenomatous polyps. When tumor size is greater than 3 cm, lipomas become symptomatic. Radiological and endoscopic investigations provide orientative elements for diagnosis. In lipomas less than 2 cm in diameter an endoscopic treatment is feasible.

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the ileum causing recurrent intussusception and chronic ischaemia: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory fibroid polyp is a rare condition of the gastrointestinal tract which can lead to intestinal obstruction. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 65-year-old woman presenting with a 1-month history of intermittent generalised abdominal pain. Computerised tomography imaging demonstrated intussusception of the small bowel. Histology of the resected small bowel revealed an inflammatory fibroid polyp with evidence of chronic ischaemia related to repeated intussusception. This rare complication of inflammatory fibroid polyps is reviewed. CONCLUSION: Although computed

Endometrial intestinal metaplasia: a report of two cases, including one associated with cervical intestinal and pyloric metaplasia.

Intestinal metaplasia of the endometrium is extremely uncommon with only a single earlier case report. We describe 2 cases of endometrial intestinal metaplasia, one of them involving an endometrial polyp, characterized by the presence of intestinal-type epithelium containing goblet and neuroendocrine cells, which were positive with CK20, CDX2, chromogranin, and villin. In 1 case, there was concomitant intestinal and pyloric metaplasia in the endocervix. Together with the observation of the earlier reported case of endometrial intestinal metaplasia, there was also intestinal metaplasia in the c
