Iron overload is known to exacerbate many infectious diseases. Infectious complications are considered to be the second main cause of morbidity and mortality in iron loaded thalassemia patients. Effective chelation therapy leading to the normalization of the iron stores could reduce the incidence of related infections. Microbial pathogens could obtain growth-essential iron from healthy hosts. Conversely, iron withholding and/or removal is an important defense strategy for mammalian hosts, which is primarily accomplished by the iron chelating proteins transferrin and lactoferrin. Chelating drug

Background/Objectives: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional disorder in childhood worldwide. It has profound consequences for growth, neurodevelopment, behaviour, and overall health. Despite the long-standing efficacy of oral ferrous salts, their poor gastrointestinal tolerability and adherence challenges have spurred the development of alternative formulations and innovative dosing strategies. Methods: We conducted a narrative review of national and international guidelines, pediatric randomized controlled trials, observational and cohort studies, cost-effectiveness analyses, d

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends universal iron supplementation for children aged 6-23 months in countries where anaemia is seen in over 40% of the population. Conventional ferrous salts have low efficacy due to low oral absorption in children with inflammation. Haem iron is more bioavailable, and its absorption may not be decreased by inflammation. This study aims to compare daily supplementation with haem iron versus ferrous sulphate on haemoglobin concentration and serum ferritin concentration after 12 weeks of supplementation.
METHODS: This will be a two-arm, randomise

Pathogenic TMPRSS6 variants impairing matriptase-2 function result in inappropriately high hepcidin levels relative to body iron status, leading to iron refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA). As diagnosing IRIDA can be challenging due to its genotypical and phenotypical heterogeneity, we assessed the transferrin saturation (TSAT)/hepcidin ratio to distinguish IRIDA from multi-causal iron deficiency anemia (IDA). We included 20 IRIDA patients from a registry for rare inherited iron disorders and then enrolled 39 controls with IDA due to other causes. Plasma hepcidin-25 levels were measured

BACKGROUND: Oral iron is recommended as first line treatment of anemia in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (ND-CKD) patients. Sucrosomial® iron, a new generation oral iron with high absorption and bioavailability and a low incidence of side effects, has shown to be not inferior to intravenous (IV) iron in the replacement of iron deficiency anemia in patients with ND-CKD. Besides the clinical benefit, it is also important to determine the comparative total costs of oral versus IV iron administrations. The aim of this study was to perform a cost-minimization analysis of oral Sucrosomial iron,

Iron deficiency (ID) is common in patients with heart failure (HF) and is independently associated with poor outcomes, such as reduced functional capacity and quality of life, increased frailty and increased risk of HF hospitalisations and mortality. Intravenous iron has been shown to be an effective and well-tolerated therapy in patients with HF with reduced and mildly reduced ejection fraction and ID, improving quality of life and functional status and reducing the risk of HF hospitalisations. This review aims to summarise the evidence behind intravenous iron therapy in HF from recent key ra

Iron deficiency (ID) and ID anemia (IDA) are global health concerns that tend to affect vulnerable populations, including women, children, and those living in areas disproportionately affected by environmental health hazards. A review of the literature was conducted using the top ten chemicals of public health concern as identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020, in combination with the terms "iron deficiency" and "anemia." Both epidemiological and controlled experimental studies were considered. Eight contaminants or exposure classifications were ultimately considered to be wi

Iron constitutes an essential micronutrient in living organisms. All iron is absorbed into the body through dietary intake, except for exogenous therapeutic sources. Dietary iron is typically categorized as either heme or nonheme iron. Nonheme iron is essential for regulating iron in the body, as it exists in various forms, including soluble iron, storage iron within ferritin, and iron found in the catalytic centers of a wide range of proteins. Iron homeostasis is carefully managed to ensure that sufficient iron is available for critical biological processes while preventing the harmful effect

Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is a group of neurodegenerative diseases that are typically caused by a monogenetic mutation, leading to development of disordered movement symptoms such as dystonia, hyperreflexia, etc. Brain iron accumulation can be diagnosed through MRI imaging and is hypothesized to be the cause of oxidative stress, leading to the degeneration of brain tissue. There are four main types of NBIA: pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN), PLA2G6-associated neurodegeneration (PLAN), mitochondrial membrane protein-associated neurodegeneration

The chemistry of hypercoordination has been a subject of fundamental interest, especially for understanding structures that challenge conventional wisdom. The small ionic radii of Fe ions typically result in coordination numbers of 4 or 6 in stable Fe-bearing ionic compounds. While 8-coordinated Fe has been observed in highly compressed oxides, the pursuit of hypercoordinated Fe still faces significant challenges due to the complexity of synthesizing the anticipated compound with another suitable anion. Through first-principles simulation and advanced crystal structure prediction methods, we p

Despite the vital role of iron and vulnerability of iron metabolism in disease states, it remains largely unknown whether chemicals interacting with cellular proteins are responsible for perturbation of iron metabolism. We previously demonstrated that cisplatin was an inhibitor of the iron regulatory system by blocking IRP2 (iron regulatory protein 2) binding to an iron-responsive element (IRE) located in the 3'- or 5'-UTR (untranslated region) of key iron metabolism genes such as transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) and ferritin mRNAs. To guide the development of new chemical probes to modulate the

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most serious forms of malnutrition. Wild type strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae have higher tolerance to inorganic iron and higher iron conversion and accumulation capacity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of S. cerevisiae enriched iron as a potential organic iron supplement on mice with iron deficiency anemia. 60 male Kunming mice (KM mice, with strong adaptability and high reproduction rate, it can be widely used in pharmacology, toxicology, microbiology and other research) were randomly divided into normal control group and ir

Iron is an essential nutrient and a constituent of ferroproteins and enzymes crucial for human life. Generally, nonmenstruating individuals preserve iron very efficiently, losing less than 0.1% of their body iron content each day, an amount that is replaced through dietary iron absorption. Most of the iron is in the hemoglobin (Hb) of red blood cells (RBCs); thus, blood loss is the most common cause of acute iron depletion and anemia worldwide, and reduced hemoglobin synthesis and anemia are the most common consequences of low plasma iron concentrations. The term iron deficiency (ID) refers to

Iron is an important micronutrient required for a number of biological processes including oxygen transport, cellular respiration, the synthesis of nucleic acids and the activity of key enzymes. The World Health Organization has recognised iron deficiency as the most common nutritional deficiency globally and as a major determinant of anaemia. Iron deficiency anaemia affects 40% of all children between the ages of 6 and 59 months, 37% of mothers who are pregnant and 30% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 years worldwide. Dietary iron exists in two main forms known as haem iron and non-haem

A 56-year-old female presented with a diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia over three years prior (on oral iron supplementation) and presented with altered mental status. She was admitted to the Coronary Care Unit for troponinemia and T-wave inversions. Two-dimensional echocardiography revealed hypokinesia of the left ventricle (LV) anterior wall with reduced ejection fraction. The patient was stabilized on metoprolol and heparin infusions, but heparin was discontinued after iron studies revealed overload (iron: 159 ug/dL, 100% saturation, ferritin: 1480 ng/mL). Cardiac MRI revealed mixed conce

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is one of the most common chronic liver diseases. Its pathological spectrum includes the overlapping stages of hepatic steatosis/steatohepatitis that can progress to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis; both are risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma. Moreover, ALD diagnosis and management pose several challenges. The early pathological stages are reversible by alcohol abstinence, but these early stages are often asymptomatic, and currently, there is no specific laboratory biomarker or diagnostic test that can confirm ALD etiology. Alcohol consumers frequentl

OBJECTIVES: To study the efficacy of intermittent iron supplementation in children with mild iron-deficiency anemia.
METHODS: A total of 147 children with mild iron-deficiency anemia were enrolled in this prospective study. They were divided into an intermittent iron supplementation group (n=83) and a conventional iron supplementation group (n=64). The levels of hemoglobin were measured before treatment and after 1 and 3 months of treatment. The treat response rate and the incidence rate of adverse drug reactions were compared between the two groups.
RESULTS: Both groups had a significant in
