BACKGROUND: The prevalence of iron deficiency in the Lebanese pediatric population is unknown. The aim of this study is to estimate this prevalence in Lebanese schoolchildren and to assess the relation between iron status and related factors.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 903 children aged 8-18 years (466 boys and 437 girls) were included in the study. Recruitment was done from ten schools with different SES levels and located in the Great Beirut and Mount Lebanon areas. Serum ferritin was measured in all participants and testosterone was measured only in boys using Immulite chemiluminescent a

Iron deficiency (ID) is associated with sleep disorders, but standardized assessment of iron status in the diagnostic work-up and iron supplementation as treatment have not been considered in clinical practice. We investigated associations of ID with type and severity of sleep disorders and whether iron supplementation improves sleep-related symptoms. In 2017, we conducted a scoping review for the period 1972-2016 using the terms "iron deficiency anemia" and "sleep" on biomedical database search engines, and in 2019, we updated our review with an ad-hoc search. Among the 93 articles meeting ou

BACKGROUND: Current evidence suggests that adult men and nonmenstruating women with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) should undergo gastrointestinal (GI) evaluation to detect a potential bleeding lesion. We hypothesized that after endoscopic evaluation and treatment, IDA would be expected to resolve. Thus, we aimed to understand the natural history of IDA, in particular long-term outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult patients with IDA (defined as anemia and ferritin <50 ng/mL) who were diagnosed between 2004 and 2008 and who underwent endoscopic evaluation as part of their diagnostic work-up for

Few case series of pagophagia and iron deficiency include men. We performed a retrospective study of non-Hispanic white men with iron-deficiency anemia whose anemia and pagophagia, thrombocytosis, and thrombocytopenia (if present) resolved after iron replacement. Iron-deficiency anemia was defined as transferrin saturation (TS) <15%, serum ferritin (SF) <30 μg/L, and hemoglobin (Hb) <13.0 g/dL. We excluded men with: anemia, thrombocytosis, or thrombocytopenia due to non-iron-deficiency causes; malignancy; chronic inflammatory conditions; hemochromatosis; or creatinine >1.1 mg/dL. We computed u

Anemia affects a fourth of the global population, with iron deficiency remaining the primary cause. It is associated with diminished work capacity, fatigue, impaired cognitive function, and can negatively impact the course of diseases like chronic heart failure or chronic kidney disease. Treatment options include oral and intravenous iron; however, conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, or autoimmune gastritis can diminish the efficacy of oral iron. Timely recognition of iron deficiency anemia and administration of appropriate therapy not only improves quality of life,

A 49-year-old Brazilian male presented to the emergency department with a five-day history of abdominal pain, dark stools, and syncope. Physical examination did not reveal any melena on digital rectal examination and there were no stigmata of chronic liver disease. Laboratory results showed hemoglobin of 47 g/L, MCV of 80 fL, and ferritin of 6 ng/mL. Liver enzymes and liver function tests were normal. Abdominal ultrasound showed a cirrhotic liver with splenomegaly and varices suggestive of portal hypertension. His past history was significant for cirrhosis based on a previous variceal bleed bu

We re-evaluated the old hypothesis that gastritis-induced achlorhydria is a cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in humans. First, we analyzed the currently available research on the association between achlorhydria and IDA. When gastric acid secretion was measured after maximal stimulation, the frequency of achlorhydria (or severe hypochlorhydria) was 44% in patients with idiopathic IDA and 1.8% in healthy controls. In some patients with pernicious anemia, presumed achlorhydria preceded the development of IDA in time. However, we found no credible evidence that IDA caused gastritis or that I

Iron is an important micronutrient that may be depleted in celiac disease. Iron deficiency and anemia may complicate well-established celiac disease, but may also be the presenting clinical feature in the absence of diarrhea or weight loss. If iron deficiency anemia occurs, it should be thoroughly evaluated, even if celiac disease has been defined since other superimposed causes of iron deficiency anemia may be present. Most often, impaired duodenal mucosal uptake of iron is evident since surface absorptive area in the duodenum is reduced, in large part, because celiac disease is an immune-med

Iron (Fe) is an essential element for most living organisms. To acquire sparingly soluble Fe from the rhizosphere, rice roots rely on two Fe acquisition pathways. The first of these pathways involves Fe(III) chelators specific to graminaceous plants, the mugineic acid family phytosiderophores, and the second involves absorption of Fe(2+). Key components in this response include enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of deoxymugineic acid (OsNAS1, OsNAS2, OsNAAT1, and OsDMAS1), the deoxymugineic acid efflux transporter (TOM1), the Fe(III)-deoxymugineic acid transporter (OsYSL15), and Fe(2+) trans

We report a rare case of anemia and thrombocytopenia as a result of uterine fibroid and adenomyosis, complicated by immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Symptoms were presented as menorrhagia and metrorrhagia in a 34-year-old African American woman, who was later treated with blood and platelet transfusion and iron therapy with steroids. Uterine fibroids are commonly found to cause hematologic disturbances such as anemia and reactive thrombocytosis and, less commonly, thrombocytopenia. Moreover, such hematologic disturbances are secondary to heavy and irregular uterine bleeding, which is typ

Iron-deficiency anaemia in very old patients is a frequent finding; this often poses a diagnostic dilemma for the physician. For example, should additional testing take place? And if so, what kind of tests? Is prescribing iron supplement therapy and adopting an expectative course sufficient? The two cases in this article illustrate different treatment strategies. If doubts about which strategy to choose arise, it is recommended that iron first be supplied and the effect of this treatment checked after three weeks. The haemoglobin level should have risen at least 0.7 mmol/l. If there has been n

A 55-year-old patient was diagnosed having a malignant melanoma metastatic to the small bowel as cause of an iron deficiency anemia. Although up to 60% of patients with metastatic melanoma are found to have intestinal metastases at autopsy, clinically apparent gastrointestinal involvement is rare during lifetime and often delayed after resection of the primary tumor. Diagnostic procedures include radiological imaging and endoscopic modalities. Early diagnosis is desirable for prognostic reason both in curative and palliative settings.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency, the most common cause of anaemia in pregnancy worldwide, can be mild, moderate or severe. Severe anaemia can have very serious consequences for mothers and babies, but there is controversy about whether treating mild or moderate anaemia provides more benefit than harm.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of different treatments for anaemia in pregnancy attributed to iron deficiency (defined as haemoglobin less than 11 g/dL or other equivalent parameters) on maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childb

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A deficiency alters iron status leading to an iron overload in tissues; however, the mechanism of this interaction is poorly understood. The present study aimed to assess the effect of vitamin A deficiency on iron bioavailability and utilization in rats.
METHODS: Animals were divided into three groups of six rats each that were fed AIN-93G diet (control group), a vitamin A deficient diet and an iron and vitamin A deficient diet, respectively, for 57 days. The concentrations of hepatic and splenic iron, haemoglobin, red and white cells as well as iron utilization and its bi

CONTEXT: Obesity is associated with hypoferremia, but it is unclear if this condition is caused by insufficient iron stores or diminished iron availability related to inflammation-induced iron sequestration.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationships between obesity, serum iron, measures of iron intake, iron stores and inflammation. We hypothesized that both inflammation-induced sequestration of iron and true iron deficiency were involved in the hypoferremia of obesity.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of factors anticipated to affect serum iron.
SETTING: Outpatient clinic visits.

Iron deficiency, with or without iron-deficiency anemia, is so ubiquitous that it affects all populations of the world irrespective of race, culture, or ethnic background. Despite all the latest advances in modern medicine, improved nutrition, and the ready availability of cheap oral iron, there is still no good explanation for the widespread persistence of iron deficiency. It is possible that the iron deficiency phenotype is very prevalent because of many factors other than the commonly cited causes such as a decreased availability or an increased utilization of iron. Several thousand years a

The physiology of iron homeostasis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and therapeutic options in iron-deficiency anemia are discussed. Iron deficiency is the most common haematological disorder encountered in general practice and iron-deficiency anemia is the most frequently occurring anemia throughout the world. Blood loss is a major cause of iron-deficiency anemia. Gastrointestinal bleeding is the most common cause of iron deficiency in adult men and is second only to menstrual blood loss as a cause in women. Iron-deficiency anemia is not a disease itself but a manifes

Anaemia has remained a widespread public health problem in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Prevalence figures vary from a low of 17% to a high of over 70% among preschool children; from 14% to 42% among adolescents and from 11% to over 40% among women of childbearing age. Although the prevalence of anaemia has often been used as a proxy indicator for iron deficiency anaemia, this approach is not valid in settings where the etiology of anaemia is complex or unknown or where other micronutrient deficiencies of folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin A can co-exist. An integrated, multifac
