Knee dislocation with concomitant multiligament injury is a rare and devastating injury. We report the successful repair of a rare case of open knee dislocation with concomitant multiligament injury and patellar tendon rupture of an 18-year-old male due to a motorcycle accident. The patient presented with an open wound running parallel to the knee joint line and patellar tendon rupture with full exposure of the cartilage of the distal femur. Staged surgical management including the application of a ring-type external fixator with a hinged joint, lateral collateral ligament repair, medial colla

This report presents the first case of a knee dislocation following septic arthritis after arthroscopy. A 65-year-old woman had an arthroscopy with irrigation and debridement (I&D) of the joint and microfracture for the chondral lesions. She had complaints of postarthroscopic infection but non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and local ice compression was recommended. She revisited her physician twice and at the last visit she had a large purulent effusion in her knee. The gram stain of the joint fluid aspirate demonstrated gram-positive cocci and the cultures grew methicilline-sensitive

PURPOSE: A common peroneal nerve (CPN) palsy has been reported to complicate knee dislocations in 5-40 % of patients. Patients who suffer from a persistent foot drop have significantly worse functional outcomes. Reports on prognostic factors for nerve recovery or treatment-specific functional outcomes remain sparse in the literature.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers completed a search of Medline, Embase, PubMed and the Cochrane Library from 1946 to present. Motor strength was determined using the Medical Research Council (MRC) grading system or an equivalent description. A functional recove

Metallosis is a rare cause of failure after unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) and has only previously been reported when there has been abnormal metal-on-metal contact. We present a case report of a 67-year-old woman who was admitted to our department with a 5-month history of a painful right knee. There was no history of trauma and her past medical history was unremarkable. She had undergone a primary mobile bearing medial UKR of her right knee 5 years ago. During the preceding 5 months, the patient complained that the knee was becoming unstable, was painful, and was making frequent cli

BACKGROUND: Acute knee (tibiofemoral joint) dislocation is a serious knee injury, although population-based numbers and incidence rates of knee dislocation with or without concomitant vascular injury are unknown.
METHODS: The study covered the whole adult population of 4 million persons (aged ≥ 18 years) in Finland during the 11-year period from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2011. Data on hospitalization caused by acute knee dislocations and concomitant vascular injuries requiring operative treatment were obtained from the nationwide National Hospital Discharge Registry.
RESULTS: During t

Irreducible knee dislocation due to incarcerated soft tissue structures in associated fractures is extremely uncommon. We report a case of irreducible, closed dislocation of the knee secondary to incarcerated patellar tendon in a Hoffa fracture (unicondylar fracture of femur in the coronal plane) with associated communited fracture of patella and disruption of both cruciates. We treated this case initially with open reduction and internal fixation of fracture and repair of the patellar tendon. During the total followup period of eighteen months, the patient had restricted joint range of motion

Report of an 18-year-old black girl successfully treated for congenital dislocation of the hips and knees is presented. Progress from date of birth, methods of treatment, and results are given. It is concluded that the condition is unusual, that dysplasia and intrauterine forces are the cause, that early treatment gives excellent results without surgery, and that follow-up through the entire growth period is essential.

Traumatic knee dislocations are rare but serious injuries associated with limb-threatening vascular compromise and a frequently poor functional prognosis. We report the case of a 70-year-old man with known dementia who sustained a high-energy road traffic accident resulting in bilateral knee dislocation. On admission, he was hemodynamically stable with preserved and symmetrical distal peripheral pulses. Initial radiographs confirmed bilateral dislocation, and computed tomography angiography of the lower limbs showed no arterial injury, particularly of the popliteal arteries. After pre-anesthet

To report clinical and functional outcomes, including patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), complications, reoperation rates, and arthritic progression in patients who sustained a knee dislocation (KD) type V fracture dislocation at minimum 2-year follow-up. A retrospective review from a prospectively collected database was performed to identify all patients with a KD type V fracture dislocation between 2001 and 2022 at a single institution. Patient demographics, pre- and postoperative clinical examination findings, intraoperative details, and postoperative complication rates were obtaine

CASE: A 62-year-old man presented with a posterolateral knee dislocation sustained in a motorcycle collision initially managed nonsurgically. His treatment was complicated by recurrent dislocation from noncompliance with bracing and weight-bearing restrictions and by comorbidities including peripheral artery disease, type 2 diabetes, and heavy smoking and drinking. He was treated with a multiplanar knee-spanning external fixator and patellar tendon repair without further ligamentous reconstruction. This treatment provided a stable, functional knee with minimal pain.
CONCLUSIONS: In this compl

BACKGROUND: Excellent medium-term to long-term results for function and survivorship have been shown with mobile-bearing (MB) total knee arthroplasty (TKA). One of the key arguments against its use is the risk of "spinout" or dislocation of the MB. The aim of this study is to discuss the etiology, prevention, incidence, management, and outcome of spinout.
METHODS: Between October 1993 and February 2016, 8373 consecutive primary MB TKAs were performed irrespective of preoperative deformity. Before 2001, soft-tissue knee balancing was achieved by release of collateral ligaments and all spinouts

INTRODUCTION: Reduced intrauterine space gives rise to 'packaging disorder' which may involve joint dislocations or contractures. We present an unique case where mutiple joints were dislocated involving left congenital knee dislocation (CDK), bilateral congenital hip dislocation (CDH) and congenital talipes equino varus (CTEV)deformities.
CASE REPORT: A preterm baby boy born to mother with diagnosed oligohydramios presented with left CDK bilateral DDH and CTEV. The knee dislocation was treated first with gradual streaching and weekly above knee cast. At 7th week good flexion was achieved at b

Joint dislocation after total knee arthroplasty is a rare complication. It is described as the result of ligamentous instability. Here we report the case of an 82-year-old women who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for advanced primary grade III gonarthrosis. At 3 post-operative months the joint was stable and painless, with radiographic evidence of good TKA alignment and integration. At 4 months the patient suffered injury to the ankle involving a bimalleolar fracture and damage to knee soft tissues. The fracture was surgically treated. Subsequently, dorsal tibial dislocation w

Seven patients (average age, 26.3 years) with traumatic knee dislocations were retrospectively evaluated more than 2 years (average, 51 months) after having fresh-frozen allograft anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstructions. All patients were treated consecutively at an average of 9.6 days after injury. Two patients had arterial injuries and three patients had or developed common peroneal nerve palsy. Five patients had 20 additional injuries. All patients were enlisted in an early, aggressive physical therapy regimen with early protected weightbearing. Four patients required a man

A study was undertaken of 32 dislocations occurring during a nine-year period in 25 of 1280 postoperative total hip arthroplasty patients. Dislocations occurred in 0.6% of 1030 primary procedures, 1.6% of 165 conversions of hemiarthroplasties to total arthroplasties, and 20% of 85 revisions of previous total hip arthroplasties. Average time to dislocation was 31 days after primary procedures and 106 days after revisions. Acetabular cup malposition and poor patient cooperation appeared to be the causes of dislocation after primary procedures. Trochanteric absence or compromise was a factor in d

Knee dislocation is an uncommon lesion. It is, however, frequently associated with injury to surrounding structures. The possible coexistence of trauma of the popliteal artery is a serious threat to the limb's integrity. Its incidence is high (about one third of cases) and, unless speedily discovered and treated, it leads to limb loss. Three cases of knee dislocation with combined injury to the popliteal artery successfully underwent surgery. On the basis of such experience, the authors survey the questions of vascular reconstructive surgery that still remain open: in particular, the delay in

Dislocation of a total condylar knee replacement occurred because of rotatory malposition of the tibial component. The dislocation was evaluated by open operation and in the laboratory. It can be prevented by: directing the tibial component at the tibial tubercle; not using the posterior edge of the tibia to align the tibial component; recognizing the "contradictory rotation" of the tibia. At operation the tibia externally rotates with flexion and lateral patellar dislocation for exposure. However, the screw-home mechanism in normal gait causes the tibia to internally rotate with flexion. This
