Toward a decent learning theory: a structural-psychological framework for understanding students' appraisals of learning.

Research on learning has often focused on ability, motivation, self-regulation, and performance, but these approaches do not fully explain why students within the same educational system may appraise learning in markedly different ways. To address this gap, this article proposes Decent Learning Theory (DLT) to explain adolescents' perceived decent learning from a structural-psychological perspective. DLT draws on educational psychology, developmental psychology, the sociology of education, intersectionality theory, and the Psychology of Working Theory. It proposes that structural educational c

Transfer learning-based safe Q-learning for discrete-time nonlinear systems with asymmetric state constraints.

This article investigates the problem of safe control for discrete-time (DT) nonlinear systems subject to asymmetric state constraints. A novel transfer learning-based safe Q-learning (TL-SQL) algorithm is developed within the adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) framework. To support the proposed TL-SQL algorithm, a novel revived transformation formulation for DT systems is derived, serving as the basis for transferring control policies from unconstrained source systems to constrained target systems. Building upon this foundation, the proposed TL-SQL algorithm improves policy transfer under asy

Artificial intelligence in gastric cancer: a systematic review of machine learning and deep learning applications.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) remains a major global health concern, ranking as the fifth most prevalent malignancy and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Although early detection can increase the 5-year survival rate of early gastric cancer (EGC) to over 90%, more than 80% of cases are diagnosed at advanced stages due to subtle clinical symptoms and diagnostic challenges. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), has shown great promise in addressing these limitations. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to eva

Predictive reward-prediction errors of climbing fiber inputs integrate modular reinforcement learning with supervised learning.

Although the cerebellum is typically associated with supervised learning algorithms, it also exhibits extensive involvement in reward processing. In this study, we investigated the cerebellum's role in executing reinforcement learning algorithms, with a particular emphasis on essential reward-prediction errors. We employed the Q-learning model to accurately reproduce the licking responses of mice in a Go/No-go auditory-discrimination task. This method enabled the calculation of reinforcement learning variables, such as reward, predicted reward, and reward-prediction errors in each learning tri

Learning hemodynamic scalar fields on coronary artery meshes: A benchmark of geometric deep learning models.

Coronary artery disease involves the narrowing of coronary vessels due to atherosclerosis and is currently the leading cause of death worldwide. The gold standard for its diagnosis is the fractional flow reserve (FFR) examination, which measures the trans-stenotic pressure ratio during maximal vasodilation. However, the invasiveness and cost of this procedure have prompted the development of computer-based virtual FFR (vFFR) computation, which simulates coronary flow using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. Geometric deep learning algorithms have recently shown the capability to le

Bypassing Striatal Learning Mechanisms Using Delayed Feedback to Circumvent Learning Deficits in Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Feedback facilitates learning by guiding and modifying behaviors through an action-outcome contingency. As the majority of existing studies have focused on the immediate presentation of feedback, the impact of delayed feedback on learning is understudied. Prior work demonstrated that learning from immediate and delayed feedback employed distinct brain regions in healthy individuals, and compared to healthy individuals, individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are impaired in learning from immediate feedback. The goal of the current investigation was to assess the effects of del

COVID-19, a global pandemic, has killed thousands in the last three years. Pathogenic laboratory testing is the gold standard but has a high false-negative rate, making alternate diagnostic procedures necessary to fight against it. Computer Tomography (CT) scans help diagnose and monitor COVID-19, especially in severe cases. But, visual inspection of CT images takes time and effort. In this study, we employ Convolution Neural Network (CNN) to detect coronavirus infection from CT images. The proposed study utilized transfer learning on the three pre-trained deep CNN models, namely VGG-16, ResNe
