Higher phylogeny of zygaenid moths (Insecta: Lepidoptera) inferred from nuclear and mitochondrial sequence data and the evolution of larval cuticular cavities for chemical defence.

Zygaenid moths are capable of releasing hydrogen cyanide in their defense by enzymatic break-down of cyanoglucosides, but only larvae of chalcosiine and zygaenine moths store cyanogenic compounds in cuticular cavities and thus are able to discharge defense droplets, which effectively deter potential predators. A previously proposed phylogeny of Zygaenidae hypothesized a sister group relationship of chalcosiine and zygaenine moths because of their similar larval defense system. Not all chalcosiine taxa possess cuticular cavities, however, and a comparable defense mechanism has been reported in

An analytical study of the neurosecretory cells of the brain of the mature larvae and diapause pupae of Amsacta collaris Hampson (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) under different temperature regimes.

The neurosecretory cells (NSCs) of the brain of the mature larvae and 3 months old diapause pupae of Amsacta collaris Hampson (Lepidopera: arctiidae) have been studied under different temperature regimes (0, 7, 18, 37, and 42 degrees C), using paraldehyde fuchsin and performic acid resorcin fuchsin staining techniques. The 0 degree C is fatal to the larvae, and at 7 degrees C, within 24 h the quantity of NSM reduced considerably in all the subtypes of A-cells; activity started 3rd day onwards, and on 5th day, the A1-cells appeared loaded with NSM, the A2-cells moderately filled, but no change

Genome-wide identification of neuropeptides from Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) and elucidating the essential roles of adipokinetic hormone in lipid mobilisation and food intake.

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a major pest of cruciferous crops and has developed high levels of resistance to many widely used insecticides. Neuropeptides are involved in regulating essential insect biological processes, which could be considered potential target genes for pest control. In this study, a total of 45 neuropeptide precursor genes were identified in the genome of P. xylostella, including two adipokinetic hormone genes (PxAKH1 and PxAKH2). The qPCR analysis showed that PxAKH genes were highly expressed in third- and fourth-instar lar

Protein content of the Hylesia metabus egg nest setae (Cramer [1775]) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) and its association with the parental investment for the reproductive success and lepidopterism.

UNLABELLED: Hylesia metabus is a neotropical moth possessing toxic setae, which once in contact with the skin cause a severe dermatitis to humans known as lepidopterism. The only known function of the setae in the life cycle is to provide protection during the mating and egg-hatching stages. Approximately 65% of the protein content of the setae is a cluster of five proteases (28-45kDa) showing sequence homology to other S1A serine proteases. The N-glycans of a 40kDa protease are a mixture of neutral and sulfated G0F structures. The sulfated N-glycans have an important role in triggering the in

The Pieris climate accords: how climate change shapes molecular interactions between the butterfly Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) and its host plant Arabidopsis thaliana (Brassicales: Brassicaceae).

Global temperatures are projected to rise by approximately 1.5 °C between 2030 and 2050, driven by increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. Such rapid climate change is predicted to drive correspondingly rapid change in animals and plants, particularly those that humans depend on for food and security. Here, we investigated how increased temperature and CO2 may affect herbivore-host plant interactions using controlled experiments with a widespread agricultural pest, the cabbage white butterfly Pieris rapae, and a model host plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. Pieris rapae and A. thaliana w

The Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Influences Nilaparvata lugens Population Growth Directly, by Preying on Its Eggs, and Indirectly, by Inducing Defenses in Rice.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, has become one of the most important pests on corn in China since it invaded in 2019. Although FAW has not been reported to cause widespread damage to rice plants in China, it has been sporadically found feeding in the field. If FAW infests rice in China, the fitness of other insect pests on rice may be influenced. However, how FAW and other insect pests on rice interact remains unknown. In this study, we found that the infestation of FAW larvae on rice plants prolonged the developmental duration of the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens

Juice Grape Canopy Structure and Cluster Availability Do Not Reduce Middle- and Late-Season Captures of Male Paralobesia viteana (Lepidoptera: Totricidae) in Sex Pheromone Traps.

Paralobesia viteana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera:Tortricidae), the grape berry moth, is a major economic pest of cultivated grapes in eastern North America. Although pheromone lures and traps are available for monitoring this pest, male moth captures in these traps decline as the infestation risk increases through the multiple generations that occur during a season. This makes it difficult to use traps to monitor this pest's population dynamics and complicates the timing of pest management activities. To test whether seasonal changes in the plant canopy affect captures of male grape berry moth, we m

Strong cytoplasmic incompatibility and high vertical transmission rate can explain the high frequencies of Wolbachia infection in Japanese populations of Colias erate poliographus (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).

Wolbachia, belonging to Alphaproteobacteria, is ubiquitously found in arthropods and filarial nematodes, and is known to manipulate the reproduction of its hosts in various ways, such as feminization, male killing, induction of parthenogenesis or induction of cytoplasmic incompatibility. We found that the Wolbachia infection frequencies of the butterfly Colias erate poliographus were high (85.7-100%) in seven Japanese populations. Crossing experiments and rearing revealed that the Wolbachia strain exhibited strong cytoplasmic incompatibility and perfect vertical transmission in C. erate poliog

Localization of ecdysone receptor protein during colour pattern formation in wings of the butterfly Precis coenia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) and co-expression with Distal-less protein.

Butterfly wing colour patterns are determined during late larval and early pupal development, a part of metamorphosis controlled by ecdysteroid hormones via their nuclear hormone receptors. We have sequenced a fragment of the common regions of the ecdysone receptor (EcR) from the butterflies Precis coenia and Bicyclus anynanaand found high identities (83.5% to 100%) to EcR from a moth, Manduca sexta. In P. coenia, we sequenced a putative EcR-B1 isoform with 80.4% identity with the A/B-region of the M. sexta-EcR-B1. Consequently, we used antibodies generated against MsEcR-B1 to localise EcR pro

Toxicity assessment and transcriptomic analysis of Metarhizium rileyi (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): identification of tyrosol as a key quorum sensing regulator of pathogenicity.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, a severe crop pest, gained significant attention following its invasion of China in 2019. This study aimed to investigate the virulence and in vivo pathogenic transition of Metarhizium rileyi on S. frugiperda to understand biological control strategies. Using the immersion method, M. rileyi exhibited higher lethality toward third-instar larvae compared to fourth-instar larvae, with LC50 values of 3.15 × 107 conidia/ml and 1.04 × 108 conidia/ml, respectively. Microscopic observations revealed that M. rileyi initially existed as a yeast-like nonpathogeni

Patterns of cross pollination between Bt and non-Bt corn and effects on Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in blended refuges of short-stature corn and tall corn.

Short-stature corn became available to farmers in the United States in 2025. Advantages of short-stature corn over taller corn hybrids include lodging resistance, convenient sprayer access, and the potential for higher planting density. Corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is an important insect pest of corn and other crops throughout the United States, but little is known about how corn earworm interacts with short-stature corn. Genetically modified corn containing genes from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) produce toxins that, once ingested, kill insect pests. Blended r
