Evidence that a lineage of teleost-infecting blood flukes (Aporocotylidae) infects bivalves as intermediate hosts.

The family Aporocotylidae is recognized as having the widest intermediate host usage in the Digenea. Currently, intermediate host groups are clearly correlated with definitive host groups; all known life cycles of marine teleost-infecting aporocotylids involve polychaetes, those of freshwater teleost-infecting aporocotylids involve gastropods, and those of chondrichthyan-infecting aporocotylids involve bivalves. Here we report the life cycle for a marine elopomorph-infecting species, Elopicola bristowi Orélis-Ribeiro & Bullard in Orélis-Ribeiro, Halanych, Dang, Bakenhaster, Arias & Bullard, 20

Malaria parasite egress at a glance.

All intracellular pathogens must escape (egress) from the confines of their host cell to disseminate and proliferate. The malaria parasite only replicates in an intracellular vacuole or in a cyst, and must undergo egress at four distinct phases during its complex life cycle, each time disrupting, in a highly regulated manner, the membranes or cyst wall that entrap the parasites. This Cell Science at a Glance article and accompanying poster summarises our current knowledge of the morphological features of egress across the Plasmodium life cycle, the molecular mechanisms that govern the process,

Review of Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Diptera: Muscidae) as a useful tool in forensic entomology.

Synthesiomyia nudiseta (van der Wulp, 1883) is a synanthropic muscid found in tropical and subtropical zones around the world. The larvae of this species are a secondary agent of myiasis with necrophagous habits and play an important role in forensic entomology, as they are used as an indicator of post-mortem interval. Adults can be considered vectors of etiological agents such as Escherichia coli and Shigella dysenteriae. Due to its ability to adapt to different environmental conditions, its high dispersal capacity (shown by its introduction to Europe), its predatory habits in the last larval

An efficient photograph-based quantitative method for assessing castrating trematode parasites in bivalve molluscs.

Parasitic castration of bivalves by trematodes is common, and may significantly reduce the reproductive capacity of ecologically important species. Understanding the intensity of infection is desirable, as it can indicate the time that has passed since infection, and influence the host's physiological and reproductive response. In addition, it is useful to know the developmental stage of the trematode, to understand trematode population trends and reproductive success. However, most existing methods (e.g. visually estimating the degree of infection) to assess intensity are approximate only and

Oseltamivir analogs with potent anti-influenza virus activity.

Influenza A and B viruses cause seasonal worldwide influenza epidemics each winter, and are a major public health concern and cause of morbidity and mortality. A substantial reduction in influenza-related deaths can be attributed to both vaccination and administration of oseltamivir (OS), which is approved for oral administration and inhibits viral neuraminidase (NA), a transmembrane protein. OS carboxylate (OSC), the active form of OS, is formed by the action of endogenous esterase, which targets NA and is shown to significantly reduce influenza-related deaths. However, the development of res

Characterization of protein arginine methyltransferase of TgPRMT5 in Toxoplasma gondii.

BACKGROUND: Protein arginine methylation is a prevalent post-translational modification. The protein arginine methyltransferase family (PRMT) is involved in many cellular processes in eukaryotes, including transcriptional regulation, epigenetic regulation, RNA metabolism, and DNA damage repair. Toxoplasma gondii, an opportunistic protozoan parasite, encodes five conserved PRMTs. PRMT5 is thought to be responsible for substantial PRMT activity in T. gondii; however, it has not yet been characterized. METHODS: We tagged the 3' end of the endogenous TgPRMT5 genomic locus with sequence encoding a

Cepaea spp. as a source of Brachylaima mesostoma (Digenea: Brachylaimidae) and Brachylecithum sp. (Digenea: Dicrocoeliidae) larvae in Poland.

Parasite diagnostics were carried out on 11 Polish populations of Cepaea spp. In three of them, coming from the roadside ditches of a village (Rytel, northern Poland), very high (up to 60%) prevalence of Brachylaima mesostoma was observed. This study provides the first molecular evidence of the presence of B. mesostoma inside Cepaea spp. in Europe. In a few snails from a population found in a private garden in a small town (Chełmża, northern Poland), larvae of Brachylecithum sp. were present. Cercariae and/or metacercariae of B. mesostoma were observed in both species of Cepaea: C. hortensis a

Can we be sure that the human Plasmodium exoerythrocytic developmental stages occur exclusively in the liver?

The development cycle of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium sp., in humans takes place after an infected female Anopheles mosquito injects motile infective forms called sporozoites into the bloodstream. Sporozoites migrate via blood vessels to the liver. This pre-erythrocytic tissue stage is widely accepted to occur in humans exclusively in the liver, contrary to avian malaria where this may occur also in other parenchymatous organs. This concept is based on research conducted by English researchers Henry Shortt and P.C.C. Garnham in the late 1940s. Although Italian researchers as, e.g., Giulio

Syrian Hamster as an Advanced Experimental Model for Visceral Leishmaniasis.

Animal models are needed along the development and evaluation of potential chemotherapeutic agents against leishmaniasis. Infections of Syrian hamsters with Leishmania species causing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) closely mimic the disease in the natural hosts, including target organs, lesions, and clinical course. Therefore, despite some shortcomings (e.g., genetic background, price, and scarcity of reagents), it is probably the best laboratory rodent model of VL. However, handling of hamsters can be technically challenging because of their particular anatomy. Here, we describe in detail four d

Mitochondrial behaviour throughout the lytic cycle of Toxoplasma gondii.

Mitochondria distribution in cells controls cellular physiology in health and disease. Here we describe the mitochondrial morphology and positioning found in the different stages of the lytic cycle of the eukaryotic single-cell parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The lytic cycle, driven by the tachyzoite life stage, is responsible for acute toxoplasmosis. It is known that whilst inside a host cell the tachyzoite maintains its single mitochondrion at its periphery. We found that upon parasite transition from the host cell to the extracellular matrix, mitochondrion morphology radically changes, resultin

Epigenetics and locust life phase transitions.

Insects are one of the most successful classes on Earth, reflected in an enormous species richness and diversity. Arguably, this success is partly due to the high degree to which polyphenism, where one genotype gives rise to more than one phenotype, is exploited by many of its species. In social insects, for instance, larval diet influences the development into distinct castes; and locust polyphenism has tricked researchers for years into believing that the drastically different solitarious and gregarious phases might be different species. Solitarious locusts behave much as common grasshoppers

Transmission of Dientamoeba fragilis: pinworm or cysts?

Recently, conflicting evidence has been published on the mode of transmission of the trichomonad Dientamoeba fragilis. Detection of D. fragilis DNA inside Enterobius vermicularis eggs agrees with the prediction of Dobell in 1940 that the eggs of a nematode act as a vector for transmission. However, the identification of a cyst stage of D. fragilis in the stool of rodents infected with a human isolate has also been reported, and this implies a life cycle similar to those of most other intestinal protistan parasites. Herein we discuss the recent data, identify gaps in the experimental evidence,

New insights into the life cycle of Platynosomum (Trematoda: Dicrocoeliidae).

The platynosomiasis, a worldwide parasitic disease with importance for domestic cat, has an etiological agent species of trematodes of the genus Platynosomum, whose complete life cycles are not yet known. The real role of lizards in the transmission of this dicrocoeliid parasite (as obligatory intermediate or paratenic host) still needs to be defined. In the present study, oval-shaped encysted metacercariae obtained from terrestrial isopods (Oniscidea sp. and Nagurus nanus) and elongated excysted metacercariae found in biliary ducts and gallbladder of lizards (Hemidactylus mabouia) in Brazil w

Paragonimus & paragonimiasis in India.

Ever since the discovery of the first indigenous case in 1981, paragonimiasis has gained recognition as a significant food borne parasitic zoonosis in India. The data available on the occurrence of paragonimiasis, until today, may be just the tip of an iceberg as the study areas covered were restricted to Northeast Indian States. Nevertheless, the results of research on paragonimiasis in India have revealed valuable information in epidemiology, life cycle, pathobiology and speciation of Indian Paragonimus. Potamiscus manipurensis, Alcomon superciliosum and Maydelliathelphusa lugubris were iden

Hominin life history: reconstruction and evolution.

In this review we attempt to reconstruct the evolutionary history of hominin life history from extant and fossil evidence. We utilize demographic life history theory and distinguish life history variables, traits such as weaning, age at sexual maturity, and life span, from life history-related variables such as body mass, brain growth, and dental development. The latter are either linked with, or can be used to make inferences about, life history, thus providing an opportunity for estimating life history parameters in fossil taxa. We compare the life history variables of modern great apes and
