Giftedness and atypical sexual differentiation: enhanced perceptual functioning through estrogen deficiency instead of androgen excess.

Syndromic autism spectrum conditions (ASC), such as Klinefelter syndrome, also manifest hypogonadism. Compared to the popular Extreme Male Brain theory, the Enhanced Perceptual Functioning model explains the connection between ASC, savant traits, and giftedness more seamlessly, and their co-emergence with atypical sexual differentiation. Overexcitability of primary sensory inputs generates a relative enhancement of local to global processing of stimuli, hindering the abstraction of communication signals, in contrast to the extraordinary local information processing skills in some individuals.

Reduction of somatosensory functional connectivity by transcranial alternating current stimulation at endogenous mu-frequency.

Alpha, the most prominent human brain rhythm, might reflect a mechanism of functional inhibition for gating neural processing. This concept has been derived predominantly from local measures of inhibition, while large-scale network mechanisms to guide information flow are largely unknown. Here, we investigated functional connectivity changes on a whole-brain level by concurrent transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and resting-state functional MRI in humans. We specifically focused on somatosensory alpha-band oscillations by adjusting the tACS frequency to each individual´s somat

Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) is a marker of angiogenesis in the necrotic area of human medulloblastoma.

Angiogenesis plays a key role in the progression of malignant tumors. In recent years, anti-angiogenic drugs have been shown to be effective against tumors. However, some tumors are able to adopt escape mechanisms, suggesting that the vascular network in these tumors may be formed or may function in a different way. Medulloblastomas are tumors characterized by poor prognosis and low patient survival rates. These tumors rarely metastasize, but the reason why they almost always recur locally is not known. Central to mediating neoplastic changes is the interaction between cell surface receptors a

Alterations in resting-state neural networks in subacute non-fluent aphasia after stroke: a fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke aphasia is a prevalent and often disabling language impairment. Despite its high incidence, the neuropathological mechanisms underlying post-stroke aphasia and the neural substrates of functional recovery remain poorly understood. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing targeted rehabilitation strategies. METHODS: In this study, we used fNIRS to collect resting-state data from three participant groups. Pearson correlation was applied to compute whole-brain functional connectivity, followed by graph theory analysis to compare global and regional netwo

Neural oscillations modulation during working memory in pre-manifest and early Huntington's disease.

INTRODUCTION: We recently demonstrated specific spectral signatures associated with updating of memory information, working memory (WM) maintenance and readout, with relatively high spatial resolution by means of high-density electroencephalography (hdEEG). WM is impaired already in early symptomatic HD (early-HD) and in pre-manifest HD (pre-HD). The aim of this study was to test whether hdEEG coupled to source localization allows for the identification of neuronal oscillations in specific frequency bands in 16 pre-HD and early-HD during different phases of a WM task. METHODS: We examined mod

Stress-Related Functional Connectivity Changes Between Auditory Cortex and Cingulate in Tinnitus.

The question arises whether functional connectivity (FC) changes between the distress and tinnitus loudness network during resting state depends on the amount of distress tinnitus patients' experience. Fifty-five patients with constant chronic tinnitus were included in this study. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were performed and seed-based (at the auditory cortex) source localized FC (lagged phase synchronization) was computed for the different EEG frequency bands. Results initially demonstrate that the correlation between loudness and distress is nonlinear. Loudness correlates with

Local and global motion after-effects are both enhanced in migraine, and the underlying mechanisms differ across cortical areas.

Visual after-effects are illusions that occur after prolonged viewing of visual displays (pattern adaptation). The motion after-effect (MAE), for example, is an illusory impression of motion that is seen after viewing moving displays. After-effects have been used extensively in basic vision research as well as in clinical settings, and have been reported to be enhanced in migraine. Pattern adaptation is a cortical phenomenon that reflects both cellular mechanisms acting within individual neurons and specific interactions between groups of neurons activated by the adapting display. A remarkable

Fault Recovery Strategy with Net Load Forecasting Using Bayesian Optimized LSTM for Distribution Networks.

To address the impact of distributed energy resource volatility on distribution network fault restoration, this paper proposes a strategy that incorporates net load forecasting. A Bayesian-optimized long short-term memory neural network is used to accurately predict the net load within fault-affected areas, achieving an R2 of 0.9569 and an RMSE of 12.15 kW. Based on the forecasting results, a fast restoration optimization model is established, with objectives to maximize critical load recovery, minimize switching operations, and reduce network losses. The model is solved using a genetic algori

The human egomotion network.

All volitional movement in a three-dimensional space requires multisensory integration, in particular of visual and vestibular signals. Where and how the human brain processes and integrates self-motion signals remains enigmatic. Here, we applied visual and vestibular self-motion stimulation using fast and precise whole-brain neuroimaging to delineate and characterize the entire cortical and subcortical egomotion network in a substantial cohort (n=131). Our results identify a core egomotion network consisting of areas in the cingulate sulcus (CSv, PcM/pCi), the cerebellum (uvula), and the temp

The perception of breast cancer: what differentiates missed from reported cancers in mammography?

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Mammographers map endogenous and exogenous factors into decisions whether to report the presence of a malignant finding in a mammogram case. Thus, to understand how image-based elements are translated into observer-based decisions, the authors used spatial frequency analysis to model the areas on mammograms that attracted visual attention, in addition to the areas localized as abnormal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four mammographers read 40 two-view mammogram cases, of which 30 contained at least one malignant lesion visible on one or two views. Their eye positions were r

While inventoring the local malacological fauna and evaluating the density of species acting as intermediate hosts of human schistosomes it has been shown that Bulinus truncatus is predominant in the study area. Bulinus globosus is scarcely encountered. Biomphalaria pfeifferi is only found in the Mayo Guerleo, in irrigation canals and draining ditches. But B. globosus and B. pfeifferi have not yet invaded the recent aquatic network and are not found in the lake nor in the newly created irrigation systems. Brain local structural connectomes and the subtypes of the medial temporal lobe parcellations.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the quantitative characteristics and major subtypes of local structural connectomes for medial temporal lobe (MTL) parcellations. METHODS: The Q-Space Diffeomorphic Reconstruction (QSDR) method was used to track white matter fibers for the ROIs within MTL based on the integrating high-resolution T1 structural MR imaging and diffusion MR imaging of 100 adult Chinese individuals. Graph theoretical analysis was employed to construct the local structural connectome models for ROIs within MTL and acquire the network parameters. These connectivity matrices of these connect

Network localization of neurological symptoms from focal brain lesions.

A traditional and widely used approach for linking neurological symptoms to specific brain regions involves identifying overlap in lesion location across patients with similar symptoms, termed lesion mapping. This approach is powerful and broadly applicable, but has limitations when symptoms do not localize to a single region or stem from dysfunction in regions connected to the lesion site rather than the site itself. A newer approach sensitive to such network effects involves functional neuroimaging of patients, but this requires specialized brain scans beyond routine clinical data, making it

Application of exponential random graph models to determine nomadic herders' movements in Senegal.

Understanding human and animal mobility patterns is a key to predict local and global disease spread. We analysed the nomad herds' movement network in a pilot area of northern Senegal and used exponential random graph models (ERGM) to investigate the reasons behind these movements. We interviewed 132 nomadic herders to collect information about nomad herd structures, movements, and reasons for taking specific routes or gathering in certain areas. We constructed a spatially explicit network with villages as the nodes and nomad herds' movements as the connecting edges. The final ERGM showed that

Eye movements in vestibular disorders.

The differential diagnosis of patients with vestibular symptoms usually begins with the question: is the lesion central or is it peripheral? The answer commonly emerges from a careful examination of eye movements, especially when the lesion is located in otherwise clinically silent areas of the brain such as the vestibular portions of the cerebellum (flocculus, paraflocculus which is called the tonsils in humans, nodulus, and uvula) and the vestibular nuclei as well as immediately adjacent areas (the perihypoglossal nuclei and the paramedian nuclei and tracts). The neural circuitry that contro

Investigation of high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging by means of surface and array radiofrequency coils at 7 T.

In this investigation, high-resolution, 1x1x1-mm(3) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 7 T is performed using a multichannel array head coil and a surface coil approach. Scan geometry was optimized for each coil separately to exploit the strengths of both coils. Acquisitions with the surface coil focused on partial brain coverage, while whole-brain coverage fMRI experiments were performed with the array head coil. BOLD sensitivity in the occipital lobe was found to be higher with the surface coil than with the head array, suggesting that restriction of signal detection to the area

Multimodal analysis of neural signals related to source memory encoding in young children.

The emergence of source memory is an important milestone during memory development. Decades of research has explored neural correlates of source memory using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, connections between findings from the two approaches, particularly within children, remain unclear. This study identified fMRI-informed cortical sources of two EEG signals during memory encoding, the P2 and the late slow wave (LSW), that predicted subsequent source memory performance in a sample of children aged 4 to 8 years. Both P2 and LSW were sourc

Disrupted functional and structural networks in cognitively normal elderly subjects with the APOE ɛ4 allele.

As the Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ɛ4 allele is a major genetic risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD), which has been suggested as a disconnection syndrome manifested by the disruption of white matter (WM) integrity and functional connectivity (FC), elucidating the subtle brain structural and functional network changes in cognitively normal ɛ4 carriers is essential for identifying sensitive neuroimaging based biomarkers and understanding the preclinical AD-related abnormality development. We first constructed functional network on the basis of resting-state functional magnetic resonanc
