Do we need separate risk stratification models for hospital mortality after heart valve surgery?

BACKGROUND: The EuroSCORE (European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation) is often used to benchmark and predict hospital mortality after cardiac surgery. Based mainly upon coronary surgery patients, EuroSCORE may not be optimal for valve surgery patients. We evaluated the New York (NY) State dedicated valve surgery models and compared their performance to the EuroSCORE model. METHODS: Required model variables were collected prospectively for all patients, followed by calculation of predictive mortality rates using the logistic and additive EuroSCORE, the logistic and additive NY Stat

Evaluating statistical models for overdispersed multiomics data: a multiplex immunofluorescence case study.

Multiomic data analysis poses statistical challenges. We evaluated statistical models for our multiplex immunofluorescence study of T cell subset densities in colorectal cancer. Using 1235 cases, we compared 7 models-ordinal logistic regression, Poisson, quasi-Poisson, quadratic negative binomial (NB), linear NB, zero-inflated NB, and hurdle NB models-assessing associations with a strong (microsatellite instability, MSI) and a weak (calcium intake) exposure. Simulation studies assessed type I error and power. Effect estimates were generally consistent for the strong exposure (MSI) but varied f

WGRLR: A Weighted Group Regularized Logistic Regression for Cancer Diagnosis and Gene Selection.

Sparse regressions applied to cancer diagnosis suffer from noise reduction, gene grouping, and group significance evaluation. This paper presented the weighted group regularized logistic regression (WGRLR) for dealing with the above problems. Clean data was separated from noisy gene expression profile data, based on which gene grouping and model building were performed. An interpretable gene group significance evaluation criterion was proposed based on symmetrical uncertainty and module eigengene. A group-wise individual gene significance evaluation criterion was also presented. The performanc

Using CyclePhilly data to assess wrong-way riding of cyclists in Philadelphia.

PROBLEM: The increasing use of smartphones and low cost GPS have provided new sources for collecting data and using them to explain travel behavior. This study aims to use data collected from a smartphone application (CyclePhilly) to explain wrong-way riding behavior of cyclists on one-way segments to help better identify the demographic and network factors influencing the wrong-way riding decision making. METHODS: The data used in this study consist of two different sources: (a) Route trips data downloaded from the CyclePhilly Website contained trips detailed up to segment level, collected f

Psychological, Physical and Behavioral Health of Adults, 3 Years After Exposure to a Train Derailment.

In July 2013, a train derailment profoundly disrupted the tranquility of the population of Lac-Mégantic for months and even years. In 2016, we conducted a representative population-based survey among 387 people from Lac-Mégantic and 413 from other municipalities with the aim to document psychological and physical health of adults exposed to the disaster. This article examines differences between 3 groups of respondents: those who were highly, moderately or not exposed to the train accident. Khi Square analyses, odds ratios and logistic regressions were used to examine differences between the 3

Estimation of ordinal population with multi-observer ranked set samples using ties information.

In many surveys, we often deal with situations where measuring the study variable is expensive; however, there are easy-to-measure characteristics which can be used as ranking information to obtain more representative samples from the population. Ranked set sampling is successfully employed in these cases as an alternative to commonly used simple random sampling. When the data is ordinal categorical, it is common to apply the ordinal logistic regression approach to ranked set sampling data for the estimation of parameters. This technique first depends on the information of training data. Besid

Development and validation of prediction models for gestational diabetes mellitus in first-trimester pregnant women.

AIMS: Early intervention can reduce the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and related adverse pregnancy outcomes. Accordingly, this study aims to develop prediction models for GDM in early pregnant women. METHODS: Pregnant women enrolled at Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital were included in the derivation and temporal datasets. Women with electronic data capture records from other subcenters were included in the external validation dataset. Logistic regression and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models were used to predict the risk of GDM. RESULTS: A total of 20,435 pr

Overview of artificial neural network models in the biomedical domain.

AIM: The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of artificial neural network (ANN) in biomedical domain and compare it with the logistic regression model. METHODS: Artificial neural network models and logistic regression models were created and compared using a sample of a modified dataset adapted to the dataset from Framingham Heart Study. R statistical software package is used to create and compare the models. RESULTS: The results indicated that the ANN model is more accurate in classifying the dependent variable than the logistic regression model (84.4 % vs 82.9 %). CONCLUSION: This

Temporal validation of machine learning models for pre-eclampsia prediction using routinely collected maternal characteristics: A validation study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia (PE) contributes to more than one-fourth of all maternal deaths and half a million newborn deaths worldwide every year. Early screening and interventions can reduce PE incidence and related complications. We aim to 1) temporally validate three existing models (two machine learning (ML) and one logistic regression) developed in the same region and 2) compare the performances of the validated ML models with the logistic regression model in PE prediction. This work addresses a gap in the literature by undertaking a comprehensive evaluation of existing risk prediction mod

Comparing methods for risk prediction of multicategory outcomes: dichotomized logistic regression vs. multinomial logit regression.

BACKGROUND: Medical outcomes of interest to clinicians may have multiple categories. Researchers face several options for risk prediction of such outcomes, including dichotomized logistic regression and multinomial logit regression modeling. We aimed to compare these methods and provide guidance needed for practice. METHODS: We described dichotomized logistic regression, multinomial continuation-ratio logit regression, which is an alternative to standard multinomial logit regression for ordinal outcomes, and logistic competing risks regression. We then applied these methods to develop predict

Negative log-binomial model with optimal robust variance to estimate the prevalence ratio, in cross-sectional population studies.

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional studies are useful for the estimation of prevalence of a particular event with concerns in specific populations, as in the case of diseases or other public health interests. Most of these studies have been carried out with binary binomial logistic regression model which estimates OR values that could be overestimated due to the adjustment of the model. Thus, the selection of the best multivariate model for cross-sectional studies is a priority to control the overestimation of the associations. METHODS: We compared the precision of the estimates of the prevalence ra

Characterising model dynamics using sparse grid interpolation: Parameter estimation of cholera.

Sparse grid interpolation is a popular numerical discretization technique for the treatment of high dimensional, multivariate problems. We consider the case of using time-series data to calibrate epidemiological models from both phenomenological and mechanistic perspectives using this computational tool. By capturing the dynamics underlying both global and local spaces, our algorithm identifies potentially optimal regions of the parameter space and directs computational effort towards resolving the dynamics and resulting fits of these regions. We demonstrate how sparse grid interpolants can be

The use of variable selection in clinical prediction modeling for binary outcomes: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical prediction models are valuable tools that can support medical decision-making. Concise and interpretable models are more likely to be adopted in clinical practice; therefore, appropriate selection of predictor variables is often considered essential in model development. Typically, researchers specify a list of candidate predictors based on literature reviews and expert knowledge. Data-driven variable selection methods are then often used to further reduce the number of variables in the final model. However, many commonly used approaches, such as univariable selection, hav

Machine learning for prediction of schizophrenia based on identifying the primary and interaction effects of minor physical anomalies.

In the neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia, minor physical anomalies (MPAs) are considered neurodevelopmental markers of schizophrenia. To date, there has been no research to evaluate the interaction between MPAs. Our study built and used a machine learning model to predict the risk of schizophrenia based on measurements of MPA items and to investigate the potential primary and interaction effects of MPAs. The study included 470 patients with schizophrenia and 354 healthy controls. The models used are classical statistical model, Logistic Regression (LR), and machine leaning models, Deci

Evaluating mortality in intensive care units: contribution of competing risks analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Kaplan-Meier curves and logistic models are widely used to describe and explain the variability of survival in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The Kaplan-Meier approach considers that patients discharged alive from hospital are 'non-informatively' censored (for instance, representative of all other individuals who have survived to that time but are still in hospital); this is probably wrong. Logistic models are adapted to this so-called 'competing risks' setting but fail to take into account censoring and differences in exposure time. To address these issues, we exemplified t

Does machine learning improve prediction accuracy of the Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy Success Score? A contemporary Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network cohort study.

PURPOSE: This Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (HCRN) study had two aims: (1) to compare the predictive performance of the original ETV Success Score (ETVSS) using logistic regression modeling with other newer machine learning models and (2) to assess whether inclusion of imaging variables improves prediction performance using machine learning models. METHODS: We identified children undergoing first-time ETV for hydrocephalus that were enrolled prospectively at HCRN sites between 200 and 2020. The primary outcome was ETV success 6 months after index surgery. The cohort was randomly div

Prediction models for postoperative delirium in elderly patients with machine-learning algorithms and SHapley Additive exPlanations.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common and severe complication in elderly patients with hip fractures. Identifying high-risk patients with POD can help improve the outcome of patients with hip fractures. We conducted a retrospective study on elderly patients (≥65 years of age) who underwent orthopedic surgery with hip fracture between January 2014 and August 2019. Conventional logistic regression and five machine-learning algorithms were used to construct prediction models of POD. A nomogram for POD prediction was built with the logistic regression method. Preoperatively predicting failure to achieve the minimum clinically important difference and substantial clinical benefit for total knee arthroplasty patients using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: A clear understanding of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and substantial clinical benefit (SCB) is essential for effectively implementing patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) as a performance measure for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Since not achieving MCID and SCB may reflect suboptimal surgical benefit, the primary aim of this study was to use machine learning to predict patients who may not achieve the threshold-based outcomes (i.e., MCID and SCB) on the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement (KOOS JR) following TKA. A coarsened multinomial regression model for perinatal mother to child transmission of HIV.

BACKGROUND: In trials designed to estimate rates of perinatal mother to child transmission of HIV, HIV assays are scheduled at multiple points in time. Still, infection status for some infants at some time points may be unknown, particularly when interim analyses are conducted. METHODS: Logistic regression models are commonly used to estimate covariate-adjusted transmission rates, but their methods for handling missing data may be inadequate. Here we propose using coarsened multinomial regression models to estimate cumulative and conditional rates of HIV transmission. Through simulation, we c
