Human health and snails.

Snails can provide a considerable variety of bioactive compounds for cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, useful for the development of new formulations with less toxicity and post effects compared to regular compounds used for the purpose. Compounds from crude extract, mucus, slime consist of glycans, polypeptides, proteins, etc., and can be used for curing diseases like viral lesions, warts, and different dermal problems. Some particular uses of snails involve treating post-traumatic stress. Micro RNA of Lymnaea stagnalis, was known to be responsible for the development of long-term memor

Retinoid receptor-based signaling plays a role in voltage-dependent inhibition of invertebrate voltage-gated Ca2+ channels.

The retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and retinoid X receptor (RXR) mediate the cellular effects of retinoids (derivatives of vitamin A). Both RAR and RXR signaling events are implicated in hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Furthermore, retinoids can interact with calcium signaling during homeostatic plasticity. We recently provided evidence that retinoids attenuate calcium current (ICa) through neuronal voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs). We now examined the possibility that constitutive activity of neuronal RXR and/or RAR alters calcium influx via the VGCCs. We found that in neurons of the mol

[Epidemiology of urinary schistosomiasis among school children in Péhunco area, Northern Benin. Malacological survey].

Schistosomiasis is a public health problem in Benin but prevalence estimates vary widely. Parasitological (from May to September 2010) and malacological surveys (from September 2010 to June 2012) were conducted to determine the current status of urinary schistosomiasis among 1 585 schoolchildren from 18 primary schools of Péhunco area, North-West Benin, using two parasitological tests. Pupils were enrolled with a mean age of 11 years (from 7 to 16 years-old age) and 51.48% of them were girls. Urines samples were examined using both urine reagent strips and filtration method. Structured questio

Community diversity reduces Schistosoma mansoni transmission, host pathology and human infection risk.

Global biodiversity loss and disease emergence are two of the most challenging issues confronting science and society. Recently, observed linkages between species-loss and vector-borne infections suggest that biodiversity may help reduce pathogenic infections in humans and wildlife, but the mechanisms underlying this relationship and its applicability to a broader range of pathogens have remained speculative. Here, we experimentally evaluated the effects of host community structure on transmission of the human pathogen, Schistosoma mansoni, which alternates between snail intermediate hosts and

[A focus study from a case of human fascioliasis in Neuquén].

An epidemiological focal study was performed in Loncopué, Neuquén, Argentina, in November 2002 to detect the origin of the infection in a human case of fascioliasis confirmed by an indirect-ELISA test, six months before the study. Thirty five individual fecal samples were taken from domestic livestock, and watercress plants and snails were collected from the irrigation ditches connected to a main canal in the surroundings of the patient's house. A new blood sample was taken from the already recovered patient. The patient was still seropositive to Fasciola hepatica antigens. No metacercariae we

GABA-like immunoreactivity in Biomphalaria: Colocalization with tyrosine hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity in the feeding motor systems of panpulmonate snails.

The simpler nervous systems of certain invertebrates provide opportunities to examine colocalized classical neurotransmitters in the context of identified neurons and well defined neural circuits. This study examined the distribution of γ-aminobutyric acid-like immunoreactivity (GABAli) in the nervous system of the panpulmonates Biomphalaria glabrata and Biomphalaria alexandrina, major intermediate hosts for intestinal schistosomiasis. GABAli neurons were localized in the cerebral, pedal, and buccal ganglia of each species. With the exception of a projection to the base of the tentacle, GABAli

Trematode infections in freshwater snails and cattle from the Kafue wetlands of Zambia during a period of highest cattle-water contact.

A total of 984 snails, comprising nine species, were collected from six areas in the Kafue wetlands between August and October 2003 to assess larval trematode infections. Of these, 135 (13.7%) were positive. Most trematode infections were recorded from Lymnaea natalensis (42.8%), which harboured four of the five morphologically different cercariae found. No trematodes were recovered from Bellamya capillata, Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Melanoides tuberculata, Physa acuta and Cleopatra nswendweensis. One snail (0.2%) of 416 Bulinus snails shed brevifurcate-apharyngeate distome cercariae while three

Evaluation of environmental methods to control snails in an irrigation system in Central Morocco.

The Moroccan Ministry of Public Health has launched a programme to eliminate schistosomiasis. One of the components in this process is the control of Bulinus truncatus, the intermediate host snail of Schistosoma haematobium. We evaluated three environmentally safe measures to control B. truncatus in siphon boxes, the main breeding sites for these snails in the Tessaout Amont irrigation system. The first method involved covering the siphon boxes to exclude light and reduce algal growth, the second consisted of increasing the frequency of emptying and cleaning the siphon boxes, and the third met

The occurrence of schistosomin, an antagonist of female gonadotropic hormones, is a general phenomenon in haemolymph of schistosome-infected freshwater snails.

In haemolymph of Lymnaea stagnalis, parasitized with the digenetic trematode parasite Trichobilharzia ocellata, a neuropeptide (schistosomin) occurs which antagonizes female gonadotropic hormones, e.g. calfluxin (CaFl). By means of an ultracytochemical hormone-assay, the CaFl assay, it was demonstrated that the occurrence of schistosomin is a general phenomenon in schistosome-infected freshwater snails. Haemolymph of the schistosomiasis-transmitting snail species Biomphalaria glabrata and B. pfeifferi, parasitized with Schistosoma mansoni, also appeared to contain an antagonizing factor, i.e.

Mitochondrial genome, nuclear ribosomal RNA gene, and morphological-tegumental analysis of dermatitis-causing cercariae: Trichobilharzia sp. from Thailand.

Avian blood flukes of the genus Trichobilharzia, the largest subgroup of the Schistosomatidae family, are of medical and veterinary importance as causative agents of avian schistosomiasis and human cercarial dermatitis. Despite their significance, molecular data on Trichobilharzia species from Southeast Asia remain limited, and no mitochondrial genomes have been reported to date. This study presents the first complete mitochondrial genome and nuclear ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene analysis of a Trichobilharzia sp. isolate (PYO) recovered from Radix (Lymnaea) rubiginosa in Phayao, Thailand, alongsid

Economic impact assessment of small ruminant fasciolosis in Nigeria using pooled prevalence obtained from literature and field epidemiological data.

Small ruminant fasciolosis (SRF) is a snail - borne disease, transmitted by tropical freshwater snail, Lymnaea (Radix) natalensis in Nigeria. Fasciolosis in small ruminants is often neglected and information on the prevalence and economic losses are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of SRF and provide estimated annual economic losses associated with the disease. Meta-analysis revealed pooled prevalence of 2.1% (95%CI: 0.0-5.8) in studies across Nigeria, while the distribution of L. natalensis was 13.2% (95%CI: 11.6-14.1) among collected snails. Approximately 29.4% li

Inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, a novel facet in the pleiotropic activities of snake venom phospholipases A2.

Phospholipases A2 represent the most abundant family of snake venom proteins. They manifest an array of biological activities, which is constantly expanding. We have recently shown that a protein bitanarin, isolated from the venom of the puff adder Bitis arietans and possessing high phospholipolytic activity, interacts with different types of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and with the acetylcholine-binding protein. To check if this property is characteristic to all venom phospholipases A2, we have studied the capability of these enzymes from other snakes to block the responses of Lymnaea s

Specific inhibitors of mitogen-activated protein kinase and PI3-K pathways impair immune responses by hemocytes of trematode intermediate host snails.

To characterize molecular mechanisms regulating snail cellular immune responses, the contributions of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K) were examined in hemocytes of the trematode intermediate host snails Biomphalaria glabrata and Lymnaea stagnalis. Simultaneous measurement of phagocytosis/encapsulation and H2O2 production by hemocytes in the presence or absence of specific signal transduction inhibitors was used to assess the role of extracellular-signal regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2), p38, JNK and PI3-K. Hemocyte spreading was significant

Family-level covariation between parasite resistance and mating system in a hermaphroditic freshwater snail.

Genetic compatibility, nonspecific defenses, and environmental effects determine parasite resistance. Host mating system (selfing vs. outcrossing) should be important for parasite resistance because it determines the segregation of alleles at the resistance loci and because inbreeding depression may hamper immune defenses. Individuals of a mixed mating hermaphroditic freshwater snail, Lymnaea ovata, are commonly infected by a digenetic trematode parasite, Echinoparyphium recurvatum. We examined covariation between quantitative resistance to novel parasites and mating system by exposing snail f

Changes in human fasciolosis in a temperate area: about some observations over a 28-year period in central France.

A retrospective study of 616 patients affected by fasciolosis was carried out to determine the numerical fluctuations of this disease over time, the recruitment of patients, and the modes of infection in a cattle-rearing area under a temperate climate (region of Limousin, central France). The annual number of patients showed irregular fluctuations between 1955 and 1987, after which it showed subsequent decreases until 1998. Before 1980, 66.3% of the persons under study were living in villages, whereas the others inhabited larger towns. An inverse relationship was noted after 1981: 80.8% of the

Reviewing lymnaeid vectors of fascioliasis by ribosomal DNA sequence analyses.

Snails of the family Lymnaeidae are of great parasitological importance due to the numerous helminth species they transmit, mainly trematodiases (such as fascioliasis) of considerable medical and veterinary impact. The present knowledge of the genetics and host-parasite relationships of this gastropod group is far from adequate. Fascioliasis is caused by two species, Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, which, as in the case of other trematodes, show a marked snail host specificity. Many lymnaeid species involved in fascioliasis transmission still show a confused systematic-taxonomic status. Th

Analysis of climatic data and forecast indices for human fascioliasis at very high altitude.

Human infection with Fasciola hepatica has recently been recognized as an important health problem worldwide, and particularly at very high altitudes in South America. The highest prevalences and intensities of human fascioliasis known are those of the northern Bolivian Altiplano, where infected Lymnaea truncatula occur at altitudes of 3800-4100 m. In the present study, the climatic data for this area of the Altiplano, which differ markedly from those of endemic areas in the lowlands, were analysed. There is no marked seasonality in temperature but there are large variations in temperature wit
