OBJECTIVES: To avoid unnecessary lymphadenectomy for renal cell cancer (RCC) in patients with retroperitoneal enlarged lymph nodes (ELNs).
METHODS: Frozen section examination (FSE) of ELNs was used to evaluate the lymphatic status. In the present study, 114 patients with RCC underwent FSE of ELNs and concurrent regional lymphadenectomy. Orthotopic implantation of a metastatic cell line of Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC-MLN), which was isolated by an in vivo selection method, resulted in greater metastatic growth in mediastinal lymph nodes as compared with that of the original LLC cells. We present the case of a 55-year-old white male with biopsy-proven left inguinal lymph node metastasis from differentiated papillary thyroid cancer. Inguinal node metastasis from papillary thyroid cancer is an extremely rare finding. The case demonstrates that papillary thyroid cancer is capable of metastasis presumably through the lymphatic system to unexpected locations.

METHODS: Single-cell RNA sequencing was performed on human primary melanoma and lymph node metastatic tissues.
