Machine Learning-Based Risk Stratification for Gestational Diabetes Management.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is often diagnosed during the last trimester of pregnancy, leaving only a short timeframe for intervention. However, appropriate assessment, management, and treatment have been shown to reduce the complications of GDM. This study introduces a machine learning-based stratification system for identifying patients at risk of exhibiting high blood glucose levels, based on daily blood glucose measurements and electronic health record (EHR) data from GDM patients. We internally trained and validated our model on a cohort of 1148 pregnancies at Oxford University Ho

Identification of sulfonamide-based butyrylcholinesterase inhibitors using machine learning.

Aim: This study reports the designing of BChE inhibitors through machine learning (ML), followed by in silico and in vitro evaluations. Methodology: ML technique was used to predict the virtual hit, and its derivatives were synthesized and characterized. The compounds were evaluated by using various in vitro tests and in silico methods. Results: The gradient boosting classifier predicted N-phenyl-4-(phenylsulfonamido) benzamide as an active BChE inhibitor. The derivatives of the inhibitor, i.e., compounds 34, 37 and 54 were potent BChE inhibitors and displayed blood-brain barrier permeability

Machine learning aided classification of tremor in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Tremors are frequent and disabling in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Characteristic tremor frequencies in MS have a broad distribution range (1-10 Hz), which confounds the diagnostic from other forms of tremors. In this study, we propose a classification method for distinguishing MS tremors from other forms of cerebellar tremors. METHODS: Electromyogram (EMG), accelerometer and clinical data were obtained from a total of 120 [40 MS, 41 essential tremor (ET) and 39 Parkinson's disease (PD)] subjects. The proposed method - Soft Decision Wavelet Decomposition (SDWD) - was used

Detecting Parkinson's Disease through Gait Measures Using Machine Learning.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common long-term degenerative movement disorders that affects the motor system. This progressive nervous system disorder affects nearly one million Americans, and more than 20,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. PD is a chronic and progressive painful neurological disorder and usually people with PD live 10 to 20 years after being diagnosed. PD is diagnosed based on the identification of motor signs of bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability. Though several attempts have been made to develop explicit diagnostic criteria, this is s

Central apnea detection in premature infants using machine learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Apnea of prematurity is one of the most common diagnosis in neonatal intensive care units. Apneas can be classified as central, obstructive or mixed. According to the current international standards, minimal fluctuations or absence of fluctuations in the chest impedance (CI) suggest a central apnea (CA). However, automatic detection of reduced CI fluctuations leads to a high number of central apnea-suspected events (CASEs), the majority being false alarms. We aim to improve automatic detection of CAs by using machine learning to optimize detection of CAs among CASEs.

Machine Learning Techniques for Hypoglycemia Prediction: Trends and Challenges.

(1) Background: the use of machine learning techniques for the purpose of anticipating hypoglycemia has increased considerably in the past few years. Hypoglycemia is the drop in blood glucose below critical levels in diabetic patients. This may cause loss of cognitive ability, seizures, and in extreme cases, death. In almost half of all the severe cases, hypoglycemia arrives unannounced and is essentially asymptomatic. The inability of a diabetic patient to anticipate and intervene the occurrence of a hypoglycemic event often results in crisis. Hence, the prediction of hypoglycemia is a vital

Machine Learning Algorithms to Detect Subclinical Keratoconus: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus is a disorder characterized by progressive thinning and distortion of the cornea. If detected at an early stage, corneal collagen cross-linking can prevent disease progression and further visual loss. Although advanced forms are easily detected, reliable identification of subclinical disease can be problematic. Several different machine learning algorithms have been used to improve the detection of subclinical keratoconus based on the analysis of multiple types of clinical measures, such as corneal imaging, aberrometry, or biomechanical measurements. OBJECTIVE: The aim

Machine learning and artificial intelligence: applications in healthcare epidemiology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the performance of tasks by machines ordinarily associated with human intelligence. Machine learning (ML) is a subtype of AI; it refers to the ability of computers to draw conclusions (ie, learn) from data without being directly programmed. ML builds from traditional statistical methods and has drawn significant interest in healthcare epidemiology due to its potential for improving disease prediction and patient care. This review provides an overview of ML in healthcare epidemiology and practical examples of ML tools used to support healthcare decision ma

ML-AdVInfect: A Machine-Learning Based Adenoviral Infection Predictor.

Adenoviruses (AdVs) constitute a diverse family with many pathogenic types that infect a broad range of hosts. Understanding the pathogenesis of adenoviral infections is not only clinically relevant but also important to elucidate the potential use of AdVs as vectors in therapeutic applications. For an adenoviral infection to occur, attachment of the viral ligand to a cellular receptor on the host organism is a prerequisite and, in this sense, it is a criterion to decide whether an adenoviral infection can potentially happen. The interaction between any virus and its corresponding host organis

Machine learning-based classification and diagnosis of clinical cardiomyopathies.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) are two common types of cardiomyopathies leading to heart failure. Accurate diagnostic classification of different types of cardiomyopathies is critical for precision medicine in clinical practice. In this study, we hypothesized that machine learning (ML) can be used as a novel diagnostic approach to analyze cardiac transcriptomic data for classifying clinical cardiomyopathies. RNA-Seq data of human left ventricle tissues were collected from 41 DCM patients, 47 ICM patients, and 49 nonfailure controls (NF) and tested using five ML

Predicting dairy cattle heat stress using machine learning techniques.

The objectives of the study were to use a heat stress scoring system to evaluate the severity of heat stress on dairy cows using different heat abatement techniques. The scoring system ranged from 1 to 4, where 1 = no heat stress; 2 = mild heat stress; 3 = severe heat stress; and 4 = moribund. The accuracy of the scoring system was then predicted using 3 machine learning techniques: logistic regression, Gaussian naïve Bayes, and random forest. To predict the accuracy of the scoring system, these techniques used factors including temperature-humidity index, respiration rate, lying time, lying b

Machine learning-driven electronic identifications of single pathogenic bacteria.

A rapid method for screening pathogens can revolutionize health care by enabling infection control through medication before symptom. Here we report on label-free single-cell identifications of clinically-important pathogenic bacteria by using a polymer-integrated low thickness-to-diameter aspect ratio pore and machine learning-driven resistive pulse analyses. A high-spatiotemporal resolution of this electrical sensor enabled to observe galvanotactic response intrinsic to the microbes during their translocation. We demonstrated discrimination of the cellular motility via signal pattern classif
