Patient reported quality of life and medication adherence in Fabry disease patients treated with migalastat: A prospective, multicenter study.

AIMS: Chaperone therapy with migalastat is a novel therapy option in Fabry disease (FD). In contrast to biweekly intravenous enzyme-replacement-therapy in a healthcare setting, oral delivery of migalastat every other day relies on the patient self-administration. Therapy adherence to migalastat and patient reported outcomes have not yet been studied in a real-world scenario. METHODS AND RESULTS: Prospective multicenter 'MigALastat Therapy Adherence among FABRY patients' (MALTA-FABRY) study examined therapy adherence and patient-reported outcomes including quality of life in FD-patients receiv

Multiple pregnancy in the Maltese population.

This study analyses the multiple birth statistics for the Maltese Islands since 1959. Hospital twin births delivering during the period of 1983-1985 are analysed for a number of variables. The incidence of multiple pregnancy for the Maltese Islands appears to have decreased slightly since 1959 with an overall rate of 10.21 per 1000 maternities. The ratio of dizygotic to monozygotic twinning was computed to be 1.64. Patients with multiple pregnancies are shown to be generally elderly and multiparous. The pregnancy outcome is more likely to be complicated by an operative delivery, while the infa

Can qPCR on pooled sheep milk detect brucellosis as part of herd brucellosis control and eradication programs?

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease occurring worldwide. Brucella melitensis is the main cause of malta fever in humans and a major cause of abortion in sheep. In herd control and prevention programs, applying a suitable noninvasive method for accurate, rapid, and cost-effective monitoring of infected animals is a major concern. This study aimed to investigate lots of pooled sheep milk using qPCR to detect Brucella spp. infection in sheep. By calculating the limit of detection of Brucella in qPCR and microbial culture, the maximum number of pooled milk lots that retained the ability

Global patterns and trends in ovarian cancer incidence: age, period and birth cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer (OC) is the seventh most common malignancy worldwide and the most lethal gynaecological malignancy. We aimed to explore global geographical patterns and temporal trends from 1973 to 2015 for 41 countries in OC incidence and especially to analyse the birth cohort effect to gain further insight into the underlying causal factors of OC and identify countries with increasing risk of OC. METHODS: OC data were drawn from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents databases and online databases published by governments. The joinpoint regression model was applied to detect cha

Risk of rabies introduction by non-commercial movement of pets.

In response to a Commission request, EFSA has carried out a quantitative assessment of the risk of rabies introduction into the UK, Ireland, Sweden, and Malta due to the movement of pets incubating rabies at the time of movement. The risk that a pet is incubating rabies at the time of first vaccination is equal to the prevalence of rabies-incubating pets in the population of origin. Following induction of protective immunity by vaccination, animals already incubating rabies will still develop clinical disease as a function of time after vaccination (termed type A risk). A waiting period will r

EUROCARE-3: survival of cancer patients diagnosed 1990-94--results and commentary.

EUROCARE-3 analysed the survival of 1815584 adult cancer patients diagnosed from 1990 to 1994 in 22 European countries. The results are reported in tables, one per cancer site, coded according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 classification. The main findings of the tables are summarised and commented on in this article. For most solid cancers, wide differences in survival between different European populations were found, as also reported by EUROCARE-1 and EUROCARE-2, despite a remarkable (10%) overall increase in cancer survival from 1985 to 1994. Survival was highest

Blood RNA signature RISK4LEP predicts leprosy years before clinical onset.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, is often late- or misdiagnosed leading to irreversible disabilities. Blood transcriptomic biomarkers that prospectively predict those who progress to leprosy (progressors) would allow early diagnosis, better treatment outcomes and facilitate interventions aimed at stopping bacterial transmission. To identify potential risk signatures of leprosy, we collected whole blood of household contacts (HC, n=5,352) of leprosy patients, including individuals who were diagnosed with leprosy 4-61 months after sample collectio
