Mandibular condyle fractures are one of the most common fractures of the mandible, and management of these injuries is controversial. Classically, these patients underwent closed treatment. However, there has been a trend to perform open repair of these fractures given the recent research suggesting improved outcomes after open reduction internal fixation. In this comprehensive review, the authors review the initial evaluation, classification systems, treatment options, surgical approaches, and decision making when treating mandibular condylar fractures.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Feline head trauma injuries are common in general practice, often resulting in mandibular fracture. An understanding of the recent advances in the field of mandibular fracture repair will facilitate evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Feline maxillofacial and oral anatomy brings unique challenges in comparison with dogs. It has been commonplace to adapt techniques and equipment that are better suited to other body regions or are species-inappropriate for use in feline maxillofacial surgery, and this has traditionally resulted in high

Trauma during childhood can have an extreme mental jolt on the minds of growing children. The fundamentals of treatment of jaw fractures vary among children and adults. In children, minimal manipulation of facial skeleton is necessary to rehabilitate the supporting bony framework to pre-trauma condition. The procedure should not only be non-intrusive but also cause minimum malfunction and aesthetic disability. The case report presents the successful management of a seven-year-old boy with mandibular symphysis fracture using an acrylic cap splint retained with circum-mandibular wiring.

Mechanical stress induces a variety of biochemical and morphological reactions in bone cell biology. This study aimed to investigate appropriate pressures of osteogenesis on the biological responses of 3-dimensional cultured human mandibular fracture haematoma-derived cells by compressive loading. Six patients with mandibular fractures who underwent open reduction and internal fixation were included in the study. During the operation, fracture haematomas that formed fibrin clots were manually removed before irrigation. First, pressures were applied to human mandibular fracture haematoma-derive

PURPOSE: Maxillofacial trauma is treated by two medical specialties, plastic surgery (PRS) and otolaryngology (ENT). Differences in training exposure and practice patterns exist between specialties, but their respective outcomes have never been compared.
METHODS: Mandible fracture data were reviewed from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program from 2005 to 2016. Demographics variables, repair types, and adverse outcomes were compared between PRS and ENT.
RESULTS: From 2005 to 2016, one thousand two hundred eighty-two cases were identified with 756 cases managed by ENT and 526 cases

The mandible is the most commonly fractured bone in the maxillofacial region following trauma. Severe infections are rare, and so we highlight an unusual presentation of Ludwig's angina following a late presentation of a mandibular fracture in a 68-year-old gentleman with significant medical co-morbidities. The recovery process was prolonged and involved multi-disciplinary input. This case makes a recommendation for early recognition of mandibular fractures, antibiotic therapy where appropriate, and hypervigilance when caring for patients with systemic illnesses.

A 74-year-old man presented with hemorrhage from the mandible after an injury caused by a 5 × 3 × 3-cm metal square column flying from a 45-ton press machine that struck the right side of his face. He is a known atrial fibrillation patient and is on rivaroxaban, a direct oral anticoagulant. An approximately 8-cm Y-shaped wound with persistent hemorrhage was observed in the right mandible, and the mandible was displaced between the right mandibular canine and first premolar. Although the patient showed no dyspnea, the sublingual region showed a slight dark purple swelling; fiberoptic nasal intu

INTRODUCTION: Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a rapid progressing and potentially fatal infection of connective tissues that spreads along the fascial planes. It commonly develops from odontogenic sources. In this article, the authors present a case of CNF which was developed after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of a mandibular fracture.
CLINICAL CASE: A 19-year-old male patient with no past medical history was admitted due to a mandibular fracture. Following ORIF surgery, on third post-operative day, Physical examination revealed extensive cervical swelling extending fro

PURPOSE: Fracture healing relies on the body to coordinate an inflammatory and anabolic reaction to re-establish osseous union. Although many factors affect this process or even disrupt it, the role of the body's nutritional reserves is not well understood. The purposes of this study were to describe the weight changes and to identify trends in laboratory values commonly used in nutritional assessment during mandibular fracture treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was designed. The study cohort included patients who sustained a mandibular fracture from September 1, 201

Biodynamics of mandibular angle fractures has been extensively discussed in the literature in search for the best way to fixate and expedite recovery of trauma patients. Pioneers like Michelet and Champy had the greatest impact on evolving of osteosynthesis in maxillofacial traumatology; they introduced their basic principles frequently used to describe the biomechanics of mandibular fixation. Their concept states when a physiologic load is applied on mandibular teeth a negative tension will be created at superior border and a positive pressure will appear at inferior border. These simple defi

Maxillofacial trauma is rare in children younger than the age of 5 years (range 0.6%-1.2%), and they can require different clinical treatment strategies compared with fractures in the adult population because of concerns regarding mandibular growth and development of dentition. A 5-year-old girl with a history of falling from a bicycle 7 hours earlier was referred to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Multislice computed tomographic examination demonstrated a bilateral fracture of the mandibular condyle neck associated with minimal fracture of the alveolar ridge of the maxilla.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the correlation of the miniplates' number used for fixation of single-compound symphyseal and parasymphyseal fractures with the osteosynthesis complications.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundred eighty-five patients having miniplate osteosynthesis complications participated in this study. They were classified into 3 groups according to the number of miniplates used for the fixation of the fractured segments. The first group included patients having 2 miniplates, whereas the second and third groups included patients having 4 miniplates and more than 4 minipl

OBJECTIVE: Extracranial vascular injuries of the head and neck are relatively underdiagnosed in patients with acute trauma and can carry devastating sequelae. We wished to identify the correlation between mandibular fractures and injuries to major vessels of the head and neck.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of our trauma registry was performed for the 1993-2007 period. The data on all mandibular fractures were collected.
RESULTS: A total of 2288 patients presented to Parkland Memorial Hospital with mandibular fractures, of whom 47 (2%) had an injury to a major vessel of the neck. Nearl

The authors describe a case of intra-articular fracture of the left mandibular condyle, successfully treated by the pumping technique in the upper and lower joint cavities, and show arthroscopic findings in these cavities. The patient was a 15-year-old boy whose maximum mouth opening was 30 mm. Computed tomography revealed a left intra-articular sagittal fracture of the condylar head. Aspiration of the hematoma in the upper and lower joint spaces was performed with ten pumping actions. In the upper and lower joint spaces, arthroscopic examination revealed the disappearance of the hematoma. The

Dog bites represent lesions commonly found in Hospital Emergency Clinic. This type of lesion may cause severe harm to patients, but it rarely affects the underlying bone structure causes facial fracture. This study aims to illustrate a rare clinical case in which a pediatric patient presented a comminuted fracture in the mandible which evolved into a unilateral avulsion of the mandibular condyle, body fractures as well as a mandibular ramus and hemiface that had been deformed, with multiple lacerations and loss of soft-tissue mass. Intermaxillary fixation was performed using the Ivy method, fo

BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, there has been a trend toward open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular condylar fractures. However, not all patients have fared well following the open surgical approach. A number of clinical parameters have been observed to be related to suboptimal treatment results on a long-term basis. A comprehensive investigation of the role of those risk factors is a worthwhile pursuit.
METHODS: A total of 23 surgically treated patients were enrolled in the study during an 11-year period. A retrospective chart review was conducted to collect clinical and

Fixation of mandibular fractures using rigid hardware has gained wide acceptance over the past 3 decades. The goal of rigid internal fixation is to allow for fracture healing with limited, or no, time in maxillo-mandibular fixation. There has been significant evolution in plate and screw materials and design over the past 30 years. The term miniplate is used to describe a fracture plate with a screw diameter of 2.0 mm or less. With correct diagnosis and understanding of the forces affecting mandible fractures, miniplates can be applied transorally in various situations, allowing for less invas
