Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a slow-growing, expansive, and benign fibro-osseous neoplasm that is rare in cattle. It mainly affects the craniofacial bones, especially the mandible. Here, we report 2 cases of mandibular OF in Nelore and mixed-breed steers with enlarged masses in the rostral portion of the mandible. Radiographic analysis of case 1 revealed an oval, lobed mass with the radiopacity of bone tissue that displaced the incisors laterodorsally. Histologically, both masses were composed of a proliferation of spindloid-to-stellate cells, supported by a dense fibrovascular stroma, with bony

Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) of the jaw is a rare neoplasm arising from the lining epithelium of odontogenic cysts or de novo from odontogenic epithelial rests that has no communication with the surrounding mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract. We present a case of PIOC ex-odontogenic keratocyst (PIOC ex-OKC) in a 35-year-old male. Histopathologic examination revealed a cystic lesion with a fibrous capsule lined by corrugated parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium resting on a basal cell layer composed of columnar cells exhibiting palisaded hyperchromatic nuclei, features c

Oral mucosal melanoma is rare and is reported to be more aggressive than cutaneous melanoma. The incidence of oral mucosal melanoma peaks at 41 to 60 years of age and the male to female ratio is 2 to 1. Preferred sites in the oral mucosa include the hard palate and maxillary alveolar crests. Risk factors have not been clearly identified, but melanotic pigmentation is present in one-third of patients prior to the diagnosis of melanoma. We report an unusual case of oral mucosal melanoma of the mandibular gingiva with the main characteristics of an in situ lesion and areas of superficial invasion

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the posterior mandible often requires marginal resection of the mandible in conventional surgery. However, the posterior location of the lesion can limit surgical visibility, which is critical for complete tumor removal and minimizing recurrence. Typically, marginal resection of the posterior mandible is achieved through a midline lower lip incision and mental nerve transection, providing adequate exposure but resulting in nerve damage, lip numbness, and facial scarring. In this paper, we describe a case using a submandibular incision for neck dissecti

INTRODUCTION: Tuberous sclerosis is a hamartoneoplastic syndrome, which may involve multiple organ systems. Oral hard tissue manifestations of the syndrome have been described in the literature only as recently as 1955. Patients who presented with clinical manifestations of tuberous sclerosis did not routinely undergo oral surveys to rule out 'lesions', and consequently data on 'lesions' in the maxillofacial complex is scant. Ten cases have been found in the English language literature, which describe maxillofacial 'lesions', which may be tumours, new growths, neoplasms or overgrowths occurrin

Mandibular condyle osteochondromas cause morphologic and functional disturbances. Multiple options exist for reconstructing the condylar segment following complete condylectomy. In this series, we describe 3 cases of mandibular condyle osteochondroma treated with complete condylectomy, orthognathic surgery, and a novel free ramus osteotomy graft. This is the first report to reconstruct the temporomandibular joint using a free ramus graft. Through this single-staged approach we were able to avoid recurrence, preserve function, and restore facial balance without a separate donor site or an allop

AIM: The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of plate-related complications after vascularized bony reconstruction of the mandible, comparing the plate type used.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2004 and December 2012, a total of 41 free osteocutaneous fibula flaps have been used in an equal number of patients for reconstruction of the mandible, at the Division of Maxillofacial surgery, San Giovanni Battista Hospital, University of Turin. Malignant pathology was the most common indication for segmental mandibulectomy.Patient outcomes were retrospectively evaluated with special

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is one of the most common benign odontogenic neoplasms. Its surgical excision has the potential to lead to postoperative malocclusion. In this case report, we describe the successful interdisciplinary orthodontic treatment of a patient with ameloblastoma who underwent marginal mandibulectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A woman of 20-year-old was diagnosed with ameloblastoma, and underwent marginal mandibulectomy when she was 8 years of age. She had an excessive overjet (11.5 mm) and a mild open bite (- 1.5 mm) with a severely resorbed atrophic edentulous ridge in the area ar

OBJECTIVES: Ameloblastoma (AB) are aggressive odontogenic tumors, often treated with wide marginal resection and concurrent reconstruction. Extended total temporomandibular joint replacement (eTMJR) prosthesis is a viable treatment option for reconstruction of large defects caused by resection of AB tumors. The objective of this study was to systematically review the utilization and effectiveness of eTMJR prosthesis in treating patients with AB tumors.
METHODS: A detail search in Web of Science, Medline/PubMed, Google Scholar and Embase identified studies reporting AB patients who underwent i

OBJECTIVES: To reveal the change patterns of the facial soft tissue after applying mandibular reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 16 Patients with mandibular benign tumor were recruited in this retrospective study. For all patients, segmental mandibular osteotomy and concurrent reconstruction using vascularized iliac flap were conducted. The soft tissue thickness of patients' lower face was measured with CT scans before surgery, 1 week, 6 months and 1 year after surgery. The time-dependent changes of tissue thickness were analyzed.
RESULTS: The most significant tissue swelling was 28.86%,

OBJECTIVES: Pseudarthrosis after mandibular reconstruction leads to chronic overload of the osteosynthesis and impedes dental rehabilitation. This study evaluates the impact of gap site on osseous union in mandible reconstruction using a new volumetric analysis method with repeated cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
METHODS: The degree of bone regeneration was evaluated in 16 patients after mandible reconstruction with a fibula free flap and patient-specific reconstruction plates. Percentual bone volume and width changes in intersegmental gaps were retrospectively analyzed using a baseline

Odontogenic myxofibroma is a benign odontogenic tumor of mesenchymal tissue that generally originates from the mandible. It is an extremely rare tumor accounting for approximately 2% of all odontogenic tumors. In this report, the authors presented a giant right mandibular mass that extends to the angle of the mandible and displacing the tongue laterally caused significant malocclusion, pain, and impaired oral intake. The tumoral involvement of the mandibula required a partial mandibulectomy with the resection of right mandibular ramus, body, and bilateral parasymphysis. Right mandibular condyl

INTRODUCTION: Guidelines for pediatric mandibular reconstruction (PMR) are not well-established. One must consider the growing craniofacial skeleton, mixed dentition, long-term dental occlusion, need for secondary reconstruction, and speech development. The traditional guideline (bone defect > 5 cm) for use of vascularized bone grafts (VBG) is not applicable given the variation of pediatric mandibular size and growth. We seek to propose a novel algorithm for PMR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An Institutional Review Board approved retrospective review of patients who underwent PMR for tumor resectio

Periostitis of the mandible has not been previously discussed in the otolaryngologic literature and only infrequently in the dental literature. It is characterized by a hard, painless, fixed mass overlying the mandible in a child or young adult. The etiology is usually an endosteal infection in the molar region with periosteal inflammation. Reactive new bone is deposited beneath the elevated periosteum, external to the outer cortex of the jaw, and separated from it by a layer of suppurative fluid. Treatment consists of removal of involved teeth and infected bone, drainage of the fluid pocked a

Three patients with hemophilic pseudotumors of the mandible were described and the treatment of the lesions was discussed. Surgical intervention, accompanied by adequate clotting factor replacement, was used in all three cases with satisfactory results. Pseudotumors of the jaws are a rare but serious complication of hemophilia. The cause of the mandibular lesion can be intraosseous hemorrhage, soft tissue hemorrhage with periosteal stripping and subperiosteal hematoma formation, or a combination of these factors. Surgical management with adequate replacement of clotting factor and the use of E
