Urethrographic Evaluation of Anatomic Findings and Complications after Perineal Masculinization and Phalloplasty in Transgender Patients.

Transgender patients seeking gender-affirming surgery are a growing population with unique health care needs. The radiologist must understand the challenges these patients face to facilitate a positive patient-physician interaction during the series of postoperative fluoroscopic evaluations. The authors present a standard two-stage surgical approach and common postoperative fluoroscopic findings after perineal masculinization and phalloplasty procedures. Perineal masculinization including urethral lengthening is performed first, followed by skin-flap-based phalloplasty. Patients undergo voidin

The contraceptive and reproductive history and planning goals of trans-masculine adults: a mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify factors associated with the reproductive planning of trans-masculine adults. STUDY DESIGN: Between 2015 and 2016, providers enrolled 150 trans-masculine adults in a sexual health study assessing sociodemographics, social support, gender affirmation, sexual partnering, and reproductive history and planning. A brief clinical interview assessed contraceptive use and concerns. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses examined associations between participant characteristics and three outcomes: current contraceptive use, lifetime pregnancy hi

Violent Boyhoods, Masculine Honor Ideology, and Political Violence: Survey Findings From Thailand.

Throughout history, those who have participated in political violence have predominantly been male young adults. At the same time, we know that most young men will not use violence for political protest. So what distinguishes those who do from those who do not? In this article, we link psychological research on the intergenerational effects of violence in the family to violence in the political arena. We ask to what extent experiences of violence as a child are associated with participation in political violence as an adult. Our overarching argument is that family-of-origin violence may not on

Thorax masculinization in a transsexual patient: Inferior pedicle mastectomy without an inverted T scar.

Transsexual individuals with gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder are rare, with a prevalence reported to range from 0.002% to 0.014%. Studies have shown that mastectomy yields significant improvements in body image and self-esteem in female-to-male transsexual patients. In patients with grade III breast ptosis, mastectomy with a nipple-areolar complex (NAC) graft is the most commonly used technique, although it has several disadvantages. In the case described herein, a bilateral mastectomy preserving the NAC in an inferior pedicle was performed. Additionally, a thin superior thoracic

Engendering healthy masculinities to prevent sexual violence: Rationale for and design of the Manhood 2.0 trial.

Violence against women and girls is an important global health concern. Numerous health organizations highlight engaging men and boys in preventing violence against women as a potentially impactful public health prevention strategy. Adapted from an international setting for use in the US, "Manhood 2.0" is a "gender transformative" program that involves challenging harmful gender and sexuality norms that foster violence against women while promoting bystander intervention (i.e., giving boys skills to interrupt abusive behaviors they witness among peers) to reduce the perpetration of sexual viol

Masculine Discrepancy Stress and Psychosocial Maladjustment: Implications for Behavioral and Mental Health of Adolescent Boys.

Gender role discrepancy (GRD), or nonconformity to socially prescribed gender roles, has been linked to a multitude of adverse mental and behavioral health outcomes. Masculine discrepancy stress (MDS), stress about being perceived not to conform to one's gender role, may explain the relationship between GRD and deleterious health outcomes. However, research on MDS has primarily been restricted to adult males. This leaves a critical gap pertaining to the potential effect of MDS on adolescent boys, who may be more malleable and susceptible to the influence and pressures of gender socialization.

Meta-analyses of the relationship between conformity to masculine norms and mental health-related outcomes.

Despite theoretical postulations that individuals' conformity to masculine norms is differentially related to mental health-related outcomes depending on a variety of contexts, there has not been any systematic synthesis of the empirical research on this topic. Therefore, the authors of this study conducted meta-analyses of the relationships between conformity to masculine norms (as measured by the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory-94 and other versions of this scale) and mental health-related outcomes using 78 samples and 19,453 participants. Conformity to masculine norms was modestly a

"It's not healthy and it's decidedly not masculine": a media analysis of UK newspaper representations of eating disorders in males.

OBJECTIVES: Recent qualitative research found young men reporting that an expectation that eating disorders (EDs) mainly affect young women led them, and others, to only recognise their symptoms when their ED had become entrenched. This raises questions about how these stereotypes persist. We therefore explored how EDs in males were represented in articles published in UK newspapers over a 10-year period (7.12.2002-7.12.2012), specifically attending to whether newsprint media represent EDs in males as 'gender appropriate', 'gender anomalous' or 'gender neutral'. DESIGN: A qualitative thematic

Prostaglandins, masculinization and its disorders: effects of fetal exposure of the rat to the cyclooxygenase inhibitor- indomethacin.

Recent studies have established that masculinization of the male reproductive tract is programmed by androgens in a critical fetal 'masculinization programming window' (MPW). What is peculiar to androgen action during this period is, however, unknown. Studies from 20 years ago in mice implicated prostaglandin (PG)-mediation of androgen-induced masculinization, but this has never been followed up. We therefore investigated if PGs might mediate androgen effects in the MPW by exposing pregnant rats to indomethacin (which blocks PG production by inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity) during this peri

Endocrine correlates of pregnancy in the ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta): implications for the masculinization of daughters.

Female ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) are Malagasy primates that are size monomorphic with males, socially dominate males, and exhibit a long, pendulous clitoris, channeled by the urethra. These masculine traits evoke certain attributes of female spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) and draw attention to the potential role of androgens in lemur sexual differentiation. Here, hormonal correlates of prenatal development were assessed to explore the possibility that maternal androgens may shape the masculine morphological and behavioral features of developing female lemurs. Maternal serum 17α-hydrox

External genital morphology of the ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta): females are naturally "masculinized".

The extravagance and diversity of external genitalia have been well characterized in male primates; however, much less is known about sex differences or variation in female form. Our study represents a departure from traditional investigations of primate reproductive anatomy because we 1) focus on external rather than internal genitalia, 2) measure both male and female structures, and 3) examine a strepsirrhine rather than an anthropoid primate. The subjects for morphological study were 21 reproductively intact, adult ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), including 10 females and 11 males, two of

Masculinized finger-length ratios of boys, but not girls, are associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Gonadal hormones may exert permanent organizational effects on sexually dimorphic finger-length ratios and sexually dimorphic behavior expressed in childhood attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study extended recent work examining associations between finger-length ratios (specifically, 2D:4D) and ADHD in a well-characterized, clinically diagnosed, community-recruited sample of boys and girls. A multistage, diagnostic procedure was utilized to identify 113 children with ADHD and 137 non-ADHD comparison children. Right-hand digit ratios showed significant mean differences by g

Gonadal hormones masculinize and defeminize reproductive behaviors during puberty in the male Syrian hamster.

Three experiments were conducted to test whether testicular hormones secreted during puberty masculinize and defeminize the expression of adult reproductive behavior. Experiment 1 tested the hypothesis that gonadal hormones during puberty masculinize behavioral responses to testosterone (T) in adulthood. Male hamsters were castrated either before puberty (noTduringP) or after puberty (TduringP). All males were implanted with a 2.5-mg T pellet 6 weeks following castration and tested once for masculine reproductive behavior 7 days after the onset of T replacement. TduringP males displayed signif

Local intracerebral implants of estrogen masculinize some aspects of the zebra finch song system.

The song system of zebra finches is sexually dimorphic: the volumes of the song control nuclei and the neurons within these nuclei are larger in males. The song system of hatchling female zebra finches is masculinized by systemic treatment with estrogen. We investigated the locus of this estrogen action by using microimplants of estradiol benzoate (EB). We implanted female zebra finch nestlings 10-13 days old with Silastic pellets containing approximately 2 micrograms EB at one of several sites: near the higher vocal center (HVC), in the brain distant from HVC, or in the periphery either under

Who is a mobile man 'at risk'? Masculinity, work-related mobility, and HIV-related risks in Uganda and South Africa.

Men who move for work (e.g., taxi drivers, fishermen, labourers) are often described as a homogeneous group at equal risk of HIV acquisition. This framing often masks important differences between men. Using data from rapid ethnographic assessments and a baseline survey in two settings in South Africa and one in Uganda, we examine how sexual risk- taking among men who travel frequently for work is shaped by mobility. We describe the different mobility patterns of men who are engaged in fishing, driving taxis and trucks and motorcycle-taxi riders, showing how these patterns interacted with repu

Understanding the Intersection Between Men's Alcohol Use, Masculinity and Perpetration of Intimate Partner Violence: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Male-to-female intimate partner violence (MFIPV) is a pervasive issue, with alcohol use and masculine norm endorsement identified as risk factors. However, research on how these two factors intersect with MFIPV perpetration is scarce. This review aims to understand if and how male alcohol use and masculinity intersect with MFIPV perpetration. A systematic search of Medline, PsycINFO, CINHAL, Global Health, and Web of Science was conducted. Papers underwent two levels of screening (title and abstract; full-text review) to determine eligibility, followed by methodological assessment and data ext

Blood and Blood: Anti-retroviral Therapy, Masculinity, and Redemption among Adolescent Boys in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Adolescents living with perinatally acquired HIV are among the first generation in South Africa to grow up with anti-retroviral therapy and democratic freedoms. In this article, we explore the biosocial lives of adolescent boys and young men living with HIV in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. We conducted qualitative research with 36 adolescent boys and young men in 2016-2018, including life history narratives, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of health facility files.
