AIMS: To test the hypothesis that local injection of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist ketamine would significantly attenuate glutamate-evoked masseter mechanical sensitization and muscle pain in healthy young women either taking oral contraceptives (W+OC) or not taking oral contraceptives (W-OC).
METHODS: Experimental pain was evoked in 47 healthy female subjects (W+OC, n=25; W-OC, n=22) by 2 injections of glutamate (0.2 mL, 1 mol/L) into the masseter muscle. A first injection of glutamate alone was followed by a second injection, 35 minutes later, of glutamate combined wit

BACKGROUND: This study assesses the ability of the masseter motor nerve-innervated microneurovascular muscle transfer to produce an effective smile in adult patients with bilateral and unilateral facial paralysis.
METHODS: The operation consists of a one-stage microneurovascular transfer of a portion of the gracilis muscle that is innervated with the masseter motor nerve. The muscle is inserted into the cheek and attached to the mouth to produce a smile. The outcomes assessed were the amount of movement of the transferred muscle; the aesthetic quality of the smile; the control, use, and spont

Exteroceptive suppression of the masseter, temporalis and trapezius muscles, produced by mental nerve stimulation, was studied in 46 patients with chronic headaches. The background contracting electromyographic activity prior to stimulation showed no difference between normal subjects and patients with any type of headache. In patients with chronic tension-type headache associated with a disorder of the pericranial muscles, the duration and degree of exteroceptive suppression were lower when compared with normal subjects. A low degree of exteroceptive suppression was observed also in patients

BACKGROUND: Temporal muscle thickness (TMT) has emerged as an imaging marker of skeletal muscle status and may be associated with cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its relationship with AD severity remains unclear, and the clinical relevance of masseter muscle thickness (MMT) is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations of TMT and MMT with cognitive function and disease severity in AD.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 242 patients with AD between December 2023 and April 2025. TMT and MMT were measured on axial T1-weighted MRI, cognitive function was ass

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether two-dimensional B-mode ultrasound radiomics of the masseter muscle can differentiate individuals with a clinically defined probable bruxism phenotype from those without clinical evidence of bruxism.
METHODS: Eighty-six participants were included: 44 with clinically defined probable bruxism and 42 without clinical evidence of bruxism. Bilateral masseter ultrasound images were obtained at rest and during clenching, yielding four images per participant and 344 manually segmented regions of interest. Two-dimensional radiomic features were extracted from calibrated

Subcutaneous tumors in the cheek region present a surgical challenge due to the complex anatomy involving the facial nerve and parotid duct. We report the case of a 72-year-old male with a soft, mobile mass in the left subcutaneous cheek. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined 3 cm lipomatous lesion situated between the parotid gland and the masseter muscle. The mass was hyperintense on T1- and T2-weighted images and hypointense on fat-suppressed T2-weighted imaging, consistent with a lipoma. The tumor was successfully excised en bloc using the high perimandibular approach, which i

This case report documents the clinical journey of a 14-year-old female child experiencing bilateral swelling and pain in the mandibular region, suggestive of idiopathic masseter muscle hypertrophy. This condition, although relatively uncommon, can present itself either unilaterally or bilaterally. While cosmetic concerns, often denoted as a "square face," are commonly expressed by patients, additional symptoms like protrusion, bruxism, or trismus may also be present. The patient reported a gradual and asymptomatic bilateral bulging in the mandible angle region, with an explicit complaint of p

In children, the quality and muscle function are altered in many pathologic conditions, including temporomandibular disorders. Although several methods have been used to evaluate muscle tonus, none became a golden standard. Moreover, the masseter muscle characteristics in children have not been investigated to date. This study aimed to measure the stiffness of the masseter muscle using shear-wave elastography in healthy children. We enrolled 30 healthy children (mean age 10.87 ± 3.38 years). The stiffness of masseter muscles was measured with shear wave elastography. Stiffness for the total sa

BACKGROUND: Chronic myalgia is associated with higher muscle levels of certain algesic biomarkers. The aim of this study was to investigate if hypertonic saline-induced jaw myalgia also leads to release of such biomarkers and if there were any sex differences in this respect.
METHODS: Healthy participants, 15 men and 15 aged-matched women (25.7 ± 4.3 years) participated. Intramuscular microdialysis into masseter muscles was performed to sample serotonin (5-HT), glutamate, lactate, pyruvate, glucose and glycerol. After 2 hours 0.2 mL hypertonic saline (58.5 mg/mL) was injected into the massete

INTRODUCTION: The masticatory muscles play an important part in determining the morphology of the facial skeleton. Skeletal typology and the characteristics of the masticatory muscles are closely linked. Several authors have studied muscle characteristics as related to facial typology. The aim of this work is to study the relationship between vertical and transverse skeletal dimensions and the dimensions (length, width and thickness) of two muscles of mastication, the masseter and the lateral pterygoid.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: Our study was based on CT-scan examinations of a sample composed of

This study evaluated whether surgical mandibular advancement procedures induced a change in the direction and the moment arms of the masseter (MAS) and medial pterygoid (MPM) muscles. Sixteen adults participated in this study. The sample was divided in two groups: Group I (n=8) with a mandibular plane angle (mpa) <39° and Group II (n=8) with an mpa >39°. Group I patients were treated with a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO). Those in Group II were treated with a BSSO combined with a Le Fort I osteotomy. Pre- and postoperative direction and moment arms of MAS and MPM were compared in th

We have created a new way of reanimating the face, involving transposition of the masseter muscle combined with tensor fascia lata, and using the zygomatic arch as a trochlea to reconstruct the inferior facial paralysis. We used it on five patients who had facial palsy after excision of malignant parotid tumours. The wide skin defect that exposed the masseter muscle after total parotidectomy was reconstructed with a free flap. This method differs from those of other methods of transposing the masseter muscle in that force is applied at an upper lateral angle. Our method provided dynamic raisin

OBJECTIVE: To establish a new rat model of craniofacial myalgia, and to clarify which central nervous system pathways are activated in the model.
BACKGROUND: Craniofacial myalgia, represented by myogenous temporomandibular disorder and tension-type headache with pericranial tenderness, is more common in female patients. The pain is thought to be a type of multifactorial disorder with several coexisting causes. To our knowledge, there are no models of craniofacial muscle hyperalgesia caused by multiple types of stimuli.
METHODS: We injected nerve growth factor into the trapezius muscle of fem

BACKGROUND: The masseter muscle-a surrogate of systemic muscle mass and quality-has been linked to dysphagia and mortality in oncology, but evidence in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is limited. Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), via oxidative stress and inflammation, may contribute. We investigated the prognostic value of masseter status in AIS, its relation to dysphagia, and association with SVD.
METHODS: Consecutive AIS patients admitted between January 2022 and March 2024 within one week of onset were screened. Unfavorable outcome was defined as mRS 3-6 at 3 months. On contrast-enhanced CT
