Conservative management of temporomandibular dysfunction: A literature review with implications for clinical practice guidelines (Narrative review part 2).

The effective management of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) requires a thorough understanding of the pathoanatomic factors that drive the underlying condition. After reviewing the etiology associated with TMD in Part 1 of this narrative review, the temporomandibular joint capsule, articular disc and muscles of mastication emerged as key players. (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbmt.2017.05.017) Part 2 focuses on conservative treatment strategies best able to reduce the pain and disability associated with TMD. A review of the literature revealed limited support of strengthening exercises

Aquaporin-5 Protein Is Selectively Reduced in Rat Parotid Glands under Conditions of Fasting or a Liquid Diet.

Aquaporin-5 (AQP5) water channel, transmembrane protein 16A (TMEM16A) Ca2+-activated Cl- channel, and Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC1) are membrane proteins on salivary gland acinar cells that function in watery saliva secretion. We examined their expression changes in rat parotid glands under reduced mastication. Rats were either fed regular chow as a control group, fasted for 48 hr or fed a liquid diet for 48 hr or 1 week to reduce mastication. The parotid glands were then resected to analyze the protein and mRNA levels by immunofluorescence, immunoblotting, and reverse-transcription quanti

Assessing Prevalence and Characteristics of Oro-bulbar Involvement in Children and Adults with SMA Type 2 and 3 Using a Multimodal Approach.

Bulbar and jaw muscles are impaired in patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) but the assessment of their severity and progression are limited by the lack of age-appropriate and disease-specific measures. We investigated mastication and swallowing in children and adults with SMA, sitters and walkers. In a 2-year multicentre cross-sectional prospective study, lip and tongue strength (Iowa Oral Performance Instrument), chewing and swallowing (Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids), active mouth opening (aMMO) were compared to age-appropriate normative data. The perceived burden of oro-b

Quantitative analysis of nycterohemeral eating and ruminating patterns in heifers with different voluntary intakes and effects of monensin.

The nycterohemeral pattern of eating and ruminating behavior was examined in six heifers given ad libitum access to a corn silage-based diet with or without 100 mg monensin.hd-1.d-1 in a two-period crossover design. Rhythm components (no. of cycles/24 h) were characterized by the finite Fourier transform of 24-h mastication activities series measured over 7 d. Analysis of variance of the daily mean of hourly activities and rhythm components 1 to 12 showed significant effects of heifer (H), monensin treatment (T), period (P) and T x P x H interactions. A reparameterization of the finite Fourier

Interrelationships among voluntary intake, eating and ruminating behavior and ruminal motility of heifers fed corn silage.

Six heifers (1/4 Brahman X 1/4 Jersey X 1/2 Angus, 290 kg average weight) with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulae given ad libitum access to corn silage with or without 100 mg monensin X head-1 were used to determine interrelationships among behavior, ruminal motility and intake. Voluntary intake was positively related (P less than .001) to eating time, duration of the main morning meal and daily mastication time. Intake was negatively related to unitary times [min X g dry matter-1 X (kg body weight X 75)-1] of eating (P less than .05), rumination (P less than .001), mastication (P less than

Facial skeletal growth in growing "toothless" osteopetrotic (op/op) mice: radiographic findings.

The defective bone resorption in the osteopetrotic (op/op) mouse brings about failure of tooth eruption. Furthermore, the op/op mouse has been studied as a "toothless" mouse in recent morphological and physiological investigations of the relationship between mastication and masseter muscle development. The present study was conducted to examine in detail the nasal bone and the premaxillary bone in this mutant mouse and to assess the roles of incisor growth and the mechanical stress of mastication in nasal bone and premaxillary bone growth. The forms of the nasal bone and the premaxillary bone
