Effect of Botulinum Toxin Injection on EMG Activity and Bite Force in Masticatory Muscle Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is increasingly used in treating masticatory muscle pain disorder; however, safe doses and reinjection intervals still need to be established. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the degree and duration of the impairment of masticatory muscle performance. Fifty-seven subjects were randomly divided into two groups: one of which received BoNT-A first (n = 28) while the other received saline first (n = 29), with the cross-over being in week 16, and a total follow-up period of 32 weeks. A total dose of 50 U of BoNT-A was injected in the mas

Beneficial effects of benzodiazepine on masticatory muscle dysfunction induced by chronic stress and occlusal instability in an experimental animal study.

Psychological stress and occlusal alteration are important etiologic factors for temporomandibular/masticatory muscular disorders. In particular, the exact physiologic mechanism underlying the relation by occlusal alteration and temporomandibular disorders remains unclear. Our purpose was to test the hypothesis that benzodiazepine therapy is able to prevent metabolic and vascular changes in the medial pterygoid muscle of rats under chronic stress after 14 days of unilateral exodontia. Adult Wistar rats were submitted to unpredictable chronic mild stress (10 days) and/or unilateral exodontia an

A two-year follow-up of surgical and non-surgical treatments in patients with masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia.

This study re-examined the usefulness of surgery for the management of masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia (MMTAH) through a comparison of the outcomes between patients who underwent surgery and those who did not. The duration of follow-up was 2 years. Twenty-eight patients who attended the study hospital and were given a diagnosis of MMTAH were included. Nineteen patients underwent surgery (surgical group) and nine patients were instructed to open their mouths wide once a day and did not undergo surgery (non-surgical group). Maximum mouth opening, impairment of daily activities,

Possible difficult laryngoscopy caused by masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia: we anesthesiologists should be aware of this disease.

Masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia (MMTAH) is a new disease entity characterized by limited mouth opening due to contracture of the masticatory muscles resulting from hyperplasia of tendons and aponeuroses. The other clinical feature is that the face of the patient with this disease displays a square mandible configuration. Muscle relaxants provide no relief for the limited mouth-opening ability. Anesthesiologists need to suspect difficult airway when patients have limited mouth opening with square mandible configuration. MMTAH can therefore be a possible cause of difficult intu

Long-term results of surgical therapy for masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia accompanied by limited mouth opening.

Masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia is a new disease entity characterized by limited mouth opening due to contracture of the masticatory muscles, resulting from hyperplasia of tendons and aponeuroses. In the case of masseter muscle type, the face displays a square mandible configuration. Pharmacotherapy, occlusal splints and physical therapy are ineffective. This study evaluated the long-term results of aponeurectomy of the masseter muscle with coronoidectomy to release the temporal muscle tendon. The subjects were 10 patients who underwent surgery between 2000 and 2005. Mean max

Is There a Correlation Between Masticatory Muscle Thickness and Pain After Botulinum Toxin Injections in Myogenic TMD Patients?: A Pilot Study.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), a potent neurotoxin, is increasingly used to treat myogenic temporomandibular disorders (TMDs); however, the interplay between muscle atrophy and pain relief remains incompletely understood. This pilot study investigated how masseter and temporalis muscle thickness and pain intensity change over 12 weeks following BoNT-A injections in 15 patients (mean age 51.42 years) with myogenic TMD. Muscle thickness was measured via ultrasonography across multiple anatomical positions under both clenching and resting conditions at baseline and at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks post
