Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of fetal maxillary sinuses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The growth of maxillary sinus is closely connected to the development of facial structures. However, its definition and reference standards on fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have not been analyzed so far. In this study, the objectives were to define and evaluate the fetal maxillary sinus (fMS) formation with MRI. METHODS: We reviewed T2-weighted coronal MRI images of 75 fetuses. The MRI features, time of appearance, and boundaries of fMS were defined. Craniocaudal and transverse diameters of both maxillary sinuses and bone biparietal diameters were measured a

Microbiology of acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis in smokers and nonsmokers.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the microbiology of sinus aspirates of smokers and nonsmokers with acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis. METHODS: Cultures were obtained from 458 patients, 244 (87 smokers and 157 nonsmokers) of whom had acute maxillary sinusitis and 214 (84 smokers and 130 nonsmokers) of whom had chronic maxillary sinusitis, between 2001 and 2007. RESULTS: A greater number of Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA), and beta-lactamase-producing bacteria (BLPB) were found in the 87 smokers with acute sinusitis than in the nonsmokers with acute sinusitis (p < 0.0

Maxillary sinuses microbiology from patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

UNLABELLED: There isn't definitive and consistent data concerning the distribution of bacterial species in patients with Chronic Sinusitis (CS). The variability of the results from studies in CS may be due to the different techniques used as collection method, variations in culture methods, previous antibiotic use, and difficulty in distinguishing bacterial flora from pathogenic agents. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical prospective. AIM: To identify the incidence of microorganisms in patients with CRS by growing bacteria from the secretion of the maxillary sinus. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional

Not everything in the maxillary sinus is sinusitis: a case of a dentigerous cyst.

A 4-year-old girl presented to a medical clinic with a painless right facial swelling. The treating physician ordered a radiograph of the sinuses and received a report of "maxillary sinusitis." After appropriate antibiotic treatment, the facial swelling increased, and the mother took the child to her community pediatrician. After a period of observation and additional imaging, the diagnosis of dentigerous cyst was made. After appropriate surgical intervention, the cyst was removed, and over the ensuing 6 weeks the facial swelling gradually diminished. Dentigerous cysts, although uncommon, need

Maxillary sinusitis as an indicator of respiratory health in past populations.

Chronic infectious respiratory disease in a past human population is investigated through the quantification of maxillary sinusitis among Iroquoian horticulturists. Three hundred forty-eight right and left maxillae of a Southern Ontario Iroquoian skeletal sample, Uxbridge Ossuary, ca. AD 1440, were examined for evidence of chronic infection (minimum number of individuals = 207: 114 adults, 22 adolescents, 38 juveniles and 33 infants). Modern clinical criteria were applied to differentiate lesions of respiratory and dental origin. Osseous lesions of the maxillary sinuses were observed in 50% of

A-mode diagnostic ultrasound of maxillary sinuses: possibilities and limitations.

The diagnostic possibilities and limitations of A-mode ultrasound of maxillary sinus diseases are presented. A group of 219 subjects suffering from various sinus diseases was examined. All cases were analyzed in parallel by means of X-rays, sinoscopy and ultrasonography. The investigated group was divided into seven subgroups, according to clinical entity (polypoid degeneration, polyps, cysts, et cetera). The comparison of the three techniques was made for each clinical entity. Some divergent findings that can be reached by these techniques were explained from the clinical point of view as wel

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 4A: Maxillary sinuses.

The maxillary sinus is frequently involved by inflammatory change. It is also the sinus that is most affected by intrinsic or nearby neoplasms. Since neoplasia and inflammatory disease may mimic each other, radiologic examination often becomes the principal means of differentiating them. Principles of radiologic diagnosis, with attention to changes in the various bony margins in maxillary disease processes, form the basis of this article.

A pharmacokinetic study of bacampicillin in patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis.

The penetration of ampicillin into sinus mucosa and secretion after oral bacampicillin was studied in 30 patients subjected to radical maxillary sinus surgery. Bacampicillin in a dose of 1200 mg was administered orally before the operation and the concentrations in serum, sinus mucosa and secretion were assayed. The mean serum concentration (+/- SEM) reached its maximum of 13.4 +/- 1.2 micrograms/ml in about one hour. The mean concentrations in the secretion and mucosa after two to five hours were 1.6 +/- 0.5 micrograms/ml and 1.6 +/- 0.4 micrograms/ml respectively. The clinical course of the

Bacteriology of maxillary sinusitis in relation to quality of the retained secretion.

The bacteriological findings in 200 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis are reported. It is concluded that the sampling technique--by antral aspiration--is highly significant in the evaluation of the bacteriological background of sinusitis, whereas the anerobic transport of the sample seems to be of less importance. By aspiration the purulent secretion can be properly separated from the non-purulent secretion. Pneumococci, H. influenzae and anaerobic bacteria can be isolated in about 90% of the patients with true sinus empyema, while sterile conditions are rare.

A case of Kartagener's syndrome with combined aplasia of frontal and sphenoid sinuses and hypoplasia of maxillary and ethmoid sinuses.

Kartagener's syndrome (KS), characterized by a triad of bronchiectasis, chronic sinusitis, and situs inversus, is a subset of an autosomal recessive hereditary disorder of primary ciliary dyskinesia. We report the case of a 35-year-old male who presented with a history of intermittent episodes of productive cough, breathlessness, and cold since childhood. High resolution computed tomography of chest revealed bronchiectatic changes, dextrocardia, and right-sided aortic arch. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen revealed situs inversus. CT of the paranasal sinuses revealed combined aplas

Unique canal communicating between both maxillary sinuses through the palatine recess with hypertrophy of sinuses.

The result of an inappropriate growth of the jaws is in many cases related to abnormalities in the rest of the facial skeleton. We present a 21-year-old patient with a possibly unique anomaly of the maxillary sinus in skeletal class III dentofacial deformity. This anatomical variant has not to our knowledge been previously reported and all clinicians should be aware of it. It presented not only as hypertrophy of the sinuses but also as a communication between the two maxillary sinuses, and might be associated with a severe III class deformity with an extremely narrow maxilla. We describe this

Single-visit nonsurgical endodontic treatment of maxillary sinusitis: A case series.

The etiopathology of maxillary sinusitis of dental origin (MSDO) is well established, and chronic apical periodontitis is the second most common cause of all dental-induced sinusitis incidents. The literature presents no common treatment protocols for MSDO and very few studies address the impact of root canal treatment (RCT) in its management. The literature presents cases of maxillary sinusitis resolution after performing a multivisit nonsurgical endodontic treatment, yet none described complete healing of MSDO as a result of single-visit nonsurgical RCT. This paper reports a case series of m

Role of modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy in persistent chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Introduction Functional endoscopic sinus surgery has a long-term high rate of success for symptomatic improvement in patients with medically refractory chronic rhinosinusitis. As the popularity of the technique continues to grow, however, so does the population of patients with postsurgical persistent sinus disease, especially in those with a large window for ventilation and drainage. In addition, chronic infections of the sinuses especially fungal sinusitis have a higher incidence of recurrence even though a wide maxillary ostium had been performed earlier. This subset of patients often repre

[Observation on ultrastructure of maxillary sinus mucosa in experimental acute sinusitis].

OBJECTIVE: To observe ultrastructure of maxillary sinus mucosa of experimental acute sinusitis in rabbits. METHOD: Twenty-five rabbits were randomly divided into experimental group (20 rabbits) and blank control group (5 rabbits). We established a rhinogenic model of experimental acute sinusitis in experimental group. Five rabbits chosen randomly in experimental group were sacrificed and dissected after 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks, and the tissue (0.3 cm x 0.3 cm) of sinus mucosa were prepared for visualization by transmission electron microscope (TEM). Animals in blank control group were sacrificed

In a 48-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, a sinusitis maxillaris resulting from overextension of root canal filling material after an endodontic treatment ofa maxillary molar could be diagnosed through computed tomography. The woman complained of nasal congestion and in the man 2 radiopaque abnormalities in the maxillary sinus were discovered coincidentally. The corpora aliena were removed surgically. Root canal filling materials containing zinc oxide or hydrocortisone may cause aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus because they encountergrowth of Aspergillus species. In case ofmaxillary si
