Exercise breathing pattern during chronic altitude exposure.

Breathing pattern in response to maximal exercise was examined in four subjects during a 7-day acclimatisation to a simulated altitude of 4247 m (barometric pressure, PB = 59.5 kPa). Graded exercise tests to exhaustion were performed during normoxia (day 0), and on days 2 and 7 of hypoxia, respectively. Ventilation was significantly augmented in the hypoxic environment, as were both the mean inspiratory flow (VT/TI) and inspiratory duty cycle (TI/TTOT) components of it. VI/TI was increased due to a significant increase in tidal volume (VT) and a corresponding decrease in inspiratory time durat

A Comparative Study of Pulmonary Function Tests in Recreational Swimmers, Recreational Runners, and Sedentary Healthy Male Adults.

BACKGROUND: Regular aerobic exercise is associated with variations in pulmonary function through adaptations in respiratory muscles, lung volumes, and ventilatory efficiency. Swimming and running are commonly practiced aerobic activities that show differences in their physiological and mechanical characteristics related to respiration. However, limited data are available comparing pulmonary function among recreational swimmers, recreational runners, and sedentary individuals within a narrow age group. OBJECTIVES: To compare pulmonary function tests among recreational swimmers, recreational ru

Acute chest syndrome, airway inflammation and lung function in sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is an acute complication in SCD but its effects on lung function are not well understood. Inflammation is a key component of SCD pathophysiology but with an unclear association with lung function. We hypothesized that children with ACS had worse lung function than children without ACS and aimed to investigate the association of lung function deficits with inflammatory cytokines. METHODS: Patients enrolled in a previous 2-year randomized clinical trial who had consented to future data use, were enrolled for the present exploratory study. Patients were cat

Prediction of pneumoconiosis by serum and urinary biomarkers in workers exposed to asbestos-contaminated minerals.

Workers processing nephrite, antigorite, or talc may be exposed to paragenetic asbestos minerals. An effective screening method for pneumoconiosis in workers exposed to asbestos-contaminated minerals is still lacking. The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of serum and urinary biomarkers for pneumoconiosis in workers exposed to asbestos-contaminated minerals. We conducted a case-control study in a cohort of stone craft workers in Hualien, where asbestos, nephrite, antigorite, and talc are produced. A total of 140 subjects were screened between March 2013 and July 201

Impact of chronic systolic heart failure on lung structure-function relationships in large airways.

Heart failure (HF) is often associated with pulmonary congestion, reduced lung function, abnormal gas exchange, and dyspnea. We tested whether pulmonary congestion is associated with expanded vascular beds or an actual increase in extravascular lung water (EVLW) and how airway caliber is affected in stable HF Subsequently we assessed the influence of an inhaled short acting beta agonist (SABA). Thirty-one HF (7F; age, 62 ± 11 years; ht. 175 ± 9 cm; wt. 91 ± 17 kg; LVEF, 28 ± 15%) and 29 controls (11F; age; 56 ± 11 years; ht. 174 ± 8 cm; wt. 77 ± 14 kg) completed the study. Airway hyperreactivity in children with sickle cell disease.

Progressive restrictive defect with increasing age, obstructive lung disease, and bronchodilator responsiveness have been reported in sickle cell disease (SCD). Because airway hyperreactivity (AHR) can be underestimated when assessed by bronchodilator responsiveness in patients with normal baseline lung function, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of AHR in SCD by cold-air bronchial provocation testing, and to assess whether AHR can be present in symptom-free patients with SCD. Forty patients aged 6 to 19 years (mean, 10.7 years +/- 3.5 SD) performed pulmonary function tes

Impact of Volume-Oriented Incentive Spirometry on Lung Volume and Peak Expiratory Flow Rate in Patients With Tracheostomy.

Background The volume-oriented incentive spirometer is a specialized device designed to facilitate maximal inspiration, promote deep breathing exercises, and enhance lung function. The use of spirometry is challenging and not proven in patients with tracheostomy. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the impact of volume-oriented incentive spirometry on lung volume and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) in patients with tracheostomy. Methodology All adult patients with cuffed tracheostomy tubes with a Medical Research Council (MRC) score of more than 48 were studied. Volume-oriented incentive sp

[Suspended particulates and lung health].

Based on several severe air pollution episodes, a temporal correlation between high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and SO2 pollution and acute increases in respiratory and cardiopulmonary mortality had been established in Vienna for the 1970's. After air pollution had decreased in Austria in the 1980's--as documented by data on SO2, and total suspended particles (TSP)--no such associations between day-to-day changes of SO2 and TSP and mortality have been documented any more, however, traffic related pollutants like fine particles and NO2 remained a problem. Therefore, short term eff

Effect of high-flow nasal therapy during exercise training in COPD patients with chronic respiratory failure: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in symptomatic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is well known. However, advanced patients with chronic respiratory failure (CRF), a category excluded from most studies, are frequently unable to sustain a work-load sufficiently high to obtain the full benefit of PR on exercise tolerance. Recent studies involving heated and humidified high flow oxygen therapy (HFOT) showed positive effects on breathing pattern and ventilatory efficiency during effort. We thus plan to compare, in COPD patients with CRF undergoing a high-intensit

Morphometric Analysis of Explant Lungs in Cystic Fibrosis.

RATIONALE: After repeated cycles of lung infection and inflammation, patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) evolve to respiratory insufficiency. Although histology and imaging have provided descriptive information, a thorough morphometric analysis of end-stage CF lung disease is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the involvement of small and large airways in end-stage CF. METHODS: Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and micro-CT were applied to 11 air-inflated CF explanted lungs and 7 control lungs to measure, count, and describe the airway and parenchymal abnormalities in end-stage CF lungs.

Pulmonary involvement in systemic sclerosis: can sex play a role?

OBJECTIVES: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare and complex autoimmune disease with significant complications. During the past few years, research interest has focused on the differences between female and male patients. However, there is a lack of data regarding the role of sex in the presence of small airway disease (SAD). Therefore, we aimed to investigate the impact of sex on pulmonary involvement in a cohort of SSc patients, focusing primarily on small airways. METHODS: For this retrospective study, consecutive patients with a diagnosis of SSc that visited our department up to January 202

Noncholinergic airway constriction: role of axon reflex and oxygen radicals.

In the airways and lungs, activated afferent C-fibers release tachykinins, which induce noncholinergic bronchoconstriction. We have, for several years, focused our research on the role of axon reflex and oxygen radicals in noncholinergic airway constriction in guinea pigs. In this species, the noncholinergic bronchial constriction is not affected by administration of a ganglionic blocking agent, chlorisondamine, indicating that only the afferent C-fiber, not a complete reflex arc, is required for this constriction. Accordingly, we investigated the role of axon reflex by using tetrodotoxin (TTX
