Electrical stimulation mapping in the medial prefrontal cortex induced auditory hallucinations of episodic memory: A case report.

It has been well documented that the auditory system in the superior temporal cortex is responsible for processing basic auditory sound features, such as sound frequency and intensity, while the prefrontal cortex is involved in higher-order auditory functions, such as language processing and auditory episodic memory. The temporal auditory cortex has vast forward anatomical projections to the prefrontal auditory cortex, connecting with the lateral, medial, and orbital parts of the prefrontal cortex. The connections between the auditory cortex and the prefrontal cortex thus help in localizing, r

Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Episodic Memory in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: Episodic memory is impaired in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), which is posited as a potential prodromal form of Alzheimer's disease. Reactivated existing memories become sensitive to modification during reconsolidation. There is evidence that the lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays causal role in episodic memory reconsolidation. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the PFC after a contextual reminder enhanced episodic memory performance up to 1 month, conceivably through reconsolidation, in older adults with subjective memory complaints, a conditi

Association between increased levels of amyloid-β oligomers in plasma and episodic memory loss in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to investigate whether the plasma levels of oligomeric amyloid-β (OAβ) were affected in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to examine the associations (or possible correlations) between plasma OAβ levels and memory performance. METHOD: Thirty subjects with AD and 28 cognitively normal controls were recruited in the study. The multimer detection system (MDS) was used to measure the levels of OAβ in the plasma. In addition to assessing the general cognitive function with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument (CA

Episodic Prenatal Exposure To Ethanol Affects Postnatal Neurogenesis In The Macaque Dentate Gyrus And Visual Recognition Memory.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a prime cause of cognitive dysfunction. The present study tested the hypotheses (a) that gestational ethanol exposure results in deficits in hippocampal-related behaviors and associated neurogenesis and (b) that the period of gastrulation is a time of vulnerability. Pregnant macaques were intubated with ethanol or saline once per week for 3, 6, or 24 weeks. Exposures included or omitted the period of gastrulation. Offspring were given behavioral tests including a Visual-Paired Comparison (VPC), a hippocampal-associated memory task, and euthanized as adolescents.

Shared processes resolve competition within and between episodic and semantic memory: Evidence from patients with LIFG lesions.

Semantic cognition is supported by two interactive components: semantic representations and mechanisms that regulate retrieval (cf. 'semantic control'). Neuropsychological studies have revealed a clear dissociation between semantic and episodic memory. This study explores if the same dissociation holds for control processes that act on episodic and semantic memory, or whether both types of long-term memory are supported by the same executive mechanisms. We addressed this question in a case-series of semantic aphasic patients who had difficulty retrieving both verbal and non-verbal conceptual i

Differential Medial Temporal Lobe and Parietal Cortical Contributions to Real-world Autobiographical Episodic and Autobiographical Semantic Memory.

Autobiographical remembering can depend on two forms of memory: episodic (event) memory and autobiographical semantic memory (remembering personally relevant semantic knowledge, independent of recalling a specific experience). There is debate about the degree to which the neural signals that support episodic recollection relate to or build upon autobiographical semantic remembering. Pooling data from two fMRI studies of memory for real-world personal events, we investigated whether medial temporal lobe (MTL) and parietal subregions contribute to autobiographical episodic and semantic rememberi

Why does saccade execution increase episodic memory retrieval? A test of the top-down attentional control hypothesis.

Making repetitive saccadic eye movements has been found to increase subsequent episodic memory retrieval and also to increase subsequent top-down attentional control. We theorise that these effects are related such that saccade-induced changes in attentional processing facilitate memory retrieval. We tested this idea by examining the effect of saccade execution on retrieval conditions that differed in relative ease of consciously accessing episodic memories. Based on recent theories of episodic retrieval, we reasoned that there is a larger role for top-down attention when memories are more dif

A trade-off between feedback-based learning and episodic memory for feedback events: evidence from Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by a loss of dopaminergic projections to the striatum, leading to both motor and cognitive impairments. The cognitive impairments are relatively selective and include deficits in incremental learning from trial-by-trial feedback, while other forms of learning, such as hippocampal-dependent episodic memory, remain intact. Interestingly, it has been suggested that the striatum and the hippocampus compete during learning, leading to the intriguing prediction that the striatal disruption in PD could lead to enhanced performance on tasks that depend on the

Alzheimer's disease can spare local metacognition despite global anosognosia: revisiting the confidence-accuracy relationship in episodic memory.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) can impair metacognition in addition to more basic cognitive functions like memory. However, while global metacognitive inaccuracies are well documented (i.e., low deficit awareness, or anosognosia), the evidence is mixed regarding the effects of AD on local or task-based metacognitive judgments. Here we investigated local metacognition with respect to the confidence-accuracy relationship in episodic memory (i.e., metamemory). AD and control participants studied pictures of common objects and their verbal labels, and then took forced-choice picture recollection tests u

The relationship between level of processing and hippocampal-cortical functional connectivity during episodic memory formation in humans.

New episodic memory traces represent a record of the ongoing neocortical processing engaged during memory formation (encoding). Thus, during encoding, deep (semantic) processing typically establishes more distinctive and retrievable memory traces than does shallow (perceptual) processing, as assessed by later episodic memory tests. By contrast, the hippocampus appears to play a processing-independent role in encoding, because hippocampal lesions impair encoding regardless of level of processing. Here, we clarified the neural relationship between processing and encoding by examining hippocampal

Episodic memory dysfunction during sodium amytal testing of epileptic patients in relation to posterior cerebral artery perfusion.

The effect of filling of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) on memory performance during the intracarotid sodium amytal test (IAP) was investigated in 57 patients with unilateral temporal epileptic seizure foci under consideration for surgical therapy. Memory functioning was tested following injection of the internal carotid artery contralateral and ipsilateral to the side of seizure focus. In both cases, patients with PCA filling observed using conventional angiography showed a greater memory deficit, although this effect was more robust with contralateral injections. In a subsample of patie

BOLD fMRI activations and LC contrast associated with successful episodic memory in healthy older adults and MCI.

INTRODUCTION: We examined whether locus coeruleus (LC) contrast, an indirect proxy for neuronal density and structural health, was related to delayed episodic memory in healthy older adults (OAs) and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and its association with encoding-related brain activity, controlling for emotional salience. METHODS: Participants (27 younger adults, 26 OAs, and 24 MCI) memorized emotional and neutral images during functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Delayed memory was tested after 4 h and compared to immediate memory. LC contrast was measured via LC-sensiti

Cognitive reserve in subjective cognitive decline with worry: DMN-VN connectivity supports episodic memory under structural vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of worry in subjects with Subjective Cognitive Decline(SCD) confers a greater risk of future AD and cognitive decline. However, it is not known whether these individuals have distinct memory and neuroimaging profiles. Therefore, we aimed to identify brain imaging characteristics associated with episodic memory in elderly adults with subjective cognitive decline and related worry (SCD+) in a population-based cohort. METHODS: A total of 418 individuals from the BABRI cohort underwent structural MRI (n = 418) and episodic memory-related task-based fMRI (n = 153) scans.

Complementary roles of the human perirhinal and the entorhinal cortex in the hippocampal retrieval of episodic memory.

Episodic memory involves the representation of memories shared across a global context as well as that of unique events that occurred within it. To examine how parahippocampal subregions support this balance, we had participants encounter multiple objects in each building of a virtual environment and later asked them to recall the building associated with each cued object during fMRI scanning. Across the MTL, objects from the same building showed greater representational similarity than those from different buildings, indicating the integration of contextually associated memories. This effect

Peripheral Inflammation Is Associated With Greater Neuronal Injury and Lower Episodic Memory Among Late Middle-Aged Adults.

Elucidating the earliest biological mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD) is critical for advancing early detection strategies. While amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau pathologies have been central to preclinical AD research, the roles of peripheral biological processes in disease initiation remain underexplored. We investigated patterns of 18F-MK6240 tau positron emission tomography (PET) and peripheral inflammation across stages defined by Aβ burden and neuronal injury in n = 132 (64.5 ± 3.4 years old, 69.7% female, 10.7 ± 4.0 years of education, 34.1% APOE4 carriers) cognitively unimpaired la

The effects of experimental pain on episodic memory and its top-down modulation: a preregistered pooled analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pain can automatically interfere with ongoing cognitive processes such as attention and memory. The extent of pain's negative effects on cognitive functioning seems to depend on a balance between top-down and bottom-up factors. OBJECTIVES: In this large, preregistered, pooled reanalysis of 8 studies, we investigated the robustness of the detrimental effect of acute pain on recognition memory and whether top-down mechanisms such as pain-related expectations or cognitions (pain-related fear, pain catastrophizing) modulate this effect. METHODS: Two hundred forty-seven healthy part

The acute effects of psychoactive drugs on emotional episodic memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval: A comprehensive review.

Psychoactive drugs modulate learning and emotional processes in ways that could impact their recreational and medical use. Recent work has revealed how drugs impact different stages of processing emotional episodic memories, specifically encoding (forming memories), consolidation (stabilizing memories), and retrieval (accessing memories). Drugs administered before encoding may preferentially impair (e.g., GABAA sedatives including alcohol and benzodiazepines, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, ketamine), enhance (e.g., dextroamphetamine and dextromethamphetamine), or both impair and enhance (i.e.

Model of brain maintenance reveals specific change-change association between medial-temporal lobe integrity and episodic memory.

Brain maintenance has been identified as a major determinant of successful memory aging. However, the extent to which brain maintenance in support of successful memory aging is specific to memory-related brain regions or forms part of a brain-wide phenomenon is unresolved. Here, we used longitudinal brain-wide gray matter MRI volumes in 262 healthy participants aged 55 to 80 years at baseline to investigate separable dimensions of brain atrophy, and explored the links of these dimensions to different dimensions of cognitive change. We statistically adjusted for common causes of change in both

Connectivity between default mode and frontoparietal networks mediates the association between global amyloid-β and episodic memory.

Βeta-amyloid (Aβ) is a neurotoxic protein that deposits early in the pathogenesis of preclinical Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to identify network connectivity that may alter the negative effect of Aβ on cognition. Following assessment of memory performance, resting-state fMRI, and mean cortical PET-Aβ, a total of 364 older adults (286 with clinical dementia rating [CDR-0], 59 with CDR-0.5 and 19 with CDR-1, mean age: 74.0 ± 6.4 years) from the OASIS-3 sample were included in the analysis. Across all participants, a partial least squares regression showed that lower connectivity between poster

Different patterns of gray matter atrophy in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia with and without episodic memory impairment.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) from Alzheimer's disease (AD) is important as these two conditions have distinct treatment and prognosis. Using episodic impairment and medial temporal lobe atrophy as a tool to make this distinction has been debatable in the recent literature, as some patients with bvFTD can also have episodic memory impairment and medial temporal lobe atrophy early in the disease. OBJECTIVES: To compare brain atrophy patterns of patients with bvFTD with and without episodic memory impairment to that of patients with
