The vulval vestibular mucosa-morphological effects of oral contraceptives and menstrual cycle.

BACKGROUND: An erythematous and hypersensitive vestibular mucosa has been observed during the use of combined oral contraceptives (COC). Hormonal effects on the vestibular morphology have not been studied. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to evaluate the morphology of the vulval vestibular mucosa during the influence of COC and during the menstrual cycle. METHODS: Forty-five healthy women (20 using COC and 25 not using COC) were included. A 6-mm punch biopsy was obtained from the right posterior vestibule on days 7-11 of the menstrual cycle. A corresponding biopsy was taken 2 weeks later in 16 women

Anaerobic power performance and the menstrual cycle: eumenorrheic and oral contraceptive users.

AIM: The purpose of this project was to compare the impact of the menstrual cycle on short-term, high intensity (power) performance in active females who either had normal menstrual cycles (NOC) or who were using oral contraceptives (OC). METHODS: Subjects (7 NOC, 17 OC) completed a Margaria-Kalamen staircase test and a Wingate cycle test on 3 occasions: one for familiarization and the other two trials (random order) during menses (MEN) or luteal (LUT) phase. Phase was documented by urinary luteinizing hormone for the NOC. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between MEN and LUT in

Sleep, rhythms and women's mood. Part I. Menstrual cycle, pregnancy and postpartum.

This review summarizes studies of sleep and other biological rhythms during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and the postpartum period, focusing, where feasible, on studies in women who met DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 4th edition) criteria for a depressive disorder compared with healthy controls. The aim was to review supporting evidence for the hypothesis that disruption of the normal temporal relationship between sleep and other biological rhythms such as melatonin, core body temperature, cortisol, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) or prolactin occurring dur

Uterine leiomyoma and menstrual cycle characteristics in a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: We examined the association of uterine leiomyoma with menstrual cycle characteristics in a population of non-care-seeking women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study uses data from the Seveso Women's Health Study (SWHS), a population-based cohort in Italy. Participants included 341 premenopausal women, 30-60 years old, who had an intact uterus and were not pregnant, lactating, or using oral contraception or intra-uterine devices. We examined the presence of any ultrasound-detected uterine leiomyoma in relation to self-reported menstrual cycle length, flow length and heaviness of fl

Uterine peristaltic activity during the menstrual cycle: characterization, regulation, function and dysfunction.

Unlike other smooth muscle organs, the uterine muscle was regarded to be normally functional for only a brief period, following a lengthy gestation. However, recently it has been shown that uterine peristalsis constitutes one of the fundamental functions of the non-pregnant uterus. Its morphological basis is the archimyometrium, which is the muscular component of the archimetra and which preserves a functional bipartition of the primarily unpaired uterus. Three types of uterine peristaltic contractions can be distinguished: cervico-fundal, fundo-cervical and isthmical peristaltic activity, whi

Hemodynamic and sympathetic nervous system responses to stress during the menstrual cycle.

In this study, the impact of menstrual cycle phase on hemodynamic and sympathetic nervous system responses was examined during exposure to a battery of laboratory stressors. Participants were 40 healthy premenopausal women, aged 26 to 51. Impedance cardiography was used to measure stroke volume, heart rate, and cardiac output. Systemic vascular resistance was derived on the basis of concurrently recorded blood pressure and cardiac output. The menstrual cycle's effect on the sympathetic nervous system response was explored by evaluating plasma catecholamine responses during stress. In luteal co

Changes in sensorimotor inhibition across the menstrual cycle: implications for neuropsychiatric disorders.

The startle reflex is inhibited when the starting noise is preceded 30-500 msec by a weak prepulse. "Prepulse inhibition" (PPI) is reduced in specific neuropsychiatric disorders characterized clinically by impaired inhibition of sensory, motor, or cognitive information. PPI is sexually dimorphic, with men exhibiting significantly more PPI than women. We examined possible neuroendocrine substrates for this sex difference in PPI. The startle reflex, and a measure of visuospatial priming, were measured in 10 men, and in 46 normal women at different points in their menstrual cycle. In women, PPI w

Expression of adhesion molecules in human endometrial vasculature throughout the menstrual cycle.

In the present study, we examined the pattern of expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR as well as several adhesion molecules implicated in leukocyte trafficking, including ICAM-1, E-selectin, and VCAM-1 in human endometrium. All of the vessels in endometrium exhibited HLA-DR and ICAM-1 throughout the menstrual cycle. In the proliferative phase, endothelial cells in the functionalis were weak to nonreactive for VCAM-1 and were E-selectin negative (E-selectin-). Endothelial cells of the vessels in the basalis and within myometrium were VCAM positive (VCAM-1+)/E-selectin-. In sharp contr

Serum luteinizing hormone profile during the menstrual cycle in polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Thirty-three patients with PCO were studied, focusing on the serum LH profile appearing during their menstrual cycles. The elevated LH level declined gradually after ovulation to the normal or near-normal range at the end of the luteal phase and the early follicular phase. The once declined LH level gradually elevated again with the increasing days from the beginning of menstrual flow and remained at a high level until the next ovulation. The LH response to LH-RH increased with the elevating basal LH level. These results may suggest that the timing of hormonal analysis is important for correct

Changes in menstrual cycle length and regularity after use of oral contraceptives.

This is an analysis of changes in menstrual cycle length and regularity occurring for a group of 211 women who had discontinued use of oral contraceptives. The analysis is based on prospectively recorded histories from the Menstruation and Reproduction History Program. Post-pill menstrual cycle length and regularity are compared with pre-pill averages. In the first post-pill cycle, there was an average increase of 6 days in cycle length. In subsequent cycles, however, cycle length and regularity were comparable to pre-pill norms in most cases.

Body composition and menstrual status in adults with a history of anorexia nervosa-at what fat percentage is the menstrual cycle restored?

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between body composition measures and menstrual status in a large sample of adult patients with a history of anorexia nervosa and to calculate the predicted probability of resumption of menstrual function. Furthermore, to establish whether fat percentage is superior to body mass index in predicting the resumption of menses. METHOD: One hundred and thirteen adult women with a history of anorexia nervosa underwent a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan and completed questionnaires regarding medication prescription and menstrual function. RESULTS: Fift

Metabolic Reprogramming in Endometrium During Menstrual Cycle and Its Relationship to Infertility.

The human endometrium, a complex and dynamic tissue, experiences cyclical shedding, repair, regeneration, and modification in anticipation of embryo implantation. During the mid-secretory phase, influenced by ovarian steroid hormones, it becomes briefly receptive. The functional layer of the endometrium, consisting of several cell types including epithelial, stromal, vascular, and immunological cells, is essential for reproduction as it prepares for implantation, sustains pregnancy, and enables menstruation. Progesterone generated during the secretory phase prepares the endometrium for blastoc

Tracking androgens in female elite athletes: menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive effects.

BACKGROUND: Understanding variations in the androgen profile is crucial for interpreting hormone data and developing cycle-based training strategies tailored to individual athlete needs. Therefore, this study investigates the androgen concentrations of elite female track and field athletes across various hormonal conditions, including natural eumenorrheic cycles, cycles under hormonal contraception, and cycles with menstrual disturbances. METHODS: Using a prospective, longitudinal observational cohort design, 22 athletes (15 naturally cycling, 7 using hormonal contraception) were monitored fo

Rethinking Clinical Visibility in Autistic Females: Autistic Camouflaging and Menstrual Cycle Variability.

Autism spectrum disorder (hereafter autism) is increasingly recognised as being underdiagnosed in females worldwide, contributing to inequalities in clinical visibility and access to appropriate care. The clinical visibility of autism in females is influenced by diagnostic practices historically developed using predominantly male samples, which may be less sensitive to less overt or more socially camouflaged presentations. Greater levels of autistic camouflaging, including masking, compensations, and assimilation, have been proposed as one factor contributing to differences in the presentation

Endometrial Proliferative Phase-Centered View of Transcriptome Dynamics across the Menstrual Cycle.

The endometrium, the inner mucosal lining of the uterus, undergoes complex molecular and cellular changes across the menstrual cycle in preparation for embryo implantation. Transcriptome-wide analyses have mainly been utilized to study endometrial receptivity, the prerequisite for successful implantation, with most studies, so far, comparing the endometrial transcriptomes between (i) secretory and proliferative endometrium or (ii) mid-secretory and early secretory endometrium. In the current study, we provide a complete transcriptome description of the endometrium across the entire menstrual c

Menstrual cycle length and adverse pregnancy outcomes among women in Project Viva.

BACKGROUND: Retrospective studies suggest that menstrual cycle length may be a risk marker of adverse pregnancy outcomes, but this evidence is susceptible to recall bias. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prospective association between menstrual cycle length and the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Secondary analysis of 2046 women enrolled in Project Viva at ~10 weeks of gestation and followed through delivery. The exposure was menstrual cycle length. The outcomes included gestational glucose tolerance (gestational diabetes/impaired glucose tolerance [GDM/IGT] and isolated hyperglycaem

Psychiatric Symptoms Across the Menstrual Cycle in Adult Women: A Comprehensive Review.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to:• Discuss and outline the general and overlapping effects of the menstrual cycle on women's mental health. ABSTRACT: A growing body of research demonstrates menstrual cycle-dependent fluctuations in psychiatric symptoms; these fluctuations can therefore be considered as prevalent phenomena. Possible mechanisms underlying these fluctuations posit behavioral, psychological, and neuroendocrine influences. Recent reviews document cyclic exacerbation of symptoms and explore these mechanisms in the context o
