PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The role and underlying mechanisms mediated by dietary salt in modulating the gut microbiota and contributing to heart failure (HF) are not clear. This review summarizes the mechanisms of dietary salt and the gut-heart axis in HF.
RECENT FINDINGS: The gut microbiota has been implicated in several cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) including HF. Dietary factors including high consumption of salt play a role in influencing the gut microbiota, resulting in dysbiosis. An imbalance of microbial species due to a reduction in microbial diversity with accompanying immune cell activatio

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract that results from dysfunction in innate and/or adaptive immune responses. Impaired innate immunity, which leads to lack of control of an altered intestinal microbiota and to activation of the adaptive immune system, promotes a secondary inflammatory response that is responsible for tissue damage. Neutrophils are key players in innate immunity in IBD, but their roles have been neglected compared with those of other immune cells. The latest studies on neutrophils in IBD have revealed unexpected com

Hematologic neoplasms represent 6.5% of all cancers worldwide. They are characterized by the uncontrolled growth of hematopoietic and lymphoid cells and a decreased immune system efficacy. Pathological conditions in hematologic cancer could disrupt the balance of the gut microbiota, potentially promoting the proliferation of opportunistic pathogens. In this review, we highlight studies that analyzed and described the role of gut microbiota in different types of hematologic diseases. For instance, myeloma is often associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Clostridium leptum, while in leukemias

The microbiota is composed of numerous resident microorganisms, which contribute to the health and illness of the individual. When the microbiota is in dysbiosis, it can cause some pathological processes and in men it can be correlated with male infertility, so the present study does a systematic review, identifying whether there is a correlation between the microbiota and seminal quality. We analyzed 7 papers published in PubMed, Medline and the Cochrane library databases, in English and published between 2012 and 2022. In men with normal semen parameters, a higher prevalence of Lactobacillus

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) involves the delivery of an entire microbial community from a healthy donor to a recipient with the intention of ameliorating or curing a specific disease. Current evidence strongly supports a role for FMT in the treatment of Clostridiodes difficile infection, with cure rates of approximately 80% to 90%. This success has led to increasing attention for FMT as a potential therapeutic intervention for other conditions associated with disturbances of the intestinal microbiome, including inflammatory bowel diseases, autism spectrum disorder, and obesity. This

The human vaginal microbiota is a critical determinant of vaginal health. These communities live in close association with the vaginal epithelium and rely on host tissues for resources. Although often dominated by lactobacilli, the vaginal microbiota is also frequently composed of a collection of facultative and obligate anaerobes. The prevalence of these communities with a paucity of Lactobacillus species varies among women, and epidemiological studies have associated them with an increased risk of adverse health outcomes. The mechanisms that drive these associations have yet to be described

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common and debilitating gastrointestinal disorder attributed to altered gut-brain interactions. While the etiology of FD remains unknown, emerging research suggests the mechanisms are likely multifactorial and heterogenous among patient subgroups. Small bowel motor disturbances, visceral hypersensitivity, chronic microinflammation, and increased intestinal tract permeability have all been linked to the pathogenesis of FD. Recently, alterations to the gut microbiome have also been implicated to play an important role in the disease. Changes to the duod

Sleep is a universal physiological need in all species and is essential for the maintenance and recovery of various physiological functions of the body. In late years, the gut microbiota (GM), a vast and extraordinarily complex ecosystem located in human gastrointestinal tract that oversees an array of critical bodily functions, has become a popular focus among researchers. Accumulated evidences in this field have revealed that it exerts important roles in the regulation of some biological characteristics, especially metabolic, immunological and neurobehavioral functions. With the increasing c

The microbiota, the set of microorganisms associated with a particular environment or host, has acquired a prominent role in the study of many physiological and developmental processes. Among these, is the relationship between the microbiota and regenerative processes in various organisms. Here we introduce the concept of the microbiota and its involvement in regeneration-related cellular events. We then review the role of the microbiota in regenerative models that extend from the repair of tissue layers to the regeneration of complete organs or animals. We highlight the role of the microbiota

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterised by the restriction of energy intake in relation to energy needs and a significantly lowered body weight than normally expected, coupled with an intense fear of gaining weight. Treatment of AN is currently based on psychological and refeeding approaches, but their efficacy remains limited since 40% of patients after 10 years of medical care still present symptoms of AN. The intestine hosts a large community of microorganisms, called the "microbiota", which live in symbiosis with the human host. The gut microbiota of a healthy human is dominated by bacteria

Glomerular injury is the major cause of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) worldwide and is characterized by proteinuria. Glomerulonephritis (GN) has a wide spectrum of etiologies, the intensity of glomerular damage, histopathology, and clinical outcomes that can be associated with the landscape of the nephritogenic immune response. Beyond impaired immune responses and genetic factors, recent evidence indicates that microbiota can be contributed to the pathogenesis of GN and patients' outcomes by impacting many aspects of the innate and adaptive immune systems. It is still unknown whether dysbiosis

BACKGROUND: In adults, gut dysbiosis may contribute to the pathogenesis of gout. However, the characteristics of gut microbiota in children with hyperuricemia (HUA) in the absence of clinical gout have not been explored.
OBJECTIVE: This present study analyzed the gut microbiota in children with HUA as compared to controls (Con) and explored bacterial associations that may account for differences.
METHODS: A total of 80 children were enrolled in this study; they were divided into HUA and Con according to the level of serum uric acid (UA). The composition of gut microbiota was investigated by

In recent years, significant findings have emerged concerning the association between the gut microbiota and various human diseases. The diversity can be explained by a multitude of interactions between intrinsic and environmental factors that are unique to each individual. This uniqueness of the microbiota may explain why some individuals are more prone to develop cardiovascular diseases. Gut dysbiosis plays a significant role in various pathophysiological processes. It can be postulated that health is linked to the homeostasis of the gastrointestinal microbiota. We provide an overview of dia

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence has suggested that the bi-directional communication pathway, the microbiota-gut-brain axis, plays an important role in the pathophysiology of many neuropsychiatric diseases including major depressive disorder (MDD). This review outlines current evidence and promising findings related to the pathophysiology and treatment of MDD.
SUMMARY: There are at least 4 key biological molecules/systems underlying the pathophysiology of MDD: central dopamine, stress responses by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and autonomic nervous system, inflammation, and brain-d

There is increasing recognition of the importance of both the microbiome and vitamin D in states of health and disease. Microbiome studies have already demonstrated unique microbial patterns in systemic autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Dysbiosis also seems to be associated with allergies, in particular asthma, atopic dermatitis, and food allergy. Even though the effect of vitamin D supplementation on these pathologies is still unknown, vitamin D deficiency deeply influences the microbiome by altering the microbiome

Accumulating evidence show that the gut microbiota is deeply involved not only in host nutrient metabolism but also in immune function, endocrine regulation, and chronic disease. In neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the gut-brain axis, the bidirectional interaction between the brain and the gut, provides new route of pathological spread and potential therapeutic targets. Although studies of gut microbiota have been conducted mainly in mice, mammalian gut microbiota is highly diverse, complex, and sensitiv

Lung microbiota (LM) is an interesting new way to consider and redesign pathogenesis and possible therapeutic approach to many lung diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), which is an interstitial pneumonia with bad prognosis. Chronic inflammation is the basis but probably not the only cause of lung fibrosis and although the risk factors are not completely clear, endogenous factors (e.g. gastroesophageal reflux) and environmental factors like cigarette smoking, industrial dusts, and precisely microbial agents could contribute to the IPF development. It is well demonstrated that

The pathways and mechanisms of the production of H2S in the gastrointestinal tract are briefly described, including endogenous H2S produced by the organism and H2S from microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, the physiological regulatory functions of H2S on gastrointestinal motility, sensation, secretion and absorption, endocrine system, proliferation and differentiation of stem cells, and the possible mechanisms involved are introduced. In view of the complexity of biosynthesis, physiological roles, and the mechanism of H2S, this chapter focuses on the interactions and dyna

BACKGROUND: Azithromycin is commonly prescribed drug for individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), with demonstrated benefits in reducing lung function decline, exacerbation occurrence and improving nutrition. As azithromycin has antimicrobial activity against components of the uncultured microbiome and increasingly the CF microbiome is implicated in disease pathogenesis - we postulated azithromycin may act through its manipulation. Herein we sought to determine if the CF microbiome changed following azithromycin use and if clinical benefit observed during azithromycin use associated with baselin

In recent years, the role of human microbiota as a short- and long-term health promoter and modulator has been affirmed and progressively strengthened. In the course of one's life, each subject is colonized by a great number of bacteria, which constitute its specific and individual microbiota. Human bacterial colonization starts during fetal life, in opposition to the previous paradigm of the "sterile womb". Placenta, amniotic fluid, cord blood and fetal tissues each have their own specific microbiota, influenced by maternal health and habits and having a decisive influence on pregnancy outcom
