Vestibulectomy prior cordectomy in tomes: Advantages and dysplasia findings.

INTRODUCTION: Vestibulectomy prior to Transoral microelectrodes surgery (TOMES) cordectomies improves the tumor exposure, enables precise oncological surgery ensuring minimal invasiveness. The finding of dysplasia in non-oncologic ventricular fold (VF) resections led us to analyze the histopathological results in all the samples. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a retrospective study analyzing 64 T1/T2 glottic carcinoma patients treated with TOMES cordectomy and uni/bilateral vestibulectomy. The bleeding rate and presence of dysplasia were evaluated. The procedure using microelectrodes is exp

Microinjectrode System for Combined Drug Infusion and Electrophysiology.

This microinjectrode system is designed for drug infusion, electrophysiology, and delivery and retrieval of experimental probes, such as microelectrodes and nanosensors, optimized for repeated use in awake, behaving animals. The microinjectrode system can be configured for multiple purposes: (1) simple arrangement of the cannula for placement of an experimental probe that would otherwise be too fragile to penetrate the dura mater, (2) microfluidic infusion of a drug, either independently or coupled to a cannula containing an experimental probe (i.e., microelectrode, nanosensor). In this protoc

Subthalamic nucleus physiology is correlated with deep brain stimulation motor and non-motor outcomes.

Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation is commonly indicated for symptomatic relief of idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Despite the known improvement in motor scores, affective, cognitive, voice and speech functions might deteriorate following this procedure. Recent studies have correlated motor outcomes with intraoperative microelectrode recordings. However, there are no microelectrode recording-based tools with predictive values relating to long-term outcomes of integrative motor and non-motor symptoms. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the outcomes of patients with idiopathic Park

Clinical applications of penetrating neural interfaces and Utah Electrode Array technologies.

This paper briefly describes some of the recent progress in the development of penetrating microelectrode arrays and highlights the use of two of these devices, Utah electrode arrays and Utah slanted electrode arrays, in two therapeutic interventions: recording volitional skeletal motor commands from the central nervous system, and recording motor commands and evoking somatosensory percepts in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The paper also briefly explores other potential sites for microelectrode array interventions that could be profitably pursued and that could have important consequenc

Use of a QDOT MICRO catheter to identify a premature ventricular contraction origin in the right ventricular anterior papillary muscle in a repaired truncus arteriosus.

The ventricular papillary muscles (VPMs) can be a source of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). Catheter ablation of VPM PVCs is challenging because of the anatomical complexity, such as the apical structures in proximity to the ventricular walls. The QDOT MICRO catheter (Biosense Webster, Diamond Bar, CA, USA) has microelectrodes embedded along the circumference of its distal tip and can provide information on which side of its tip myocardial activation is earlier. This repaired truncus arteriosus case demonstrates the usefulness of the microelectrode recording in identifying a PVC ori

Initial surgical experience with a dense cortical microarray in epileptic patients undergoing craniotomy for subdural electrode implantation.

OBJECTIVE: Detailed investigations of cortical physiology require the ability to record brain electrical activity at a submillimeter scale. Standard intracranial electrodes result in significant averaging of potentials generated by large numbers of neurons. In contrast, microelectrode arrays allow for recording of local field potentials and single-unit activity. We describe our initial surgical experience with the NeuroPort microelectrode array (Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems, Inc., Salt Lake City, UT) in a series of patients undergoing subdural electrode implantation for epilepsy monit

In vivo spatiotemporal dynamics of astrocyte reactivity following neural electrode implantation.

Brain computer interfaces (BCIs), including penetrating microelectrode arrays, enable both recording and stimulation of neural cells. However, device implantation inevitably causes injury to brain tissue and induces a foreign body response, leading to reduced recording performance and stimulation efficacy. Astrocytes in the healthy brain play multiple roles including regulating energy metabolism, homeostatic balance, transmission of neural signals, and neurovascular coupling. Following an insult to the brain, they are activated and gather around the site of injury. These reactive astrocytes ha

The response of cat spinal motoneurones to the intracellular application of agents with local anaesthetic action.

QX-222 (the trimethyl analogue of lignocaine), methylxylocholine, lignocaine and pentobarbitone were iontophoresed intracellularly into cat lumbosacral motoneurones. Iontophoresis and recording was either from a triple-barrelled microelectrode unit or from two separately advanced microelectrodes. QX-222 and methylxylocholine caused a very slow reversible block of the current-evoked and antidromic action potentials (AP) with no significant change of membrane potential (EM). Lignocaine had a minimal blocking effect on the AP. No change, or only a small decrease, of membrane slope conductance (GM

Engineered Graphene Material Improves the Performance of Intraneural Peripheral Nerve Electrodes.

Limb neuroprostheses aim to restore motor and sensory functions in amputated or severely nerve-injured patients. These devices use neural interfaces to record and stimulate nerve action potentials, creating a bidirectional connection with the nervous system. Most neural interfaces are based on standard metal microelectrodes. In this work, a new generation of neural interfaces which replaces metals with engineered graphene, called EGNITE, is tested. In vitro and in vivo experiments are conducted to assess EGNITE biocompatibility. In vitro tests show that EGNITE does not impact cell viability. I

Bilayer-Nanomesh Transparent Neuroelectrodes on 10μm-Thick PDMS.

Transparent electrode arrays have emerged as promising platforms for neural interfacing by enabling simultaneous electrophysiological recording and optical measurements. Soft and thin devices also have compelling advantages due to their less mechanical mismatch with the brain tissue. Here we demonstrate a bilayer-nanomesh-based transparent microelectrode array (MEA) on ultrathin Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. We have successfully fabricated 32-channel, bilayer-nanomesh microelectrodes on PDMS with total device thickness down to only 10μm. In addition to excellent electrode performance,

A head holder and stereotaxic device for the rattlesnake.

We describe an apparatus for immobilization of the rattlesnake head for brain experimentation. Its design also allows its use as a stereotaxic instrument for electrophysiological studies employing microelectrodes. Attachment of the head is at the two orbital ridges and the hard palate. The bregma provides a zero reference for the frontal, lateral, and depth coordinates.

Dielectrophoretic isolation and detection of cfc-DNA nanoparticulate biomarkers and virus from blood.

Dielectrophoretic (DEP) microarray devices allow important cellular nanoparticulate biomarkers and virus to be rapidly isolated, concentrated, and detected directly from clinical and biological samples. A variety of submicron nanoparticulate entities including cell free circulating (cfc) DNA, mitochondria, and virus can be isolated into DEP high-field areas on microelectrodes, while blood cells and other micron-size entities become isolated into DEP low-field areas between the microelectrodes. The nanoparticulate entities are held in the DEP high-field areas while cells are washed away along w

Dielectrophoretic sorting on a microfabricated flow cytometer: label free separation of Babesia bovis infected erythrocytes.

Dielectrophoresis is a method that has demonstrated great potential in cell discrimination and isolation. In this study, the dielectrophoretic sorting of normal and Babesia bovis infected erythrocytes was performed using a microfabricated flow cytometer. Separation was possible through exploitation of the dielectric differences between normal and infected erythrocytes, essentially due to the higher ionic membrane permeability of B. bovis infected cells. Sorting experiments were performed inside a microchip made from Pt microelectrodes and SU-8 channels patterned on a glass substrate. Optimum c

Characteristics of basolateral Cl- transport by gastric surface epithelium in Necturus antral mucosa.

Conventional and ion-selective microelectrodes were used to characterize transport of Cl- across the basolateral cell membranes of gastric surface epithelium in isolated preparations of gastric antrum of Necturus. Conventional, voltage-sensing electrodes were used to evaluate changes in membrane potentials and resistances during removal of Cl- from the nutrient perfusate. Liquid ion exchanger Cl(-)-selective microelectrodes were constructed and validated to measure intracellular Cl- activity (aiCl). Our data indicate that 1) aiCl (range 12-25 mM) is close to that predicted if Cl- is distribute

The foreign body response to the Utah Slant Electrode Array in the cat sciatic nerve.

As the field of neuroprosthetic research continues to grow, studies describing the foreign body reaction surrounding chronic indwelling electrodes or microelectrode arrays will be critical for assessing biocompatibility. Of particular importance is the reaction surrounding penetrating microelectrodes that are used to stimulate and record from peripheral nerves used for prosthetic control, where such studies on axially penetrating electrodes are limited. Using the Utah Slant Electrode Array and a variety of histological methods, we investigated the foreign body response to the implanted array a

Bimetal-organic framework-integrated electrochemical sensor for on-chip detection of H2S and H2O2 in cancer tissues.

Studies on the interaction between hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in redox signaling motivate the development of a sensitive sensing platform for their discriminatory and dynamic detection. Herein, we present a fully integrated microfluidic on-chip electrochemical sensor for the online and simultaneous monitoring of H2S and H2O2 secreted by different biological samples. The sensor utilizes a cicada-wing-like RuCu bimetal-organic framework with uniform nanorods architecture that grows on a flexible carbon fiber microelectrode. Tracking tremor frequency in spike trains using the extended kalman filter.

Tremor is one of the most disabling symptoms in patients with many movement disorders including Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET). Neural tremor, which is measured by microelectrodes placed near nerve cells or obtained from brain cells during stereotactic neurosurgery, is due to the fluctuation of the firing rate of neurons. The frequency of this neural tremor varies over time and is nonstationary. We describe a frequency tracking method using the extended Kalman filter (EKF) to estimate the instantaneous tremor frequency (ITF) of binary spike trains detected from microelectro

Cuprizone-induced oligodendrocyte loss and demyelination impairs recording performance of chronically implanted neural interfaces.

Biological inflammation induced during penetrating cortical injury can disrupt functional neuronal and glial activity within the cortex, resulting in potential recording failure of chronically implanted neural interfaces. Oligodendrocytes provide critical support for neuronal health and function through direct contact with neuronal soma and axons within the cortex. Given their fundamental role to regulate neuronal activity via myelin, coupled with their heightened vulnerability to metabolic brain injury due to high energetic demands, oligodendrocytes are hypothesized as a possible source of bi
