BACKGROUND: The U.S. armed forces recently experienced a reduction in forces along with an increase in operational tempo. The Air Force and other branches supporting its mission share this common military burden and also experience a unique stressor. The Air Force has developed a military force that can fight by night and return home by day. The relatively new phenomenon of "commuter war" was especially evident during Operation Allied Force over Kosovo.
METHODS: Military personnel (N = 540) participating in Operation Allied Force were administered a survey measuring morale, wellness behaviors

Service members experience unique occupational hazards that may increase their risk for melanoma. This longitudinal study aimed to determine associations between deployment status, environmental exposures, and solar exposures and incident melanoma among active duty service members. Millennium Cohort Study survey data (2001-2021) were linked with deployment and military health care records (2000-2021). Adjusted Cox proportional hazards models estimated effects of exposures and covariates on incident melanoma. Risk of melanoma diagnosis by age (early vs late onset) and anatomical site (sun-prote

The prevalence of postdeployment mental health (PDMH) conditions in military health care personnel appears to be on par with that of other military personnel. However, there is no comprehensive analysis of incident PDMH conditions within the overall population of U.S. Air Force Medical Service personnel. This study explored the epidemiology of incident PDMH conditions among Air Force Medical Service personnel returning from deployment. A cohort survival analysis was conducted of 24,409 subjects without preexisting mental health conditions and at least one deployment during 2003-2013. Electroni

Leptospirosis is caused by an infection with bacteria of the Leptospira species. These spirochetes are carried by a variety of wild and domestic animals. Humans can become infected with these bacteria; leptospirosis most commonly occurs in the tropics and subtropics. Military personnel are at risk of infection through deployment in the field.

OBJECTIVE: Although women in the military are exposed to combat and its aftermath, little is known about whether combat as well as pre-deployment risk/protective factors differentially predict post-deployment PTSD symptoms among women compared to men. The current study assesses the influence of combat-related stressors and pre-deployment risk/protective factors on women's risk of developing PTSD symptoms following deployment relative to men's risk.
METHOD: Participants were 801 US National Guard Soldiers (712 men, 89 women) deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan who completed measures of potential r

The origins of military neurosurgery are closely linked to those of neurosurgery in France and more particularly in Paris. The history of the field starts with its origins by 2 men, Thierry de Martel and Clovis Vincent. The first note about the creation of military neurosurgery was in 1942, when Marcel David was reassigned from the Sainte Anne Hospital to practice at the Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital. David trained the first military neurosurgeon. The field of military neurosurgery was subsequently developed at the Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital, at Sainte Anne Military Teaching Hospital in T

The objective of this study was to collect data that would provide information about the frequency, attitudes, and consequences of alcohol use in the U.S. Army. A questionnaire was used to assess the frequency of alcohol consumption, attitudes related to the use of alcohol, and adverse consequences experienced with alcohol use. The survey was conducted at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Survey participants included both military employees working at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and military patients. No attempt was made to identify the medical status of the participants.

This paper considers the manifestation and treatment of psychological trauma in the military. The article describes how military psychologists conceptualise psychological trauma within the culture of the Armed Forces (AF), which is reflected in the process of acquiring what has been referred to as cultural competency. Psychologists in this context acquire an understanding of the manner in which the psychological and organisational systems and culture of the military affect the presentation of psychological trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The paper outlines core psychol

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell trait (SCT) affects an estimated 5.02% of non-Hispanic blacks, 1.08% of Hispanics, and 0.1% of Whites in the U.S. military. Policies for SCT screening and occupational restrictions vary by service. Population-based studies of SCT with quantification of military-relevant outcomes are lacking.
METHODS: The study design was a retrospective cohort of 15,081 SCT-positive versus 60,320 SCT-negative U.S. active duty personnel enlisted from 1992 to 2012 and followed through 2013. Military-relevant outcome included number and days of deployment, length of service, and cause o

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) is a potential clinical problem associated with distress following exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). While previous studies have linked PMIEs to MI outcomes such as shame and trust violation, few have examined the role of pre-enlistment personality traits in predicting MI. This study investigates whether pre-deployment aggression contributes to MI outcomes among recently discharged Israeli combat veterans, both directly and indirectly, through exposure to PMIEs.
DESIGN: A six-year longitudinal study.
METHODS: 169 Israeli combat veterans w

Military deployment places significant stress on families, yet little is known about its effects in contexts where both deployed and non-deployed family members face ongoing threat. This longitudinal study, conducted during the first seven months of the Israel-Hamas War, investigated how spousal deployment interacts with parental burnout and child emotional and behavioral problems, and whether parental burnout moderates this relationship. The study included 123 Israeli mothers (Mean age = 39.11, SD = 6.10) of children aged 5-18 years (Mean age = 8.47, SD = 3.32), 35 of whom had partners deploy

BACKGROUND: The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is challenged with monitoring and protecting the health and wellbeing of its service members. The growing number of women on active duty and the diverse hazardous exposures associated with military service make reproductive health issues a special concern of DoD. To address this concern, the DoD Birth Defects Registry was established at the DoD Center for Deployment Health Research located at the Naval Health Research Center, San Diego, California.
METHODS: The registry captures comprehensive data on healthcare utilization to calculate the prev

Although previous research has indicated an elevated prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health problems among veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom following deployment, most of this research has been cross-sectional and has focused on a limited range of military groups and outcome criteria. This investigation was a longitudinal study of U.S. Air Force security forces assigned to a year-long high-threat ground mission in Iraq to determine the degree to which airmen's emotional and behavioral health and committed relationships were adversely

Currently, there is strong interest within the military to better understand the effects of long-term occupational exposure to repeated low-level blast on health and performance. To gain traction on the chronic sequelae of blast, we focused on breaching-a tactical technique for gaining entry into closed/blocked spaces by placing explosives and maintaining a calculated safe distance from the detonation. Using a cross-sectional design, we compared the neuropsychological and neurocognitive profiles of breaching instructors and range staff to sex- and age-matched Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) contro

Since 2001, more than 2.7 million U.S. military personnel have been deployed in support of operations in Southwest Asia and Afghanistan. Land-based personnel experienced elevated exposures to particulate matter and other inhalational exposures from multiple sources, including desert dust, burn pit combustion, and other industrial, mobile, or military sources. A workshop conducted at the 2018 American Thoracic Society International Conference had the goals of: 1) identifying key studies assessing postdeployment respiratory health, 2) describing emerging research, and 3) highlighting knowledge g

The organisation of a military health system (MHS) differs from the civilian system due to the role of the armed forces, the unique nature of the supported population and their occupational health requirements. A previously published review of the Military Medical Corps Worldwide Almanac demonstrated the value of a standardised framework for evaluation and comparison of MHSs. This paper proposes such a framework which highlights the unique features of MHSs not covered by health services research of national health systems. These include: national context and summary; organisational structure;

Abstract Evaluating large data sets precludes the ability to directly measure individual experiences, instead relying on proxies to infer certain constructs. Blast exposure is a construct of study currently in its infancy, resulting in diverse definitions and measurements across studies. The purpose of the present study was to validate military occupational specialty (MOS) as a proxy for blast exposure in combat veterans. A total of 256 veterans (86.33% male) completed the Salisbury Blast Interview (SBI) and Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) Assessment

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) can cause significant morbidity in military service members. Prevalences of HBV and HCV infections among military recruits accessioning into the U.S. Air Force have not previously been described. The Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Blood Donor Center was queried for the results of HBV and HCV screening tests among all basic military trainees who donated blood between 25 November 2013 and 16 April 2016. Other active and reserve component members were excluded. The estimated prevalences of HBV and HCV infections among recruit blood donors were
