The burden of motorcycle-related neuro-trauma in Ireland and associated helmet usage.

Motorcycles represent less than 2% of the licensed vehicles but motorcyclists account for 12% of road deaths in Ireland. The British Road Safety Authority has introduced the Sharp programme, which hopes to save 50 lives in the U.K. each year alone by helping riders to choose the best-fitting and safest helmets. We evaluated the pattern of head injuries sustained by motorcyclists referred to the two neurosurgical centres Beaumont Hospital and Cork University Hospital in Ireland and ascertained if the new SHARP guidelines could be of benefit in reducing the burden of motorcycle related neurotrau

The visual search patterns and hazard responses of experienced and inexperienced motorcycle riders.

Hazard perception is a critical skill for road users. In this study, an open-loop motorcycle simulator was used to examine the effects of motorcycle riding and car driving experience on hazard perception and visual scanning patterns. Three groups of participants were tested: experienced motorcycle riders who were experienced drivers (EM-ED), inexperienced riders/experienced drivers (IM-ED), and inexperienced riders/inexperienced drivers (IM-ID). Participants were asked to search for hazards in simulated scenarios, and click a response button when a hazard was identified. The results revealed a

Traumatic vertebral artery dissection and Wallenberg syndrome after a motorcycle collision.

Wallenberg syndrome is also called lateral medullary syndrome or posterior inferior cerebellar artery syndrome. The clinical presentations include ipsilateral Horner syndrome, ipsilateral cerebellar signs, and the hypalgesia of ipsilateral face and contralateral body. A considerable number of cases of Wallenberg syndrome were reported to be associated with vertebral artery dissection (VAD). Nowadays, the preferred imaging tool comes down to magnetic resonance imaging because it provides high spatial resolution, which is especially important for assessment of lesions in posterior fossa. The opt

Factors associated with severity of motorcycle injuries among young adult riders.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: A cohort of 4,729 junior college students in Taiwan was studied to determine risk factors for increased severity of motorcycle injuries. METHODS: Crash characteristics were collected by using self-administered questionnaires soon after a student was involved in a motorcycle crash. The proportional odds model with generalized estimating equations, with correlated ordinal responses for collisions categorized into not injured, mildly injured, and severely injured categories, was used to determine the odds of injury severity. RESULTS: A total of 1,889 motorcycle crashes involvin

Incidence, severity, and patterns of intrathoracic and intra-abdominal injuries in motorcycle crashes.

BACKGROUND: Although severe head injuries have been reduced with helmet use, little has been done to address the severity of trauma to organs of the trunk in motorcycle crashes. We detail the frequency, severity, and pattern of intrathoracic and intra-abdominal injuries that may be helpful in the recognition and medical treatment of such injuries. METHODS: Diagnostic and treatment information from emergency room, hospital, and coroner records from a cohort of motorcyclists injured from 1991 to 1992 were obtained from 28 hospitals and 11 coroners in California. RESULTS: Multiple intrathoracic

Factors affecting motorcycle helmet use in the population of Greater Athens, Greece.

OBJECTIVES: Helmet use is the best preventive measure available against two wheel motorized vehicle (TWMV) related head injuries. In some countries, however, helmets are used only by a minority of TWMV riders. In collaboration with the Road Traffic Police Department, an inspection survey was undertaken to assess the prevalence and to determine predictors of helmet use. SETTING: The Greater Athens area, Greece, during July and August 1998. METHODS: A total of 982 TWMVs were stopped, 349 of which had two riders (36%). All riders were interviewed by staff members of the Centre for Research and

Motorcycling attitudes and behaviours. I. 12 and 13 year old adolescents.

The death and serious injury of adolescent motorcyclists is a major public health problem. Effective preventive strategies depend on knowledge about target populations. The attitudes and patterns of exposure to motorcycling of 730 13 year old New Zealand adolescents are described. Fifty-two per cent could ride a motorcycle, a further 13% intended to learn, 22% had driven on-road, and 60% had ridden as pillion passengers on-road. Significantly more males than females were riders (P less than 0.001) and had ridden as pillion passengers (P less than 0.05). More male than female non-riders intende

Factors influencing injury severity in three-wheeled motorized rickshaw and motorcycle collisions.

Crashes involving three-wheeler motorized rickshaws (3-WMR) and motorcycles are becoming a rising public health and socioeconomic problem in developing countries. While earlier studies have investigated safety-related issues for two, and four-wheelers, there exists a notable research gap to understanding the factors that contribute to the severity of injuries in involving 3-WMR collisions with motorcyclists. The current study aims to fill this gap by investigating the risk factors contributing to injury severity in such crashes, employing a random parameters multinomial logit model with hetero

Double-sided gastric perforation after a motorcycle accident in Korea: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle accidents often result in abdominal trauma in patients seeking emergency care. Injuries to the hollow viscera, including the duodenum, jejunum, urinary bladder, and colorectum, are relatively common. In contrast, owing to the protective function of the anterior rib cage, gastric rupture is exceptionally rare, with an incidence of < 1.7%. Gastric rupture typically occurs in the anterior wall and rarely presents as multiple ruptures. This report describes an unusual case of multiple gastric ruptures resulting from blunt trauma. CASE SUMMARY: A 21-year-old man, who was inv

Identification of Factors Associated with Both Frequency and Severity of Deer-Related Motorcycle Crashes.

INTRODUCTION: Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to injury when encountering large animals such as deer in the roadway. The frequency of these events, factors associated with their occurrence, and the extent of injuries sustained from such crashes are not yet well described. METHODS: A review of 10 years (2012-2021) of statewide motorcycle crash reports from a single state with a large deer population was performed to ascertain the frequency of deer-associated motorcycle crashes. Environmental and roadway conditions, as well as motorcyclist age, gender, and helmet usage, were identifie

Fatal motorcycle straddle injury consolidated with traumatic testicular dislocation: A case report.

Straddle injuries are those to the perineum region brought on by straddling or riding over something, such as a horse, vehicle, or other object. The motorcycle fuel tank or handlebars are primarily responsible for the typical injury to the perineum area in motorcycle accidents. Motorcycle straddle injury usually manifest as abrasions to the scrotum or penis, and severe cases can cause pelvic fractures or even testicular dislocation. Because these injuries are usually closed with unclear internal damage, diagnosis presents a significant challenge and can easily lead to misdiagnosis. However, pe
