Esophageal striated muscle contractions in patients with Chagas' disease and idiopathic achalasia.

Chagas' disease causes degeneration and reduction of the number of intrinsic neurons of the esophageal myenteric plexus, with consequent absent or partial lower esophageal sphincter relaxation and loss of peristalsis in the esophageal body. The impairment of esophageal motility is seen mainly in the distal smooth muscle region. There is no study about esophageal striated muscle contractions in the disease. In 81 patients with heartburn (44 with esophagitis) taken as controls, 51 patients with Chagas' disease (21 with esophageal dilatation) and 18 patients with idiopathic achalasia (11 with eso

Two methods for the measurement of voluntary contraction torque in the biceps brachii muscle.

Appropriate measurement of maximal voluntary contraction force of a single limb muscle or of a muscle group is important in clinical and research situations. To measure muscle force, one segment of an isometric measuring brace is fixed to a support and force is applied to the other. The output of this arrangement is affected by additional contributions such as pushing or pulling with the whole body. This paper quantifies the differences between measurements of torque produced by the biceps brachii with the brace fixed versus those produced when the elbow joint was isolated by suspending the br

Neuromuscular propagation after fatiguing contractions of the paralyzed soleus muscle in humans.

We analyzed the M wave and torque after repetitive activation and recovery of the human soleus muscle in individuals with spinal cord injury. Fifteen individuals with complete paralysis had the tibial nerve activated for 330 ms every second with a 20-Hz train. The M wave and torque were analyzed before fatigue, immediately after fatigue, and during recovery. The torque and three M-wave measurements (amplitude, duration, median frequency) changed significantly after fatigue in the chronic group, but the M-wave area was not changed. The M wave was completely recovered after 5 min of rest, even t

Neomycin inhibition of hormone-stimulated smooth muscle contractions in myometrial tissue.

These studies sought to determine the effects of neomycin, a phospholipase C inhibitor, on hormone-stimulated myometrial contractions. For these studies, computer digitalized in vitro isometric contraction data were analyzed for changes in contractile activity in response to oxytocin and aluminum fluoride with and without neomycin. Neomycin (1-5 mM) produced dose-related inhibition of oxytocin and aluminum fluoride-stimulated myometrial contractions. This neomycin effect was apparent within 2-3 minutes of addition and was completely reversible, with resolution of its inhibitory effects within

[Characteristics of contraction force of bovine ciliary muscles caused by cholinergic agent].

We studied the contractions caused by the cholinergic agent carbachol on bovine ciliary muscles. Ciliary muscle strips (width 4 mm x length 6 mm) were prepared in the directions of the longitudinal and circular muscles. Contractions were measured with an isometric tension recorder. The concentration for 50% effective dose was 10(-7) M carbachol, and maximum contraction was obtained at 3 x 10(-6) M. Also, maximum contraction was obtained at a resting tension of 600 mg for the longitudinal direction and 400 mg for the circular direction. At a resting tension of 400 mg and concentration of 10(-5)

Involvement of pedal peptide in locomotion in Aplysia: modulation of foot muscle contractions.

Pedal peptide (Pep) is a 15-amino-acid neuropeptide that is localized within the Aplysia central nervous system (CNS) predominantly to a broad band of neurons in each pedal ganglion. Pep-neurons were identified by intracellular staining and immunocytology or by radioimmunoassay (RIA) of extracts from identified neurons. RIA reveals that 97% of all Pep-like immunoreactivity (IR-Pep) in pedal nerves is found in the three nerves that innervate the foot. Nearly every Pep-neuron sends an axon out at least one of these three nerves. Application of Pep to foot muscle causes an increase in the amplitu

Postural adjustments associated with voluntary contraction of leg muscles in standing man.

The postural adjustments associated with a voluntary contraction of the postural muscles themselves have been studied in the legs of normal standing men. We focussed on the following questions. Do postural adjustments precede the focal movement as in the case of movements of the upper limb? Which muscle(s) are involved in the task of stabilizing posture? Can the same postural muscle be activated in postural stabilization and in voluntary movement at the same time, in spite of the opposite changes in activity possibly required by these conditions? Six subjects standing on a dynamometric platfor

The relaxing effect of SKF 38393 on the catch contraction of Mytilus smooth muscle.

The relaxing effect of SKF 38393 on the catch contraction in the anterior byssus retractor muscle (ABRM) of Mytilus and the effect of SKF 38393 on the cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels in the ABRM were investigated. The catch contraction was relaxed by SKF 38393 in a dose-dependent manner. The dose-response curves of SKF 38393 were shifted in parallel to the right by butaclamol (3 X 10(-6) and 6 X 10(-6) M) and haloperidol (3 X 10(-6) and 3 X 10(-5) M). Their pA2 values were 5.69 +/- 0.05 and 5.80 +/- 0.07. The cAMP levels in the ABRM were not altered by SKF 38393 at a concentration (10(-5) M) sufficie

Endogenous prostaglandins and spontaneous contractions in the circular muscle of the guinea-pig stomach.

The physiological significance of endogenous prostaglandin (PG) on spontaneous contractions in isolated circular muscles of the guinea-pig stomach was investigated. Contents of the E and F types of PG were measured by radioimmunoassay as PGE2 and PGF2 alpha. The isolated circular muscles contained 17.04 +/- 2.12 ng PGE2/g tissue (n = 12) and 9.38 +/- 0.62 ng PGF2 alpha/g tissue (n = 12), and released 0.36 +/- 0.04 ng PGE2/g tissue/min (n = 10) and 0.14 +/- 0.01 ng PGF2 alpha/g tissue/min (n = 12) into the solution. These contents and releases of PGs were reduced by treatment with indomethacin

Influence of pH on the inhibitory action of local anaesthetics on smooth muscle contraction.

1. The guinea-pig isolated ileum kept in a calcium-free depolarizing solution contracts when calcium is added; the responses are proportional to the concentration of calcium and are reversed by washing.2. The contractions elicited by calcium are inhibited by three different classes of compounds: local anaesthetics, pentobarbitone and ethanol. The inhibitory action of the local anaesthetics increases with an increase in pH, the inhibitory action of pentobarbitone increases with a decrease in pH and the inhibitory action of ethanol is not affected by variations in Tyrode pH.3. It is suggested th

Increased muscle tension and reduced elasticity of affected muscles in recent-onset Graves' disease caused primarily by active muscle contraction.

In 3 patients with Graves' disease of recent onset, length-tension diagrams were made during surgery for squint under eyedrop anesthesia. The affected muscles were found to be very stiff when the other eye looked straight ahead. It was expected that these stiff muscles would be able to shorten to some extent but would be unable to lengthen, due to fibrosis of the muscle. We found that the affected muscles did not shorten very much when the other eye looked into the field of action of the muscle. Unexpectedly however, they lengthened considerably when the other eye looked out of the field of ac

Deciphering Muscular Dynamics: A Dual-Attention Framework for Predicting Muscle Contraction From Activation Patterns.

Quantitatively deciphering the relationship between muscle activation and thickness deformation is essential for diagnosing muscle-related diseases and monitoring muscle health (e.g., Facioscapulohumeral Dystrophy). Despite the potential of ultrasound (US) imaging and sensing to measure changes in muscle thickness during movements, it remains challenging to make a fully portable device, considering the wiring and data collection. On the other hand, surface electromyography (sEMG) can record muscle bioelectrical signals and measure muscle activations, offering a unique perspective that correlat

Allatotropic peptides modulate muscle contraction of the female reproductive system in Rhodnius prolixus (STÄL).

Allatotropin (AT) acts as a myoregulator at the level of the dorsal vessel (DV) and midgut (MG) in triatominae insects. Previous analyses of the expression of the AT receptor in Rhodnius prolixus showed that AT is expressed in the DV and MG, but also in the reproductive system in females. To further study the activity of AT on female reproductive organs we analyzed the response by adult females in different physiological conditions, including unfed (virgin and mated), and fed mated females (gravid), to doses ranging between 10-14 and 10-6M. Myoregulatory activity was evaluated in vivo, by reco

Muscle co-contraction and co-activation in cerebral palsy during gait: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) results from an injury to a developing brain. Muscle activation patterns during walking are disrupted in individuals with CP. Indeed, excessive muscle co-contraction or co-activation (MCo/MCa) is one of the characteristics of pathological gait. Although some researchers have studied MCo/MCa in individuals with CP during gait, inconsistent results limit our understanding of this literature. Increased knowledge of MCo/MCa patterns in individuals with CP may help the development of improved gait management approaches. RESEARCH QUESTION: This review aims to summari

Lack of skeletal muscle contraction disrupts fibrous tissue morphogenesis in the developing murine knee.

Externally applied forces, such as those generated through skeletal muscle contraction, are important to embryonic joint formation, and their loss can result in gross morphologic defects including joint fusion. While the absence of muscle contraction in the developing chick embryo leads to dissociation of dense connective tissue structures of the knee and ultimately joint fusion, the central knee joint cavitates whereas the patellofemoral joint does not in murine models lacking skeletal muscle contraction, suggesting a milder phenotype. These differential results suggest that muscle contractio

Muscle Contraction Has a Reduced Effect on Increasing Glenohumeral Stability in the Apprehension Position.

PURPOSE: Glenohumeral instability accounts for 23% of all shoulder injuries among collegiate athletes. The apprehension position-combined shoulder abduction and external rotation-commonly reproduces symptoms in athletes with instability. Rehabilitation aims to increase glenohumeral stability by strengthening functional positions. However, it is unclear how much glenohumeral stability increases with muscle contraction in the apprehension position. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ability to increase translational glenohumeral stiffness, a quantitative measure of glenohumer
