[Objective tympanophonia caused by myoclonus of the auricular muscles].

The objective of the present literature review was to systematize the available data on the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnostics, and treatment of muscular tympanophonia. The commonest source of muscular tympanophonia is the tremor (myoclonus) of the soft palate or the middle ear; sometimes this condition can be a consequence of myoclonus of the external ear muscles or head muscles. Pharmacotherapy of muscular tympanophonia does not invariably result in the favourable outcome. The author describes a rare observation of objective tympanophonia attributable to myoclonus of the

Proteasomal activity-based probes mark protein homeostasis in muscles.

BACKGROUND: Protein homeostasis, primarily regulated by the ubiquitin-proteasome system is crucial for proper function of cells. In tissues of post-mitotic cells, the impaired ubiquitin-proteasome system is found in a wide range of neuromuscular disorders. Activity-based probes (ABPs) measure proteasomal proteolytic subunits and can be used to report protein homeostasis. Despite the crucial role of the proteasome in neuromuscular pathologies, ABPs were not employed in muscle cells and tissues, and measurement of proteasomal activity was carried out in vitro using low-throughput procedures. Injuries of the obturator muscles in professional soccer players.

PURPOSE: Obturator externus and internus muscular tears are uncommon injuries. Only a few case reports exist, mainly in high-level athletes. Our aim is to describe a series of obturator externus and internus muscular tears in professional soccer players. METHODS: Injury data from four teams from the First Division of the Spanish Soccer League were collected over a total of four seasons. Any soccer player who sustained an injury to either the obturator externus or internus identified on magnetic resonance (MRI) was included. All injured players were treated non-operatively with a goal of retur

Denervation pseudohypertrophy of calf muscles associated with diabetic neuropathy.

Denervation of muscle usually leads to muscle atrophy with fatty replacement but, uncommonly, also results in muscle hypertrophy or pseudohypertrophy with fatty replacement. We report the ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of a patient with diffuse fatty infiltration of calf muscles as a result of denervation pseudohypertrophy. The elevated fasting glucose, neurogenic electromyographic changes, and muscle atrophy with adipose tissue infiltration are consistent with diabetic neuropathy as the cause of denervation pseudohypertrophy. Lumbosacral radiculopathy and plexo

Muscle spindles in the human bulbospongiosus and ischiocavernosus muscles.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle spindles are crucial for neuronal regulation of striated muscles, but their presence and involvement in the superficial perineal muscles is not known. METHODS: Bulbospongiosus and ischiocavernosus muscle specimens were obtained from 31 human cadavers. Serial sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Sirius red, antibodies against Podocalyxin, myosin heavy chain isoforms (MyHC-slow tonic, S46; MyHC-2a/2x, A4.74), and neurofilament for the purpose of muscle spindle screening, counting, and characterization. RESULTS: A low but consistent number of spindles were dete

Palatopharyngeus the missing palatal muscles: Anatomical and physiological review.

The first true anatomical descriptions of the normal anatomy of the palate and pharynx were published by Von Luschka in 1868, and then in 1935 anatomist James Whillis described pharyngeal sphincter. Later, in 1941 Michael Oldfield noted that the muscular elements of the soft palate have a sling-like function. Although there have been conflicting descriptions of the role of the palatopharyngeus, multiple function such as speech, swallowing, and respiration, it could role in all this function. Although, the palatopharyngeus muscle has many important functions, but it remains the missing muscle t

Pax7-Positive Cells/Satellite Cells in Human Extraocular Muscles.

PURPOSE: We quantified and investigated the distribution of Pax7-positive cells/satellite cells (SCs) in the human extraocular muscles (EOMs). METHODS: An immunofluorescence multiple-marker method simultaneously combining two SC markers (Pax7, NCAM), detection of the basement membrane (laminin) and cell nuclei (4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole [DAPI]), was used on the anterior, middle, and posterior portions of EOMs from five healthy donors. Pax7-positive cell and SC content, myonuclear content, myofiber cross-sectional area, and myonuclear domain were analyzed in single cross-sections. Between

Imaging anatomy and pathology of extraocular muscles in adults.

The extraocular muscles (EOM) are involved in a variety of disease processes with characteristic findings on imaging. EOM anatomy is described, followed by a review of adult EOM pathology. The imaging characteristics are explained with examples. The pattern of EOM disease on imaging, in corroboration with clinical findings, can often lead the radiologist towards a specific diagnosis.

Isometric evaluation of rotator cuff muscles in volleyball athletes.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate, in a group of semi-professional volleyball players, the function of the rotator cuff muscles with a new specific device. METHODS: We have studied 30 asymptomatic volleyball players, 15 females and 15 males, all right handed central or lateral spikers, with some specific functional tests. Every subject was evaluated by some common clinical tests to detect shoulder range of motion (ROM) and rotator cuff muscles strength in both sides. Athletes were also submitted to an isometric bilateral shoulder strength test, with a specific upper limb dynam

Restoration of pinch in intrinsic muscles of the hand.

The primary intrinsic muscles responsible for key and tip pinch are the adductor pollicis, first dorsal interosseous and flexor pollicis brevis muscles. Numerous conditions can lead to their dysfunction. Non-operative treatment consists of exercises of the compensating extensor pollicis longus and flexor pollicis longus muscles and use of adaptive devices, such as larger grips. Operative treatments include tendon transfers and joint fusions. The most common tendon transfer procedures include transfering of the extensor carpi radialis brevis to the adductor pollicis muscle or transfering of the

Turns-amplitude analysis in normal and myopathic facial muscles.

The purpose of this study was to assess turns/amplitude analysis (TAA) as an objective alternative to conventional qualitative electromyography (EMG) for detection of myopathy in facial muscles. Normal values of TAA parameters were calculated in the frontalis and mentalis muscles of 26 control subjects. We estimated the slope of the regression line of mean amplitude/turn values (MA) plotted against the number of turns/second (NT) and the resulting clouds. The 95% confidence limits of the cloud data were drawn as an ellipse. The sensitivity of TAA was determined from a group of 35 myopathic pat

Voluntary breathing influences corticospinal excitability of nonrespiratory finger muscles.

The present study aimed to investigate neurophysiologic mechanisms mediating the newly discovered phenomenon of respiratory-motor interactions and to explore its potential clinical application for motor recovery. First, young and healthy subjects were instructed to breathe normally (NORM); to exhale (OUT) or inhale (IN) as fast as possible in a self-paced manner; or to voluntarily hold breath (HOLD). In experiment 1 (n = 14), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied during 10% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) finger flexion force production or at rest. The motor-evoked potentials

Leg muscles activities during hyperventilation following a cycling exercise.

The goal of this study was to establish how increased ventilation modifies postural stability, as characterized by body sway and leg muscle activities. Twelve healthy subjects had to perform six 30-second postural tests: one pre-exercise test while breathing gently and then one test every minute for the five minutes immediately following a maximum-intensity, incremental cycling exercise test. Subjects were asked to maintain an upright stance on a force plate for 30 s, with their eyes open. Movement of the centre of pressure in the sagittal plane was monitored in the time and spectral domains.

Contribution of occlusal activity to synaptogenesis in masticatory muscles.

Synaptogenesis in the neuromuscular junction involves a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) switch and elimination. The microphthalmic mouse (mi/mi) with a mutation in the mitf gene cannot perform occlusal activity, because its teeth do not erupt. The present study attempted to elucidate the contribution of occlusal activity to synaptogenesis in masticatory muscles. In the masseter of the mi/mi, the nAChR elimination initiated, but did not progress normally, after 3 weeks of age, when the occlusal activity emerged in the +/+ mouse, whereas the nAChR switch progressed normally during the e

Artificial muscles to restore transport function of diseased atria.

Surgical treatment of persistent atrial fibrillation often fails to restore the transport function of the atrium. This study first introduces the concept of an atrial assist device to restore the pump function of the atrium. A micro motorless pump based on artificial muscle technology, is positioned on the external surface of the atrium to compress it and restore its muscular activity. A bench model reproduces the function of fibrillating atrium to assess the circulatory support that this pump can provide. The Atripump is a dome shape silicone coated nitinol actuator mounted on a plastic ring.

Postural and respiratory functions of the pelvic floor muscles.

AIMS: Due to their contribution to modulation of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) and stiffness of the sacroiliac joints, the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) have been argued to provide a contribution to control of the lumbar spine and pelvis. Furthermore, as IAP is modulated during respiration this is likely to be accompanied by changes in PFM activity. METHODS: In order to evaluate the postural and respiratory function of the PFM, recordings of anal and vaginal electromyographic activity (EMG) were made with surface electrodes during single and repetitive arm movements that challenge the stability

Denervation pattern of three mimic muscles in Bell's palsy.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the presence and grade of denervation in three mimic muscles in facial nerve palsy. METHODS: The frontalis, orbicularis oculi (OO), and mentalis muscles were explored in 54 patients with Bell's palsy, after 30 days from the beginning of symptoms. Concentric needle electromyography, including fibrillation detection, was performed in the three muscles on the affected side. Compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) were recorded on both sides and a CMAP ratio was calculated from each muscle. The House-Brackman scale was used to assess the initial clinical evaluation and the
