Factors associated with deaf-mutism in children attending special schools of rural central India: A survey.

BACKGROUND: Effects of hearing loss on the development of a child's ability to learn, to communicate, and to socialize can be devastating. If no auditory rehabilitation is done by peri-lingual period, the child develops permanent speech problems. The cases included in this category will be those having hearing loss more than 90 dB in the better ear or total loss of hearing in both the ears. Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA)/Auditory Brainstem response (ABR) has been established as the most reliable screening tool for hearing assessment in neonates. OBJECTIVES: To perform a questionn

Treatment of selective mutism based on cognitive behavioural therapy, psychopharmacology and combination therapy - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Selective mutism (SM) is a debilitating childhood anxiety disorder characterized by a persistent lack of speech in certain social settings and is considered hard to treat. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacological treatments are the best described treatments in the literature. AIM: To test whether there is evidence on treatment based on CBT, medication or a combination of these. METHODS: Systematic and critical review of the literature on CBT and/or pharmacological treatments of SM. Literature was sought on PubMed, Embase and Psycinfo in March 2017. RESULTS: Of the

Playing with Gladys: A case study integrating drama therapy with behavioural interventions for the treatment of selective mutism.

This case study examines an integrative approach combining drama therapy and the behavioural skill "shaping", as offered to Gladys, a 5-year-old girl diagnosed with selective mutism. This study found that shaping, when implemented in the context of play, with play as the primary reinforcer, elicited from Gladys vocalization and eventually speech within a very short time. Her vocalizations allowed her to enter dramatic play, which in turn propelled spontaneous speech. This article looks at how the three elements of dramatherapy - the playspace, role-playing and dramatic projection - brought abo

Is selective mutism associated with deficits in memory span and visual memory?: An exploratory case-control study.

Our main aim in this study was to explore the association between selective mutism (SM) and aspects of nonverbal cognition such as visual memory span and visual memory. Auditory-verbal memory span was also examined. The etiology of SM is unclear, and it probably represents a heterogeneous condition. SM is associated with language impairment, but nonspecific neurodevelopmental factors, including motor problems, are also reported in SM without language impairment. Furthermore, SM is described in Asperger's syndrome. Studies on nonverbal cognition in SM thus merit further investigation. Neuropsyc

Elective mutism: effect of dental treatment with N2/O2-inhalation sedation: review and report of case.

Elective mutism in children is characterized by a marked, emotionally determined selectivity in speaking, such that the child demonstrates his or her language competence in some situations but fails to speak in other situations. An eight-year-old boy with elective mutism had to undergo restorative dental treatment. It was chosen to use relative analgesia to perform this treatment. The sedation with oxygen and nitrous oxide resulted in complete symptom remission as long as the sedation lasted.

Acute pseudobulbar mutism due to discrete bilateral capsular infarction in the territory of the anterior choroidal artery.

Pseudobulbar mutism is rarely attributed to bilateral discrete posterior limb internal capsule-medial globus pallidus infarction. Few cases of bilateral anterior choroidal (AchA) artery territory infarction have been reported. We present 8 patients with ischaemic stroke in this location and vascular distribution who have a characterizable syndrome. All had the abrupt onset of inability to speak, swallow or phonate, accompanied by varying degrees of facial diplegia, hemiparesis, hemisensory loss, lethargy, neglect and change in affect. The appearance of clinical signs depends upon the presence

Abnormal neutrophil chemotaxis in a syndrome of unusual facies, proportionate small stature and sensorineural deafness-mutism.

Two of 5 children in one family presented with unique facies, proportionate small stature and sensorineural deafness-mutism. One of the children who had a history of recurrent infections, was shown to have a defect of leukocyte chemotaxis. Although impairment of chemotaxis could not be demonstrated in the other affected sibling, it is unlikely that the association of a previously undescribed syndrome and a rare disorder of chemotaxis is a chance occurrence.

Fully-Automated Identification of Imaging Biomarkers for Post-Operative Cerebellar Mutism Syndrome Using Longitudinal Paediatric MRI.

Post-operative cerebellar mutism syndrome (POPCMS) in children is a post- surgical complication which occurs following the resection of tumors within the brain stem and cerebellum. High resolution brain magnetic resonance (MR) images acquired at multiple time points across a patient's treatment allow the quantification of localized changes caused by the progression of this syndrome. However, MR images are not necessarily acquired at regular intervals throughout treatment and are often not volumetric. This restricts the analysis to 2D space and causes difficulty in intra- and inter-subject comp

Adaptive, behavioral, and emotional outcomes following postoperative pediatric cerebellar mutism syndrome in survivors treated for medulloblastoma.

OBJECTIVE: Patients who experience postoperative pediatric cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) during treatment for medulloblastoma have long-term deficits in neurocognitive functioning; however, the consequences on functional or adaptive outcomes are unknown. The purpose of the present study was to compare adaptive, behavioral, and emotional functioning between survivors with and those without a history of CMS. METHODS: The authors examined outcomes in 45 survivors (15 with CMS and 30 without CMS). Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, which included parent-report measures of adaptive,

Cerebellar Mutism Syndrome and Dentato-Thalamo-Cortical Tract Disruption in Diffusion Tractography Following Surgery for Medulloblastoma.

Background Cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS), a complication following medulloblastoma surgery, has been linked to dentato-thalamo-cortical tract (DTCT) injury; the association of the degree of DTCT injury with severity of CMS-related symptoms has not been investigated. Purpose To investigate the association between severity of CMS-related symptoms and degree and patterns of DTCT injury with use of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and if laterality of injury influences neurologic symptoms. Materials and Methods This retrospective case-control study used prospectively collected clinical and DTI d

Intermittent Akinetic Mutism after Bilateral Paramedian Thalamic Infarction Caused by Artery of Percheron Occlusion:A Case Report.

Intermittent clinical course of akinetic mutism is very unusual. We describe a 74-year-old man who started to demonstrate episodes of altered mental state with stopped moving and talking, poor response to commands, and muscle stiffness in both upper limbs approximately 1.5 months after cardioembolic bilateral paramedian thalamic infarction. Their frequency gradually increased and poststroke nonconvulsive status epilepticus was suspected, but prolonged video-electroencephalography monitoring did not reveal any epileptiform abnormalities. The patient had no significant metabolic or infectious di

Presurgical MRI-Based Radiomics Models for Predicting Cerebellar Mutism Syndrome in Children With Posterior Fossa Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Current studies have indicated that tumoral morphologic features are associated with cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS), but the radiomics application in CMS is scarce. PURPOSE: To develop a model for CMS discrimination based on multiparametric MRI radiomics in patients with posterior fossa tumors. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: A total of 218 patients (males 132, females 86) with posterior fossa tumors, 169 of which were included in the MRI radiomics analysis. The MRI radiomics study cohort (169) was split into training (119) and testing (50) sets with a ratio of 7:3. FI

Association between cerebral perfusion and paediatric postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome after posterior fossa surgery-a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome (ppCMS) is a common complication following the resection of a cerebellar tumour in children. It is hypothesized that loss of integrity of the cerebellar output tracts results in a cerebello-cerebral "diaschisis" and reduced function of supratentorial areas of the brain. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the literature according to the PRISMA guidelines, in order to evaluate the evidence for hypoperfusion or hypofunction in the cerebral hemispheres in patients with ppCMS. Articles were selected based on the predefined e

Perioperative risk factors for long-term intelligence in children with postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome after medulloblastoma surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Approximately 7%-50% of children with medulloblastoma (MB) develop postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome (pCMS). pCMS has a short-term negative impact on intelligence, but effects on long-term outcomes are contradictory. The aim of this study was to assess long-term effects of pCMS in MB patients on aspects of intelligence quotient (IQ) and its perioperative risk factors. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective cohort study, 31 children were included (14 pCMS). Perioperative risk factors included brainstem invasion, vermis incision, hydrocephalus, tumor size, severity of pC

Rapid Response of Long-Standing, Treatment-Resistant Non-Catatonic Mutism in Paranoid Schizophrenia with Single ECT session.

CONTEXT: Mutism is a common manifestation of catatonia, but mutism due to other forms of psychopathology and neurological disorders have also been described. Although not common, long-standing mutism has also been a feature of non-catatonic schizophrenia and traditionally responds less to conventional therapies. CASE REPORT: We describe a rare case of paranoid schizophrenia presenting with continuous mutism for about 4 years. This 26-year-old male had symptoms of schizophrenia without catatonia. After failed trial of adequate pharmacotherapy and psychological intervention and considering his
