Seafood consumption is a major route for human exposure to environmental contaminants of emerging concern (CeCs). However, toxicological information about the presence of CeCs in seafood is still insufficient, especially considering the effect of cooking procedures on contaminant levels. This study is one among a few who evaluated the effect of steaming on the levels of different CeCs (toxic elements, PFCs, PAHs, musk fragrances and UV-filters) in commercially relevant seafood in Europe, and estimate the potential risks associated with its consumption for consumers. In most cases, an increase

It has been almost a decade since a previously unknown human toxic syndrome, azaspiracid poisoning (AZP), emerged as the cause of severe gastrointestinal illness in humans after the consumption of mussels (Mytilus edulis). Structural studies indicated that these toxins, azaspiracids, were of a new unprecedented class containing novel structural features. It is now known that the prevalent azaspiracids in mussels are AZA1, AZA2 and AZA3, which differ from each other in their degree of methylation. Several hydroxylated and carboxylated analogues of the main azaspiracids have also been identified

Despite the known contribution of industrially derived natural radioactivity, also known as Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), to animal and human radiation dose via seafood consumption, its ecotoxicological effects on marine organisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the physiological responses of bivalve molluscs to enhanced natural radioactivity have not been studied under controlled conditions. We conducted laboratory exposure experiments on three edible bivalve species, Cresstoderma edule, Mytilus edulis and Magallana gigas, selected for their ecological relevance an

Ocean acidification (OA) is expected to indirectly impact biota living in contaminated coastal environments by altering the bioavailability and potentially toxicity of many pH-sensitive metals. Here, we show that OA (pH 7.71; pCO2 1480 μatm) significantly increases the toxicity responses to a global coastal contaminant (copper ~0.1 μM) in two keystone benthic species; mussels (Mytilus edulis) and purple sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus). Mussels showed an extracellular acidosis in response to OA and copper individually which was enhanced during combined exposure. In contrast, urchins maintai

The influence of the biometric parameters (shell mass, whole soft tissue mass, condition index) on MT and metal levels in the heat-treated cytosol of the whole soft tissue of transplanted mussels was studied over the period of one year. The positive correlation of three metals (Cd, Fe, Zn) with the shell mass indicated to time-dependent increase of their contents. Strong correlation of Mn content with the whole soft tissue mass (r = 0.74, p < 0.0001), and almost identical changes of these two parameters over the year make Mn a good indicator of mussel's condition. As opposed to the other metal

San Francisco Bay (SFB) is a eutrophic estuary that harbors both freshwater and marine toxigenic organisms that are responsible for harmful algal blooms. While there are few commercial fishery harvests within SFB, recreational and subsistence harvesting for shellfish is common. Coastal shellfish are monitored for domoic acid and paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), but within SFB there is no routine monitoring for either toxin. Dinophysis shellfish toxins (DSTs) and freshwater microcystins are also present within SFB, but not routinely monitored. Acute exposure to any of these toxin groups has s

This paper describes a new method for sensitive, specific and direct determination of domoic acid (DA), the causative toxin of amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) syndrome, in shellfish. It is based on combination of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (HILIC/MS). The high percentage of organic modifier in the mobile phase and the omission of ion-pairing reagents, both favoured in HILIC, result in enhanced detection limits with MS detection. The new method was set up either on an ionspray ion trap MS instrument operating in MS and MS/MS scanning acquisition modes

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are renowned for being among the most extreme environments on Earth. However, the mussel shells found in these vent sites demonstrate remarkable productivity, despite being subjected to high pressure as well as unusual levels of heavy metals, pH, temperature, CO2, and sulphides. To comprehend how these mussels endure such extreme conditions, a systematic comparative study was conducted, focusing on the unique chemical composition, structural designs, and mechanical properties of hydrothermal vent mussels (Bathymodiolus aduloides) in comparison to shallow-water musse

In the 2010s, a novel lectin family with β-trefoil folding has been identified in marine mussels from the family Mytilidae (phylum Mollusca). "MytiLec-1," the lectin described in this chapter, was the first member of this family to be isolated and characterized from the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, a commercially and ecologically important species, spread in marine coastal areas worldwide. MytiLec-1 bound to the sugar moiety of globotriose (Gb3: Galα1-4Galβ1-4Glc), an α-galactoside, leading to apoptosis of Gb3-expressing Burkitt's lymphoma cells. Although the primary structu

Fish industry by-products constitute an interesting platform for the extraction and recovery of valuable compounds in a circular economy approach. Among them, mussel shells could provide a calcium-rich source for the synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HA) bioceramics. In this work, HA nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized starting from mussel shells (Mytilus edulis) with a two steps process based on thermal treatment to convert CaCO3 in CaO and subsequent wet precipitation with a phosphorus source. Several parameters were studied, such as the temperature and gaseous atmosphere of the ther

A fast, simple and robust method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of 23 pharmaceuticals (including some major metabolites) in bivalve mollusks. The analytes belong to eight different therapeutic groups: antibiotics, psychiatric drugs, analgesics/anti-inflammatories, tranquilizer, calcium channel blockers, diuretic, and prostatic hyperplasia. The method is based on pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) followed by solid phase extraction clean-up (SPE), and ultra performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPL-MS/MS) for the identification and quant

A series of botulism challenge studies were conducted to determine if botulinum toxin would be produced in mussels (Mytilus edulis) inoculated with non-proteolytic Clostridium botulinum spores and held under modified atmosphere (MA) packaging conditions at normal (4 °C) and abusive (12 °C) temperatures. Spore mixtures of six strains of non-proteolytic C. botulinum were introduced into live mussels through immersion in a seawater solution with cultured algae. Mussels were packed in a commercial high-oxygen (60-65% O2) MA-package with a buffer, and also packed under a vacuum. Feeding live mussel

In the period 1999-2003 a monitoring study on the accumulation of organotin compounds in edible organisms in the Lagoon of Venice was conducted. Butyl and Phenyl derivatives were determined in pooled samples of Mytilus galloprovincialis and Tapes spp. with the aims of assessing organotin contamination in the Lagoon of Venice in the period just preceding their ban in Europe, monitoring the concentrations in organisms with a high commercial use, evaluating a potential hazard for human health due to seafood and identifying the possible contamination sources. Sampling stations (up to 20) were dist

Quantitative tissue-level biomarkers are important for assessing pollutant-induced biological effects, yet conventional histopathology remains largely manual, low-throughput, and observer-dependent. We developed a deep learning-based histopathradiomics workflow for high-throughput morphometric quantification in the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) was used as a benchmark stressor to provide a biologically defined tissue-injury context for workflow evaluation. An optimized Res-UNet achieved Dice coefficients of 0.9159 ± 0.0788 for gill epithelium and 0.8687 ± 0.1612

This study investigated dispersion and bioaccumulation of mining-related elements from an open-pit olivine mine at Seqi in Southwest Greenland (64° N) using lichens (Flavocetraria nivalis), seaweeds (Fucus vesiculosus), mussels (Mytilus edulis) and fish (Myoxocephalus scorpius). The mine operated between 2005 and 2009, and samples were taken every year within a monitoring area 0-17 km from the mine during the period 2004-2011. A total of 46 elements were analysed in the samples. After mining began, highly elevated metal concentrations, especially nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe) and cobal

The removal of the protozoan parasite, Cryptosporidium parvum, from wastewaters is becoming of increasing importance in the UK, especially since contamination of raw waters by sewage effluents has been implicated in major waterborne outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis in recent years. Compared to conventional wastewater-treatment processes, constructed wetlands have demonstrated favourable removal rates for Cryptosporidium oocysts. The removal mechanisms, however, remain unknown. Predation by free-living ciliated protozoa, which are commonly found in constructed wetlands, was investigated as a poss

Blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), pouting (Trisopterus luscus) and common dab (Limanda limanda) are underutilized fish species attractive in terms of sustainability. However, there is limited information about their nutritional characteristics as well as potential presence of environmental contaminants. Specimens caught in European waters were characterised for their content of essential and toxic elements. The three species, along with common carp and blue mussels, relevant for sustainable production too, were employed as raw materials for the development of semi-industrial ready-to-ea

Emerging contaminants, such as antibiotics, antidepressants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics, hormones, pesticides, and microplastics, pose a growing threat to aquatic ecosystems, primarily affecting macroinvertebrates, which are crucial as bioindicators of water quality. This study aims to evaluate the effects of these contaminants on the physiological and bioindicator responses of macroinvertebrates through a systematic review following the PRISMA methodology and a principal component analysis of standardised, categorised data to identify patterns in sublethal effects.
